    Published: March 18, 2015
    Rating: Rated T
    Writer: Mark Waid
    Penciller: Terry Dodson
When Princess Leia Organa was captured by the Empire as a Rebel spy, she never betrayed her convictions, even in the face of the complete destruction of her home world, Alderaan. When her rescue came, she grabbed a blaster and joined the fight, escaping back to the Rebel Alliance and helping strike the biggest blow against the Empire—the destruction of the Death Star. But in the aftermath of that victory, the question remains...what is a princess without a world? Writer Mark Waid (Daredevil, S.H.I.E.L.D.) and artist Terry Dodson (Avengers & X-Men: Axis, Uncanny X-Men) bring us a story of Leia’s quest to help her people and find her place in the galaxy.

Preview is up at Comic Book Resources.

I haven't read #1, but it's cool seeing flashbacks to Bail. He gets a really great line in here:

YOUNG LEIA: "Doesn't a princess get to think of herself?"
    BAIL: "Sometimes. Of others? Always."

This comic is really turning out to be a positive surprise, because it seems to actually be doing something new unlike Vader and the main SW run.

I'm sure you guys have talked about this to death in the thread for Issue 1, but is the first time we've ever really seen Leia grieving over Alderaan, at least in its immediate aftermath? I feel like LelalMekha may have mentioned that she did so here, but I'm not sure.

    Edit: Also, cover.

And the other one. You guys didn't think there wouldn't be a variant, did you?

It happens here and there in old EU, though usually I can only recall it coming through with her extreme hatred of the Empire.

Yeah, well, given the sheer size of the EU is hard to find something Leia hasn't done. Leia talking about roasted peppers while riding a baby bantha? I'm sure there's some AJ short tale or some old Galaxy Magazine adventure seed showing her doing exactly that.

The point is that now it's something that is taking a preeminent place. It's the first think she does right after Yavin.

However people might feel about it, Star Wood did deal with that a good bit.

Didn’t it only amount to about two scenes? Mind you my memory of that series is really foggy.

Well debatably, the whole plot where she went to the ruins and met that dude was about that. No one's gonna write a whole arc of her just weeping--the goal is to show her dealing with it somehow.

Star Wood had part of an arc about it, yes. It feels like it's being done better here, though.

Leia's grieving over Alderaan was indeed featured in Star Wars Journal: Captive to Evil.

Usually, I tend to regard long flashbacks as a narrative flaw; but if it allows us to see Alderaan in its glory, then I'm all for it!

Finished reading Leia #2 and it seems my fear of the writers OP 'ing Leia in a physical sense has come true......

She beats up a freaking Bessilsk with hardly any effort

The old Marvel series also got around to addressing Leia's grief, but not until issue 53 (unless there's an earlier issue I'm forgetting). There's a scene in that one where Leia is looking at two video displays; one is labeled "Alderaan Pre-Holocaust" and has a planet on the screen; the other is labeled "Alderaan Today" and it's just an empty screen with no planet.

Is the 'Untitled' in the thread title necessary? I mean, the name of the series is 'Princess Leia'. That's it. That's the title. There are no arc titles, because this is a miniseries. The name of the series is the name of the arc. #pedantry
