Originally there were supposed to be 9. Unfortunately, George Lucas will only be making 6. By the time he finishes Episode III he'll be too old to do another trilogy.

Well. There are currently six movies:
    A New Hope
    Empire Strikes Back
    Return of the Jedi

    Ewoks: Caravan of Courage
    Ewoks: Battle for Endor

    The Phantom Menace

There are currently two more movies in production:
    Attack of the Clones
    (Episode III)

So, after Episode III is released, there will be eight Star Wars movies.

    6. Originally the plans called for 9, but GL, aside from wanting to do other things than SW in his life, also realized that his story had ended with RotJ; he had nothing else he wanted to tell.

Don't forget the droids and ewoks cartoons, and the Unforgettable Holiday Special(Though people try, ;).)

Lucas has had some involvement in all 3 of those stories. Then there was star tours which lucas wrote the story, ilm filmed and lucas even played a bit part in.

    "muha ha ha uh!"
    "Grarrrrrrrrrrrw!"
    "Graw gr muh muk ma!"

After watching it, Im sure I knew what they were saying :)

Then recently we found out on the TPM DVD, that lucas is involved with the scripts of every star wars games(to make sure they mesh with his universe), and that he even plays the games in his spare time.

Of the cartoons, only "The Great Heep" can be considered a "movie" - so I suppose the movie count is back up to 9.

They actually released the cartoons in videos a couple years ago as long 3 hr movies.

Even then a cartoon is a minature film.

The definition of movie is moving/motion picture, is series of pictures shown in a continuous speed in that it seems to move. So any pictures that moves can be counted as a movie.
