God, that image sends chills down my spine. Was there ever a franchise-salvager like Casino Royale? The opening sequence alone managed to render the Brosnan era a mere bad dream.

The closest I can think of is Batman Begins

    DebonaireNerd: I wrote "franchise-salvager". Not "cynical franchise-excavation".

And, in that image, I have the watch he's wearing.

But you include the prequels in the list. Films so arse-bendingly bad that there's no way a person could seriously support them in any capacity. Even nostalgia has its limits, as we'll see when the next Spielberg film comes out.

The sad thing about the Brosnan era was that there were a lot of good ideas in his last three films that had the potential to lead to some interesting stories, but the filmmakers just decided to play it safe and give us dumb, generic action films instead. I still kind of enjoy them as just that, dumb action films, but it's really a waste.

TWINE is underrated, mostly because people prefer to sledge Christmas Jones/Denise Richards rather than focus on anything else.

The whole Bond/Elektra relationship is fantastic and Brosnan's probably at his peak in the role here.

Well that plus the ****ty script and the fact that Michael Apted couldn't competently stage an action scene if his life depended on it.

Was the script actually that bad though?

Eh, I really liked TWINE -- I think it makes it into the top-third of Bond films I think (I'd have to count) -- and I don't hold the, by then, standard terrible ending joke. Even FYEO had possibly one of the worst endings, for a pretty great film prior to that.

Also, I loooooove the Garbage track...

Bond for me has been good.. Only started watching from Pierce onwards but Daniels role is gonna take some big replacing in the future after his wraps up his final films.

So the entire film is going to be judged on an ending that makes bad puns about a dumb character's name?

Look at the plot. The twist away from Renard to Elektra. Bond being manipulated by her. Bond being furious at her games. M being at risk. All of that?

At best it's something that could have been interesting if the execution wasn't garbage.

There was a guy in that film who had a bullet which had been traveling through his head for months at glacial speeds. It was a dumb movie, Ender.

You're right, because before the continuity reboot the exact same character had been to space with the US Space Marines coming to assist him take down the villain. But the guy with the metal teeth defected in that, too, so a character impervious to pain thanks to an injury was atyical and a nadir creatively.

It's okay because the whole franchise is full of stupid ideas?

No, Wocky, the franchise has a history of fantastical ideas which are not unique to this picture and despite sensible resets like LTK, OHMSS and CR/QoS, they keep creeping back in.

    I mean,
Dr No had metal hands that were functional.
Oddjob was completely impervious to physical attack.
Mr Big was inflated like a balloon and exploded.
    Jaws.
Mayday and Zorin were genetic clone experiements.

You see? Not like villainous foibles just appeared for this film.

That's what I mean. You've got all that great stuff in there, but the filmmakers never really explore them properly because they are too scared to divert from the standard Bond formula.
The title song is fantastic though.

TWINE has a lot in common with Skyfall , particularly the M story and someone coming after her for revenge . Trouble is it does drag in places and the end is a damp squib .

Not to mention MI6 HQ being attacked, and a forced strategic withdrawal pending repairs/rebuilding.

Danny Boyle starts another project, may clash with Bond 25

I'm not really invested one way or the other on him or some of the other potential candidates directing the next movie. But since he'd apparently only do it if his preferred writer did the screenplay, and if he doesn't do it then they'd go back to a screenplay by Purvis and Wade instead, this news could impact what the story of Bond 25 ends up being. We're still at the point where the only things known for sure are that Craig is still in and that they're targeting a release in November 2019 (which could also shift based on directors and such).

I'd love the next film to have Bond wake from a coma in a hospital, and learn SPECTRE was all just a dream.
