If you want a good spy movie with Pierce, check out The Tailor of Panama if you haven't. It's by John friggin' Boorman.

I love the two trajectories that Dalton and Brosnan followed post-Bond: the former exuded a lighter, breezy charisma(The Rocketeer, Hot Fuzz) while the latter exhibited a misanthropic darkness (The Matador, The Tailor of Panama, The Ghost Writer) I didn't know he possessed.

I've seen Tailor of Panama. I really can't call Rocketeer a post-Bond film for Dalton because he was still scheduled to make another the year after that. He's had a bit of a varied career.
Brosnan's films weren't the best of the series, but they were popular with the public and did alright with critics. I mean 6 years had passed since the previous Bond movie. People were questioning whether the character could even come back . Each actor can only be who he is , and Brosnan naturally fits between Connery and Moore. Die Another Day made as much as the first two Craig films. But Casino Royale came about for a variety of reasons. 9/11 and the harsh realism of real life terror, the first Bourne movie, and the recently acquistion of the rights to Casino Royale. Originally they expressed bringing Brosnan back (his contract was up after 4), but they wanted to do that movie and after a year he was 50. Casino Royale the novel was not an origin for the character, nor was it his first mission, but that's the direction they went so they needed a younger actor naturally. It also showed how much better the movies were with a real Fleming novel to work from.

As far as post-Bond Brosnan films go, AVOID November Man - terrible film. Possibly the worst...aside from Mamma Mia...of his post-007 films.

Jedi Rising is correct to note that going to Fleming is your key. Which is why a black Bond or bisexual Bond or gay Bond is not on the table.

Tailor of Panama I love. It's great because it's a) Le Carre, and b) Brosnan trying to show the world what he could do with Bond.

Mamma Mia! is awesome, you shut up. He can't sing, of course, but he gives it his all. Doesn't make the movie unfun...

I really liked Brosnan in Butterfly On A Wheel. Thomas Crown was very good too.

I still maintain the "Reverse Heist" sequence in The Thomas Crown Affair is my favorite heist scene of all time.

problem is there aren't any Fleming novels left. i liked CR alright, but since then they've gone way too much into 'what makes Bond , Bond' . This is a character from a time when men took there knicks in life and got on with it.

yeah i liked The Thomas Crown Affair too. plus it was actually aimed at a grown up audience.

people are always saying that Bond needs to get back to how he is in the novels , but - I've read some of the novels , 4 or 5 , and I'd have to say that I never got much in the way of characterization from them , Bond seemed rather a 'blank' to me , I thought Fleming did this intentionally so that the reader could project onto the character what they wanted to a large degree .

but I could be wrong , I'm no expert on the books .

I respectfully disagree. I think Fleming most definitely had an idea on what characteristics Bond should have and how those traits should be portrayed to the reader.

How many times is everyone going to see Spectre? With this $100 card, you get unlimited viewings. So essentially this card pays for itself if you plan on going to the movie twice (haha), but seriously, an adult ticket is ~$12 so you'd have to go see this movie 9 times to get your money's worth. Who goes and sees the same movie in the theater 9 times? ...Come to think of it, I would do this for TFA but only after knowing the movie was good and I planned on going to see it multiple times.

That card looks awesome, but no way would it pay for itself for me. I'll probably see the movie once or twice, and then wait for the Blu-ray before watching it again.

Start with Casino Royale. It should be a cheap enough read, but it's a good intro. But I mean, I can tell you what Bond thought on, say, Americans (generally liked but not as good as British). What his preferred dress was (navy blue worsted single breasted suit, white shirt, knitted black tie. Moccasins - he hated laces. Rolex). His favourite breakfast (scrambled eggs). His cigarettes (made by Morlands of Grosvenor St). His sports (golf, skiing). The women in his life (his secretaries, Moneypenny etc). It's all in the books.

exactly. i always thought he was Fleming's alter ego, although he denied it. He comes off as a womanizer , yet he always ends up falling for whatever girl is in the story, and often doesn't end up with them.

i just love Fleming's descriptions of Bond's meals. His first in new york in live and let die sounded particular good.

Oh of course; people look for inspirations for Bond - "He was this Canadian! That American! These Brits!"

Rubbish. He was who Ian daydreamed of being. Not who Ian was.

the one inconsistency i noticed is Bond got a new Bentley at the end of Moonraker, but then was back driving an older one a few books later.

    No, the Bentleys are fine.

Casino Royale - Bentley 4 1/2 litre blower. Battleship grey. Badly damaged in the crash engineered by Le Chiffre.
Live and Let Die - The blower is mentioned only.
Moonraker - the Blower is destroyed. Bond then buys a 1953 Mark VI Bentley with winnings from a card game.
Thunderball, OHMSS - Bond has traded in for a "Mark II Continential", the Type R fastback. He's upgraded it in OHMSS with an Arnott supercharger and magnetic clutch that causes Rolls Royce to "disown it"

That alone is more of a direct love letter to Barry than most of the attempts in recent years. If those strains came in over the top of a film from the 60s or 70s you'd automatically guess it was him.

    Colour me curious.
