I pointed all this out when it first came up in the other thread:

But people continue to blow it up into drama.

I don't think Wilson and Broccoli quite understood what they had to do with the Brosnan era, i.e. the priority was to honour Cubby Broccoli's legacy and continue down that path, but the problem is they totally lost sight of Bond's point of difference from other action heroes and so you get some really homogenous works like Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day.

But DAD was the recession this third phase of EON had to have, and as Ender says I think they've remembered that it's Fleming they have to honour more than Cubby. The place they're in now is really unprecedented in the canon and they've opened the door to two things which were previously unthinkable: giving the Bond actor a degree of power to shape and influence what their tenure will look like, to the stage where now Craig is a credited co-producer on Spectre, and also to enlist a higher class of filmmaker and give him power too - of course they previously had feted helmers like Lewis Gilbert and Michael Apted have a go previously, but those guys were basically treated the same way as anyone else from what I can tell. So there's really no going back now, until Gregg Wilson and whoever takes over and then they have to make their own mistakes.

Which director would you like to see working on Bond?

I'm not really up with current British directors, so no idea.

I would've loved Joe Wright to have a crack at it, but Pan might've killed his chances.

I'd also look at David Michod, Andrew Dominik, or Duncan Jones.

Yeah, with the move to Mendes and the wild success of Skyfall, in some way the next director is a more interesting question than the next actor.

Personally, I think Anton Corbijn would be a good fit.

I'd like Corbijn too, but COMMONWEALTH ONLY IS THE RULE

    What.

    Jabbadabbado account for your idiocy!

If anything, Dalton is the Clone Wars series, which redeemed the prequels.

Having read a bunch of the reviews, the reaction to Spectre seems mixed - though some reviews give it five stars, some give it three and indicate it's an uninspired return to formula.

A very good first half seems to give way to a more problematic second, which was something the script leaks suggested all those months ago.

He wasn't actually licensed to kill, but... well, you know.

Anyway, glad to see these mostly positive Spectre reviews coming in.

Also, another three TV spots for your viewing pleasure:

Those are good points. I also remember an interview with Daniel Craig where he said that Mike Myers "f'd things up for us". If I recall correctly, he was talking about some Bond themes in general, but Blofeld in particular was probably a big part of that.

We're doing the reviews thing in the Spectre thread, VLM. And we've kind of already done it. Try to keep up. :p
