World population stabilization unlikely this century

Another China and India added to the global population within my statistical lifespan? Even ignoring the challenge of feeding these people and providing them with potable water and access to modern energy, you can pretty much kiss any attempt at climate change mitigation goodbye.

This is already why ebola is breaking out all over the place in Africa. Destruction and fragmentation of the habitats that house the wild animals that harbor the virus is exposing more people to the virus more often. This is only a temporary problem, of course, and will be solved when these habitats have been completely erased from the surface of the earth.

I've been preoccupied with Scotland. Did you know the entire population of Scotland would not feed the rest of the world's people for a single meal?

They don't taste too good otherwise. On the plus side they usually come with a whisky marinade

 

The UN's recent climate change report made an effort to tie mitigation efforts to the growth rate of the human population, but I don't think anyone is making the case strongly enough. There's no question that the next 4 billion humans are going to be mostly very lucky to even obtain a subsistence-level of food/shelter/water security.

I don't think there's any way of getting around the fact that if this comes to pass it is an absolute catastrophe for the people of sub-Saharan Africa if they add 3 billion to their population by 2100. All the problems they're facing now in terms of poverty, public health, political instability/armed strife, habitat loss and fragmentation, food and water security, etc. will be magnified several fold.
