Well, regarding the score of the film...

David Arnold scored the last three Bond films as well;

"Tomorrow Never Dies", "The World Is Not Enough" and "Die Another Day".

When he was chosen to score his first Bond film it was because the producers and director (Roger Spottiswood) knew he was an avid fan of John Barry's scores for the series. In fact, David Arnold released a CD entitled "THE DAVID ARNOLD 007 PROJECT" featuring cover tunes of many of the most popular James Bond themes performed by some of England's top artists. David Arnold also arranged the music to make it more contemporary in feel but while also retaining the "style" and "feel" of a classic John Barry Bond score.

After he recorded that CD and released it...the producers knew he was their man to score "Tomorrow Never Dies". See, in "Goldeneye", Pierce's first Bond outing, they hired a French composer (who shall remain nameless) to score the film. The classic Bond theme was only featured once in the film and during Bond's most heroic moment (tank chase through Moscow). While the French composer's efforts to reinvent the Bond-score for a new era should be applauded and were hailed by many music and movie fans, there were also many fans and critics who compained about the style of the score and the lack of use of the Bond theme. So, the producers actually listened to the compaints and hired Arnold for a return to the more classic style of John Barry.

If you listen to the scores for the film ("TOMORROW" in particular), you'll notice a very distinct homage to Barry in David Arnold's style of composition; replying mainly on the French Horn and high register strings (violins) for a lot of the themes, writing very sweeping and grandiose themes that are highly reminiscent of Barry. There's one moment in "THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH" that absolutely SCREAMS John Barry. Bond and Elektra have just jumped off a helicopter in order to ski through the mountains and the scene is shot from a helicopter shot in a very lush and beautiful moment of photography. The music in this scene could not be more like John Barry if it tried.

As the films progressed, David Arnold incorporated more of his own style into the scores; mixing electronic and synthesizer elements to the score, laying down some pretty progressive (techno and post/rock and roll) drum tracks to accompany the music. But, even though Arnold incorporated his signature style...he also paid heed to what he and the viewers wanted to hear...c;assic James Bond scores in the vein of John Barry.

I expect nothing less from Arnold in the next film and that's one of the only things I'm actually looking forward to regarding the film's release.

 

To make a long story short, I am in complete agreement with you.

Pierce Brosnan was the perfect James Bond. Well, as perfect as you can get trying to fill the shoes of character who?s precedent was set by Sean Connery. Brosnan just fit the bill ? he naturally looks like that kind of secret-agent-guy.

In my opinion, ?Goldeneye? is one of the best Bond films ever made. It had a great actor playing the antagonist role of a 00-agent gone bad, was full of Russian espionage, had an awesome femme fatale, tanks in the streets, and an exploding pen to boot. As for Brosnan?s other films, I wasn?t a big fan of any of them. They were okay, I guess, but like you said they were all about explosions and bigger explosions. However, my problem was with the films themselves, not Brosnan?s acting.

As for this Daniel Craig fellow? ugh. One thing?s for sure, if they wanted to pick someone who would better fit Fleming?s unattractive hero, they sure got that one down. However, I don?t know if that?s the image they should shoot for. The Bond Films have a James Bond incarnation of their own, and I don?t see why they need to move away from that. The "film Bond" is tall, dark, and handsome. Daniel Craig is none of those things. He?s blonde, for the love of Q!

That?s a good analogy with Rick Berman and Star Trek. I?m a big fan of the first three series, but I don?t think I have ever managed to sit through a single episode of Voyager or Enterprise. They strayed too far from the original vision, and it just doesn?t sit too well with me. I?ll probably get around to watching all the Berman-era Trek some day, but right now there are many other franchises I?d rather indulge in.

Now about this ?Casino Royal? movie; I?m going to be honest with you: I want to see it. Although I really don?t think Daniel Craig is up to the task, the trailer looks great and I?ve watched it multiple times now. Aside from the new lead role, it appears to have all the goods. Creepy villains, beautiful women, minimalist action sequences, gambling, cool weapons, more beautiful women? As much as I like Brosnan, I can?t help but admit that I?m more excited about ?Casino Royal? than I was the last couple of Bond films.

In the end, James Bond is just womanizing, killing machine. We probably shouldn?t admire him anyway. Nevertheless, he?s a part of our movie heritage, and most of us love every part about him. To see him played by Daniel Craig makes my eyes roll right out of their sockets, and I?m really sad to see Brosnan nudged out of the role. But despite Craig?s appearance, I?m definitely going to give this Bond a chance. Hell, who knows, maybe he?ll shake things up a bit.

I mean, one season, I was just getting use to things, and wham, a change.

O MY GOSH is that movie funny.
The "Game" made me cry laughing. Especially at the end when Mitch got the last laugh.
And I tell ya... It really made me think twice about not leaving tip's for waiter's.
I loved the casting in this movie,well I could have done without the two white ghetto wannabes.
But all in all this movie was totally better then I thought it was going to be.

 

Prarie Home Companion

I've listened to the radio show all my life so the idea is special to me for them to do a movie about it. However, I must say I'm kinda dissapointed. Not in the acting, it was fantastic. Everyone was wonderful and I really did find myself laughing until I couldn't breathe but it wasn't like the show. There was no Lake Woebegone stuff, just singing and the crazy plot thing that I kinda get but kinda don't.

No new trailers. The Ghost Rider trailer is still cool a second time around. Pumped to see that even though I've never laid eyes on the comic.

The theater girls didn't know where Pirates was going to be but it sounded like Superman was at the east theater and Pirates might be on the west side. Eitherway tickets go on sale the 27th but I didn't know if that was for a midnight or not. I told them the first showing they offer I'll be there for. If it's a midnight I'll be there at 10. I <3 my some Pirates, ya'll know that.

 

Of course I went to see Pirates at the midnight showing. I'm just now getting to sit down and post about it. I won't post spoilers but just give you my opinion from a super fan.

The plot is much more twisted and a little more complicated this time around. They use a lot more sea lore (which I liked I think they were to afraid in the first one because of the camp factor) and I think it really works. Davey Jones was amazing. The CG and makeup elements were very good although there were times (not involved with Jones I think) that I was like "Ok even my mom and dad could tell that's CG" but whatever. Disney kinda dropped the ball but it was only a few times.

The Kraken was amazing and provided some of the craziest battle scenes. The tri-way sword fight was amazing. I didn't know who to watch and Elizabeth's reaction during the fight (her just sitting there afre a while and being like "Boys r stoopid" was funny).

Jack was Jack. I didn't think that they could top his enterence from the first one but they did. I didn't see any progression in Will's character, which was sad to me. And I don't like what they did with Elizabeth either. Hopefully she'll redeem herself in the third one because right now I don't care for her. Still <3 Kiera and am getting my hair cut like her but yeah.

Music was good, better than last time. Last time is was like Klaus could only come up with one theme and then he beat that into the ground in every track. This time Hanz Zimmer takes over (he only supervised the first one) and it's great. They keep the first theme (which I really like) but expand on it and sometimes don't use it at all .

I really enjoyed it. It's a great ride. There are jokes that carry over from the first one and stuff that happens that you kinda have to see the first one to get (there were times that I was the only one in the theater laughing because I used to watch the movie daily for about 3 or 4 month) but it could stand on its own. There is alot more explained (the compass that doesn't point north for one) that was interesting and a lot that was introduced that I hope will be explained.

And for those of you that check the IMDB's cast list for DMC and saw Barbosa and was like "OMG flashback time!" like I was, you are so wrong. I cried near the end (if you go and know the name of my car I think you'll see why I cry) and then at the very end was like "WTF DISNEY OMG YOU F*ING RULE!".

Go see Pirates. I'm going tomorrow (Sunday) again and plan on hitting it every weekend after it goes to $5 Club.

 

I loved the dog being the tribes god at the end of the credits.

 

*missed that* I went with my younger sister and a friend of hers and they just got up and left. I'll stay the next time I go later this week.

 

Have not seen Pirates, .....yet

but am looking forward to it.

understand, that it has set an all time box office record for a single day
and an opening weekend, de-throning Spiderman!

also.....never leave your favorite film, until after the credits have played,
no matter who you are with.....we just gotta train more people, that there is
music to listen to, credits to read, and maybe more.

but, I have given up the practice of waiting around until the film starts again,
just to make sure I have seen everything

I refuse to accept the validity of "PIRATES 2" breaking "SPIDER-MAN"'s three-day record or of "PIRATES 2" breaking "EPISODE III"'s one day take of $50 million, and here's why...

"PIRATES 2" opened (intypical Disney conglomerate fashion!) on over 4,100 screens! That is absolutely ridiculous! "SITH" opened on 500 less screens...so the one day take of "EPISODE III" actually averaged about $150 dollars more PER SCREEN than "PIRATES 2". So, yes, technically, "PIRATES 2" beat the one-day record...but it also did less business per screen than "SITH". And when you stop to think that ticket prices have one again gone up at least 25 cents from last summer...it makes "EPISODE III"'s achievement even more impressive.

That brings me to my point about "SPIDER-MAN". If you adjust the amount of money Spidey did in its three days for inflation (ticket prices are in general at least $1.25 more expensive than they were in 2002) and also take into consideration the fact that Spidey opened on less screens..."SPIDER-MAN" is still king. SUre, not "technically"...but in every way that really matters.

I mean, hell, if I made a semi-decent blockbuster and publicized the hell out of it and opened it on 5,800 screens...I'm confident that I could beat a box-office record as well. I hate the fact that Disney, or any company for that matter, over-saturates the market with their publicity and opens their film on 9 ba-zillion screens and then brags about "Oooooh, we set a record!"...

Great...doesn't matter to me because your film was still a mediocre piece of crap that was way too long and not as fun as it should have been.

That's how I felt about "PIRATES 2", by the way...sorry, Sarah. I wanted to love it...and I actually liked it more than the 1st one...but, for me, that's not saying much. It was just "okay" to me. It certainly can't compare to "EPISODE III"...that's for damn sure. But, fill the public's head with the same commercials over and over again, fill every cineplex with prints of it so that it overwhelms them (it's on at least half the screens in theaters in LA) and sure, you're gonna "break" records. Whatever...

Oh yeah...when Hans Zimmer is writing music the way he did for "PIRATES 2"...he sucks. When he's writing music like he did for "AS GOOD AS IT GETS" or "THE DaVINCI CODE"...he's actually quite amazing. His score for "PIRATES 2" was minimalistic, repetitive, dull and just plain sucky. I don't care how many of the themes he used from the first film...it was repetitive crap. The only part about it that was good was the music box music. That's it.

block.....all day...oh, that was Star Wars in 77)

Yes, these are all valid, and for my money, given,
that there was almost no budget for the original
STAR WARS,and factoring all the above calculations
this is still the all time winner

tho, I think the original ROCKY was made for 10-cents,
and racked in millions

But, gotta admit, while writing this, I really miss,
the mega-movie-houses.......that had only 1-screen
and 1000 to 2000 in seating, and some even had
2-balconies......(there were double/triple features
in the old days, but no multi-screens that I can remember
during the 50s and 60s and a lot of the 70s)
and then over the years, the old large theatres were either
all torn down, and/or converted into multi-screen
venues.....I know, I know, I-m just too old

I went to the 12:01 showing on Thursday night and sat back row middle...nice seats, much better than the ROTS seats that we had.
Anyway, the movie was too long and many of the scenes could have ended sooner to progress the story along. I liked the first one much better for the "newness" factor and the story was a little more solid overall. I enjoyed my experience of the theater, because I love the midnight showings, but was a little disappointed in the movie.

I thought that Superman Returns was a superior movie for story and
CGI. I was never bored, unlike POTCMC, and loved the homages to the original 1978 version.

Anyway, the box office is what it is and POTCMC is the new king of the single day and opening weekend. I was quite surprised to hear that...but, if you want to talk ticket prices, Gone With the Wind is still number one, adjusted for inflation.

Screw that crap about "PIRATES 2" being king of anything...

the only thing that film is king of is the land of mediocre-doo-doo films!

 

Wow! Lito, really thinks this movie is mediocre...money is money and according to the box office, this movie is now #1 for single day and weekend...pull out all the averages you want, but total money is all the box office records really care about and that says POTCMC is now #1. Here is the real question...will it reach $300 million, $400 million or beyond?

I must say it has a lot going for it...unlike most big budget action movies, this one has the teenie girls all over it because of Depp/Bloom...which is what Titanic had going for it with the love story with Leo. How did Titanic make $600 million: repeat business from young women and girls. Can this movie do that? NAH! But, it could reach top 10 status for money made.

Anyway, the Disney people oversaturated their product and won. Now, if Lucas puts ROTS is 4100 theaters, it could have made $55 million in the first day, but he didn't.

everyone relax and go see Clerks II on 7/21 and don't forget Mace Windu(Samuel L Jackson) in Snakes on a Plane coming in August. I am so there to see the already famous line...I am sick of the m..... f...... snakes on this m..... f...... plane.

 

For the record...I don't "hate" the movie. I just think it was mediocre as hell and doesn't deserve to hold any records. Also, I wasn't "crying", I was merely stating how I feel about it; complaining about something does not equate "crying".

I seen POTC 2 yesterday & I have to say I completely loved it. I re-watched COTBP right before going to see DMC and I liked it more then my lone time of seeing it in the theater 3 years ago.
As far as part 2, Wow . I thought it was beater the the first.I'm very looking forward to May 07 to see part 3. It was fun,exciting & more then I thought it was going to be ,Hearing all the crappy reviews that are floating around.

Final Grade: B+

 

Have finally seen

Superman Returns

and, well, it was ok, The guy playing superman,
has the potential to make this series come alive again,

and comparrisons to previous men of steel are inevitable.

I consider it a hopeful sign for the future at I sat there going,
that was bad, but that was good, but that was bad, but that was good,
and
that was him, and that was animated, and that was him, and that was animated,
and
original music, new music, original music, new music

Music note: Must have been pretty good, as I have no memory of it bothering me,
and this usually means, the second time I pay attention to only the music,
I will probly be buying the sound track album.

also, the dedication to Christopher and Dana Reeve, at the end
was a nice touch.

and Noel Neill was fun to see....she is almost 86!

but, I really liked that other Lois Lane girl, Phyllis Coates
who I think is also still around at, 79

Clerks II
This is a small review , I liked it , but no where near the first Clerks.
The "Battle of the Trilogy's" Sean is soooo funny. It did go a little over the edge with two Sean's ,but all in all I was entertain for 90 min.

Final Grade = C++
