http://www.pzzl.nl/newsday/crossword/pdf/newsday050706.pdf While doing my daily crossword puzzle from the on-line version of the 7-6-05 ChicagoSunTimes.com I came across 26-down....R2-D2s owner.....as a clue, and the puzzle points to Leia as the answer, and as I thought of sayings like, possession is ....... I thought that there must be an entire galaxy of fans with an opinion, or, I am suspicious that this has several point of view possibilities....
Very good question...... Although, I would guess, that the citizens of Naboo were the original owners because R2 was assigned to the Royal Starship.... BUT....it was Leia who ended up with him....so...she and Luke were the last ones, to date, that "own" him.
r2-d2's original owner is Padme. she cleaned him and appointed him to the royal starship. then in ROTS anakin took r2 on his missions. when padme died both droids were given to antilles by bail organa. in ANH r2d2 said his owner was obi wan kanobi, but kanobi said he didn't recall owning any droids . r2 was on the ship with leia. in ESB r2 was with luke and leia as well as ROTJ. r2d2 was never said to be "OWNED" by anyone. they both were just passed around as helpers and watchers, but not actually owned as property.

I think Liea officialy owns R2, because he was a droid of Alderaan and all, but they freely pass him to Luke. But realy, it has been established that droids can be sentient in the Medstar books. 3PO fears his death in another book. Why don't they just free them? I wouldn't mind seeing a civil war in the GFFA to liberate the droids.
runs off, studies ANH, and yes, C3P0 does say that Captain Antillies, was their last master, but, C3P0 also says, to R2D2, about Luke, It's ok. You can trust him. He's our new master now. though, both he and R2 still have restraining bolts on them at this time. and of course, Uncle Owen, thinks the Droids belong to him, .....and why not, He bought them, and Luke is only a nephew, and the way he treats them, Luke is probly not even in the will on another note, very much appreciate the information on areas I know little of, like info about R2D2 in print, and the EU. and on yet another note......of why is this.... C3P0 referes to (introduces to Luke) R2-D2 as being C3P0-s counter-part.......or, this kinda implies that all R2 units, can have or need....a counter part...... well, at least in this scene, as Luke really needs C3P0 to translate R2-D2.......but then, that is is getting away from who owns R2D2 or Naboo is part of the imperial senate, and goes on a Jedi mission to rescue Palpatine.....I kinda see him as being given to the Jedi as the most recent owner. oh where are those droid experts when you need them. Perhaps, I should have asked, How many owners has R2 had and why?
R2 has no owner, he is a free spirit that cannot be bound by the rules of ownership Oh and I think Lucas owns him and all likeness rights
