    A Chance Meeting

Luke Skywalkers first meeting with Obi Wan Kenobi?

He sits alone atop a high peak peering through electrobinoculars. He scans the horizon and settles on a homestead. He smiles as he sees evidence of life. A child runs in small circles, kicking up dust trails that follow him like a small tornado while the parents encourage the youth. He pulls his eyes from the viewing device only long enough to wipe sweat from his brow with his thick beige sleeve?

The Lars homestead is located on a desert rock world named Tatooine. Here, twin suns bake the surface during the day and with no major bodies of water this resource is a valuable commodity. Owen and Beru Lars are moisture farmers. They use special equipment to pull moisture from the dry air and funnel it to underground reservoirs that hold drinking water. These reservoirs also irrigate the underground gardens that provide crops of fruits and vegetables that the Lars sell.

There are several other moisture farmers spread out across the harsh surface of Tatooine. They scratch out their existence by selling their crops to local vendors. A typical moisture farmer is a hard worker and has a strong moral fiber. They are protective of their crops and can be reclusive, but are willing to help those in need. This particular trait was noticed by a Jedi Knight. This knight proposed a great responsibility to the Lars?. They accepted.

Obi Wan Kenobi, Jedi Knight and General had brought this responsibility to the Lars homestead almost twelve standard years ago. He kept a watchful eye over the Lars?. That was his responsibility. One he did not take lightly because Obi Wan was only one of two remaining Jedi that he knew of. The responsibility placed in the hard working yet loving care of the Lars was the only son of the chosen one, he who was to bring balance to the Force. But the prophecy was not fulfilled. In some strange twist of fate, or the Forces idea of a cruel joke, the chosen one fell to the seduction of the Dark Side. He became a harbinger of hate that helped destroy the Jedi and all they stood for. Perhaps, one day, this child would grow to fulfill his fathers legacy and take it as his own. Obi Wan can still sense the childs strong presence in the Force, just as he did the day Luke Skywalker was born.

Obi Wan rises from his lookout spot on the outskirts of the settlement, returning the binoculars to a Bantha hide pouch on his side, and turns back towards the Jundland Wastes. His hut is on the other side near the Dune Sea and is a long walk from the Lars homestead. ?Perhaps it?s time to introduce myself.? Obi Wan thinks to himself, as if the thought were formed in his mind by the Force itself. Obi Wan smiles wider as he begins his treacherous journey into the wastes?

The sandy haired boy gallops into the kitchen, dust and dirt cover his clothes and face. Beru takes a moment from cutting vegetables to witness the small whirlwind of energy before her. She looks back down to her vegetables and begins cutting again. Luke gingerly climbs onto the countertop to fetch a cup.

?Luke, if you need something that you can?t reach all you need to do is ask.? Beru said lightly.
?But I can get it myself Aunt Beru.? Luke replied defensively.
?I know you can Luke. I just don?t want to see you fall and get hurt.? explained Beru.
?Oh Aunt, I?ve fallen from higher places than this in the dunes with Biggs.? Luke said, then immediately regretted letting that slip. ?But not much higher!? he quickly added.

Beru continues her task, looking over the boy as he fills his cup from a dispenser set within the wall. Her mouth forms a smile as she wonders to herself what mischief the child gets into when unattended. A tall stocky man steps to the threshold of the kitchen area, casting a long shadow. Luke knows who is in the kitchen before he even turns to face him. Somehow, Luke could feel him coming. The man has an imposing presence. The desert environment has toughened his dark tan skin. His dark hair is graying.

?Yes Uncle Owen, my chores are done.? Luke said, answering a question he knew was coming.
?Good.? Owen nodded as he also reached for a cup.

Luke and Owen both join Beru at the table. The two males take long gulps of water, emptying their cups quickly. Owen sets his cup on the table as Luke rises to fill his cup again. ?Can I get you some more?? he asks his uncle. Owen nods an affirmative and the youth gladly fills both cups at the dispenser. Owen looks Luke up and down, as if measuring him for a great task.

?This seasons harvest is ready for market.? Owen said in his gruff tone. ?Maybe its time you came along with me. See how the business is run, you interested??

Lukes face shines like a beacon at the invitation. Trips into Anchorhead come rarely and are much anticipated to break up the monotony of farm life.

?You bet!? exclaims Luke in a way that only a child can. ?Can we look for parts for the T-16? Please? I?ll use my allowance money.?

Luke had been working on the old Skyhopper for the past two seasons and had come a long way. A few new power cells, fan belts, and a lateral thrust control should get the craft airborne. The prospect of completing this project filled him with excitement.

?Fine. But don?t think you?re going to go off with your friends whenever you please.? warned Owen.

Owen was skeptical that Luke would ever be able to get the T-16 up and running again, especially without any technical training. So he agreed to let the lad work on it as a hobby as long as his chores were done. Now that the hobby was almost complete, Owen had to admit to himself that this child was indeed very special. Luke had a way with repairing old junk, just like his father.

?Help me bundle the crops for transport. We?ll leave in the morning after a good nights rest.?

Luke gulps down the rest of his water in one swallow and rushes out of the kitchen heading for the garden. Owen shifts in his chair as he watches Luke run behind him eagerly, leaving a trail of flying dust on the pathway. Owen turns back to Beru, who is smiling at him with a wide grin.

    ?What?!?? he asks incredulously.

Beru fixes Owen with a soft look as she reaches across the stone white table top, firmly gripping his resting hands.

?You did well Lars.? she said softly.
?Well?I just figure its time for him to start learning how business is handled.? Owen said scratching his head. ?Someday all of this will be his.?
?I don?t know Owen; somehow I feel the life of a farmer is not for him. He has a strong sense of adventure.? Beru said looking out into the courtyard. ?It?s in his blood.?
?Not if I can help it. I won?t allow it.? he said sternly.
?Owen, you can?t hold him back forever. His destiny will find him if he doesn?t find it first.? Beru said with a smile. Owen stared

After breakfast Owen and Luke head to the garage. Owen gives the hovercart a once over, checking connections and basket fittings. He nods to Luke acknowledging his thorough inspection, and pats the lad on his head further messing his already messy hair. Owen retrieves a rifle from a rack behind the hovercart and places it behind the bench seat of the cart. He then hands Luke a small holdout blaster which Luke places in a holster attached to his utility belt.

Owen felt secure in letting Luke have his own weapon. Luke had proven himself to be an accurate marksman from the age of six and handled the responsibility with an unusually high degree of maturity for someone his age. Traveling at night was exponentially worse than during the day, still the trek to Anchorhead held many dangers. It was Owens belief to always be prepared for the worse. ?Better safe than sorry.? he always told Luke.

Once the emergency provisions were loaded, the two men headed off towards Anchorhead. With the hovercart attached to the speeder the journey would be slower, but that didn?t bother Luke at all. The thoughts of adventure in Anchorhead and the sensation of his hair whipping in the wind filled him with an indescribable excitement.

Obi Wan Kenobi leans over the sink in his fresher unit, both hands planted firmly on each side. He stares at his reflection for a long moment. The years have weathered away his youthful appearance. His forehead is lined with age and only a small amount of dusty brown color remains in his hair and beard. Yet his eyes remain as clear and alert as ever. His mental awareness has grown with the many years of meditation and self study.

Today Obi Wan finds controlling his anxiety to be more difficult than normal. He hasn?t felt this anxious in years. He closes his eyes and takes a deep calming breath, exhaling it slowly. He finishes dressing and steps into the main living quarters to gather a few items, stuffing them into a travel bag. He grabs a chrome cylinder just barely two fists long. He stares at it for a moment, rolling it in the palm of his hand. He brings it closer to his face, to better see the details of the device. He points it out, away from his body as he presses a rectangular button in the center. A blue blade of energy creeps from the handle.

Obi Wan swings the blue blade in short sweeping arcs before him. The subtle hum emitted from the lightsaber reminds Obi Wan of times long ago. The adventures of his youth bring a smile to his face as he deactivates the saber, extinguishing the blade back into its hilt. Obi Wan flips the pommel one last time in his palm before placing it deep inside his robes, concealing it from sight. He exits his home and climbs into a non descript rusty red XJ 12 speeder. He fires the ignition and guides the speeder off in the direction of Anchorhead.

Owen Lars pilots the speeder into the outskirts of Anchorhead. Womprats scatter in all directions as the speeder approaches. Owen turns east on Windy Dune road slowing the speeder to a slow pace. Luke can barely contain his enthusiasm, his eyes dart from spacers to street folk to vendors hawking their wares along the boulevard. Luke can not help but notice how the pace of life here is much quicker than on the moisture farm and he finds its rhythm invigorating.

?We have three stops here in Anchorhead.? yelled Owen over the whine of the speeders engines and excess noise from the pedestrians. ?Then we can go to a junk dealer to look for your parts.?

Luke nods enthusiastically, still staring out at the flow of life around him. The speeder crawls to a stop in front of a corner shop. A Dug approaches the speeder, looking to the hovercart. The two humans? exit the speeder as Owen greets what Luke assumes is the proprietor of the shop they are at.

?Banna nu chota? welcomes the Dug as Owen approaches.
?Hello Neera? greets Owen in return.

Luke did as he was instructed. He remained behind Owen but near enough to over hear everything that was said. He listened on as O

The next two stops progressed in much the same way as the first. Greet, haggle, agree, unload. About halfway through the second transaction, Luke tuned the conversation between his uncle and the vendor completely out. Lukes thoughts drifted to acquiring the remaining parts needed for the T-16 and working on getting the old craft airborne again. More than once Owen had to snap Luke from his daydreams to unload the produce, but to Owens credit, he understood the boys desire and did not get upset with him.

?I have one more stop on the outskirts of town.? Owen said as he removed a few gallons of water from the top of the hovercart.

A frown quickly took root on Lukes young face, but he said nothing in reply.

?There?s a junk place just around that corner and down a few tents. If you think you can handle it on your own, you can go on ahead and start looking for the parts you need. With the load lightened on the cart, it shouldn?t take me long to get back here. Of course, that?s if you think you can handle that alone.?

The excitement rushed back into Luke so quickly, he felt as though he might actually jump out of his own skin. Owen could see the joy on Lukes face as he climbed into the speeder.

?That?s what I thought.? Owen said as he settled into his seat. ?Just remember what I told you about bartering. Don?t pay the price first asked for and you should do fine. I?ll be back in a few minutes so stay at the dealers and I?ll pick you up there. OK??

Luke nodded that he understood and he waved as his uncle pulled away. As soon as he could no longer see his uncle, Luke raced to the junk dealer kicking dirt up behind him as he ran.

It took Luke only a moment to find the junk dealers shop and he entered cautiously. The main area was dark with shadows and considerably cooler than it was just a mere five meters away out in the blazing suns. It took Luke another few minutes for his eyesight to adjust to the dark interior. Once Lukes vision cleared he stepped with slightly more confidence into the center of the shop. As Luke glanced around at various bins and containers overflowing with mismatched parts, two pairs of glowing yellow eyes approached that he instantly recognized as Jawas.

They chittered at Luke so quickly that he could not understand what they were saying, but he was sure that it was a greeting of some sort. Luke had some dealings with Jawas in the past, both from his uncle and in his search for spare parts. The Jawas had a reputation of salvaging anything that wasn?t tied down or guarded under lock and key, but they were also a good place to start if you needed something that was commonly found, cheap. Jawas were also skilled at repairing mechno-techno gear, anything from engines to droids and they only sold items that worked, but for how long was anyone?s guess.

Luke instructed the Jawas in the parts he sought and they scurried off in different directions to locate them as he continued to inspect various parts throughout the shop. Luke slowly made his way to an outside storage area that held the larger parts sold by the Jawas. Luke covered his eyes to shield back the bright light as he surveyed the larger than expected storage space. As he visually scanned the area, his senses locked onto a dull gray shell with blue markings buried under a pile of miscellaneous junk. Next to it was a robed figure staring intently at the buried object, the hood of his robe resting gently on his head.

Luke could sense a wave of warm feelings being projected at him from the stranger. There was a familiarity to this man that Luke could not place, as if he had known this man his whole life but was just now seeing him for the first time. This comforted him and he steadily approached the object that held the strangers attention. He knelt down to better inspect the corroding metal before him.

The shell reminded Luke of a cockpit design. He could see the damaged and cracked gauges lining the interior of the cockpit along with an occasional gap of exposed wiring where some device once

Ben removed a small helmet from deep within his robes. It was round and light made of a leathery hide that Luke could not place. The goggles were attached to the nose bridge and could slide down and lock into position. Luke eagerly tried the helmet on and needed to adjust it only slightly. Luke slid the goggles down and locked them into place smiling brightly.

?Thank you Ben. I don?t know how I can repay you.? Luke said as he removed the helmet, tucking it into the back of his utlity belt.
?You?re quite welcome Luke. I just hope you get some good use out of them.?

Ben tussled the boys hair with the palm of his hand as the sound of parts clanging caught the youths attention. The two Jawas approached, each carrying a box filled with various parts for Luke to rummage through. Luke raced towards the first box and began to inspect the power cells, tossing any damaged or unwanted ones over his shoulders, which set the Jawas into a frenzy. Ben calmed them as Luke continued onto the second box of parts. After a few moments Luke found all the parts he required and rounded them up into a corner. Ben stayed out of the way as Luke began negotiating the price of the parts.

After a few moments of negotiating Ben could sense desperation coming from Luke. The boy began to kick at the ground and seemed on the verge of yelling at the Jawas. Ben began to sense Lukes attitude shifting to anger and debated whether or not to intervene. After reflecting on Anakins famous temper tantrums, he decided to calm the boy down. Ben took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly before approaching.

?What?s the matter Luke?? Ben inquired.
?The Jawas. They refuse to lower their price on the thrust controller I need. I only have enough for the power cells.? Luke said, beginning to feel embarrassed.
?I see.? said Ben, a contemplating look on his face. ?Losing your temper is not the solution. I am sure another alternative will present itself, but you should never allow your emotions to control your actions.?
?I know. It?s just that I?m so close to fixing the Skyhopper?Maybe my uncle will give me the extra credits I need. He can take it out of my allowance.? Luke said excitedly.
?See. There are other alternatives. Remember to remain calm. Focus on the problem, not what emotions the problems cause you.? instructed Ben.

?And what problems might those be?? came a deep voice behind them.

Obi Wan knew whose voice it was before he turned to face him.

?I was just advising the boy on how to better handle his temper.? Obi Wan explained.
?Kenobi. Somehow I knew you would turn up. You promised you would not interfere. Are you now going back on your word?? Owen Lars angrily asked.

Luke carried a look of utter disbelief on his face. The fact that his uncle somehow knew Ben came as quite a shock. He remained silent as the two men continued their conversation.

?Of course not, I?m here looking for a KDH relay adapter. This is purely coincidental.? Obi Wan said, maintaining his calm appearance.
?I thought there was no coincidence as far as you?re concerned? No luck.? Owen shot back.
?Well, I can see you?re quite upset.? Kenobi replied. ?I have what I came here for so if you?ll excuse me.?

Obi Wan bowed slightly to Owen unblinkingly and turned to leave. Before two steps had been taken he glanced to Luke, who still appeared to be shocked, and smiled.

?Remember young Luke, control your feelings or they will forever control you.?

Obi Wan Kenobi collected his parts and handed the Jawas credits for his purchase. He left without saying another word. Luke looked to his uncle and noticed that his face was almost purple with anger and made a quick mental comparison of the two men. He reminded himself how Ben had remained calm, never raised his voice, never speaking without weighing the outcome of his words. On the other hand he looked at the frustration etched into his uncles face. He knew if the conversation, if it could have been truly called that, continued he felt that his uncle might have done or said something foolish.
