    Title: A Desperately Needed Vacation
    Author: Kadi
    Timeframe: 7 years before TPM
    Genre: Vignette
Summary: An unsanctioned vacation has a strange consequence for a certain young Padawan.
Notes: a response to [link=]The JC Title Challenge[/link]

?Do I even want to know??

    ?I doubt it, Master.?

Qui-Gon Jinn had seen many bewildering sights during his lifetime as a Jedi, but this beat them all.

The 18-year-old apprentice was desperately looking around to avoid his master?s gaze. Qui-Gon took another look past the embarrassed Padawan. Several yards away stood the Republic cruiser that had shuttled Obi-Wan to his first solo mission.

    It was a simple assignment.

Escort the daughter of the Corellian senator home. The senator had been receiving death threats and had feared for his child?s life. Qui-Gon had had no doubts that his Padawan could handle protecting her while he investigated the threats. Thankfully, the terrorist had been apprehended without anyone coming to harm.

?How?? There were many questions running through his mind, but this was foremost.

?The people of Podar have a rather?peculiar trait which the data files failed to mention.?

?Podar? What were you doing on Podar??

?Well, Jaz commented that he desperately needed a vacation after being stuck on the cruiser with the senator?s daughter, and I-?

Qui-Gon held up a hand. ?Jaz??

    ?The pilot, Master.?

    ?Ah. Continue.?

?I didn?t see the harm in taking a?detour to Podar. Reeft went there once and enjoyed it immensely?only now do I see why.?

?Obi-Wan, that still doesn?t explain?? Having no words to describe the scene behind him, he only gestured. How many were there?

Obi-Wan groaned. The spectacle was beginning to attract attention.

Qui-Gon found he could not draw his gaze from the cruiser, or more specifically, from what was coming out of the cruiser.

?Like I said, the Podareet have a very strange cultural trait.?

    "Padawan, how??

?Well, Master?I complimented them.? Obi-Wan sighed.

?I complimented them. When the governor discovered I was a Jedi, he gave me a detailed tour of the capitol, including the military base. Their security measures were impressive for a small planet such as Podar, so I complimented him on it?? Obi-Wan grimaced as his master began to rub the bridge of his nose.

A sure sign his patience was being severely tested.

He sighed again. ?Apparently, you have to be very cautious as to what you compliment. They seem inclined to give you whatever you admire. I tried to refuse, but I didn?t think you?d appreciate a galactic incident on our hands so-?

The master cut his apprentice off again. ?Enough, Padawan. I?m sure I will hear the complete story when you explain to the Council why the Order now possesses an entire battalion of battle droids.?

Much to Qui-Gon?s relief, the droids finally finished marching out of the cruiser?s cockpit. His Padawan was less than thrilled however, as the droids were now standing at attention behind him awaiting orders. Word seemed to have gotten out about the spectacle in the hanger, for the crowd was growing larger.

?Master?? Obi-Wan was now as red as the cruiser which he had traveled in. ?What should I do??

?Honestly, Padawan?? Qui-Gon sighed. ?I haven?t the slightest.? The Master suddenly felt very tired. He was getting too old for this. ?Come along, Padawan. I?m sure we?ll be hearing from the Council soon.?

?Yes Master.? Obi-Wan mumbled, wishing that the planet would open and swallow him whole. The Padawan proceeded to follow his Master.

The entire battalion of battle droids proceeded to follow him.

Qui-Gon froze mid-step as the sound of hundreds of droids stepping in unison echoed throughout the temple hanger.

Obi-Wan winced and quickly turned toward the droids. ?Uh?captain??

One of the droids marched forward.

    ?Um?remain here until further orders.?

    ?Does not compute.?

Obi-Wan looked at the droid in dismay. He had a bad feeling about this. ?What??

    ?Does not compute.?

?I order you to remain here.?

    ?Does not compute.?

He glanced over his shoulder at his master, who just shook his head.

    ?Why doesn?t it compute??

    ?Orders defy programming.?

    ?Excuse me??

    ?Orders def-?

    ?No. What programming??

?Protect Jedi Apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi at all times.?

    ?And who instituted this?programming??

    ?Governor Hodir of Podar.?

?Is there any way to?override this programming?? He asked hopefully, trying to keep the panic he was feeling from his voice.

    ?Does not compute.?

Obi-Wan groaned and took a step towards his master.

    The droids followed suit.

    ?Master, what should I do??

Before Qui-Gon could respond a certain ancient master hobbled through the crowd, towards them.

?Master Yoda.? Both Jedi bowed to the elder master.

?How know that you are responsible for this, did I?? Yoda grumbled as he took in the scene slowly. ?Need this, the Council does not.? He said, whacking Obi-Wan in the shins to emphasize his point.

The droids reacted faster than expected.

Obi-wan suddenly found himself grabbed from behind and bodily carried to the center of the mass of droids.

The most respected Jedi Master in the Order found himself face to face with hundreds of blasters, ready to be fired at any moment. Not even his ear twitched, in case one of the droids happened to be trigger happy.

Every Jedi in the hanger reacted to this sudden threat, arming themselves accordingly. The normally peaceful hanger had turned into a battleground in a record amount of time.

For once in his life, Yoda wasn?t sure how to react. Qui-Gon was the only one not holding an activated lightsaber. Instead he stood in the middle of it, unsure whether to laugh or cry.

?Stand down!? A muffled voice cried out frantically from somewhere within the army. ?Stand down!?

The Padawan pushed his way out of the crowd, looking relieved to find Yoda still in one piece. The droids nervously moved with the apprentice as he moved towards the enemy. All blasters were still trained on Master Yoda.

?Away with your weapons.? Yoda ordered, noticing the many armed Jedi ready to leap to his defense.

The Jedi obeyed, the droids did not. He turned to Qui-Gon. ?Report to the Council now. Solve this, we will.?

?Master, perhaps I should wait here.? Obi-Wan began, but Yoda wouldn?t have it. ?Come you will.?

He began to hobble out of the hanger, only pausing to look over his shoulder. ?Now.?

Obi-Wan looked to his master helplessly.

    ?You heard him, Padawan.?

It was an odd procession that filed through the Temple that day.

An ancient Council member, a respected Jedi Master, and a Jedi Padawan, surrounded by battle droids, with blasters trained on the diminutive Councilor.

This is very funny. I liked how it started so innocently and then POW Obi-Wan is in trouble. I look forward to seeing how this plays out.

    Great job.

Delightful. How like Obi-Wan to get into trouble - and all because of a compliment! And that march through the Temple.... :D

I wonder how he's going to get out of this one...?

Oh, this is hilarious! I loved the droids pulling Obi-Wan to the center for protection, and how flustered he was. Poor Qui-Gon! At least he had the wisdom not to fight.

Thanks everyone for reading! I am so glad you've all enjoyed it.

?I?m glad that?s over with, Master.? The Padawan sighed with relief as the ship lifted off from the Temple, carrying his ?army? far away from him.

?As is the rest of the Order.? Qui-Gon replied.

It had been an interesting two weeks. The Council had been unable to deter the droids from their mission. Taking them apart hadn?t been an option either. Sadly, that conclusion had come through trial and error.

The Healers said Master Windu was on his way to a full recovery.

Obi-Wan grimaced at the memory. He didn?t want to meet up with the Councilor any time soon.

?Come Padawan. I think it?s high time for you to move back into our quarters.? The master slung one of the bags over his shoulder and headed inside. Obi-Wan quickly followed with the other. He had been forced to sleep out in the hanger, since their quarters couldn?t hold a battalion of battle droids. Not that he hadn?t tried.

Qui-Gon had been quick to end that nonsense. Especially when he found he was unable to even enter with so many droids trying to force their way in. This had been after Obi-Wan was kicked out of the Council meeting, when Master Windu was taken out by the droids.

Finally, they had flown Governor Hodir to Coruscant, to discuss the situation.

Obi-Wan bowed to the Governor, who looked over the droids behind him.

?I am so glad to see you in one piece still, Jedi Kenobi.? He said, grinning from ear to ear. ?They are following their programming??

?Yes, Governor. About that?? Obi-Wan said. ?It really wasn?t necessary.? He glanced at his master, who nodded for him to continue. ?Would it be possible for you to reverse it??

The Governor?s grin instantly disappeared as he turned to the apprentice. ?Reverse it? And leave you defenseless, especially after all the horrific stories you told me of your Jedi missions? I think not.?

?I am hardly without defenses as a Jedi.?

?I beg to differ, Padawan Kenobi, after all I?ve heard.?

?Governor, it?s not that I?m not grateful for your gift, but these droids are keeping-?

The stout man suddenly grew hostile. ?Are you saying my gift is less than adequate??

    ?No, not at-?

?I didn?t come here to be insulted. I-?

?Governor Hodir, I assure you my apprentice is grateful for your gift, and your consideration for his welfare. However, there are certain aspects of it that the Council needs to speak to you about.?

The man nodded, shooting a glare at the apprentice as he followed Qui-Gon out of the hanger. ?Of course. I am always glad to help.?

Obi-Wan had yet to find out what had taken place during that Council meeting. His master had mentioned something about ?aggressive negotiations?, but that was it.

Obi-Wan had the sneaking suspicion Qui-Gon was turning his curiosity into either another lesson, or a punishment.

The Council, thankfully, had officially forgiven him for the trouble he caused. After all, they couldn?t punish him for being polite.

However, none of this would have happened if he hadn?t taken the slight detour to Podar, a fact his Master wouldn't let him forget.

He had been surprised at first when the Council had given them time off for a retreat. Now, after considering it, he was sure this vacation was going to be his punishment. His master was most likely planning the many torturous exercises he could put his Padawan through.

Qui-Gon glanced over his shoulder at Obi-Wan, raising an eyebrow. ?You have no idea, Padawan.?

Poor Obi-Wan, with the droids prtecting him I imagine he doesn't get much done and now there's a misunderstanding with the Governor... I do wonder what those agressive negotiations were as well.
