DISCLAIMER: George-- I love the SW Galaxy. This story is my characters in your world. Please let them live.

    Chapter 1

A dark, hot jungle, filled with sounds of the surrounding animals. So much life. So much death. A complete life cycle existing in one small, section of the vast jungle. Oblivious to the rest of the world, even to the rest of the galaxy. The galaxies tragedies and its hopes; to this jungle it is alien. Outside the borders of it, it is indifferent.

But even here, on this remote planet on the outer rim of the galaxy, the disturbance of the force ripped thru the jungle. Something terrible had happened, and now the jungle was aware of it too. The screams of lost life echoed against the trees, thru the roots, the reptiles and the mammals alike. Suddenly the jungle was deathly quiet. In respect for the lost perhaps, or waiting for an aftershock that would explain the invasion of its privacy. In the midst of the shadow and light stood a lone man, wrapped in a cloak. Still and silent, his head looked toward the sky. A voice pierced the solitude.

"Master Ferio," the voice said. "There's something wrong"

The lone figure fell to one knee. He struggled for breath to respond. "Yes...? he struggled for a breath holding his communicator close to his mouth. "Yes, I have felt it as well, my padawan. I am returning" Ferio stood back up, looked around as if to regain his bearings and broke thru the jungle at a furious pace. As he ran he pushed outward with the force to direct poisonous snakes out of his way, sent the carnivores after false scents, and forced the roots under ground. A path was created before the master of the force, as if to assist him to his goal.

Three hundred yards away, Ferio could hear the engines of his starship firing. It was a good thing to have an apprentice so attuned to his thinking. He didn?t have to even communicate to him the urgency to leave the planet in search of an answer to this tremor, if it could be understated as such, in the force. Never before had a tremor been so powerful. He had taught his apprentice to react to the force's promptings. Soon, they would be off this planet, but then he felt warnings in the Force.

All is not what it seems. Proceed with caution. Ferio slowed to try and understand what this could mean. Ferio looked ahead of him 20 meters. Trees disintegrated and animals froze in his mind's vision. A mental radar image appeared in his mind. No seen threats. A special gift of his, the ability to see beyond what normal vision would provide any other soul. It gave him a tactical advantage, one he used often in the protection of himself and the padawan he tutored.

Every Jedi has a special talent, Ferio had told Fidus, his Jedi padawan. His padawan still had not discovered his own. He was agitated over this a first. He could read envy in his padawans eyes every time he used it. Ferio was sure, eventually that his padawan would discover it thru the force. A gift of the force to be used as a tool for the force.

In the distance he heard the engines grow louder as it neared.. Ferio stopped. He shook his head and sighed, " Fidus! What are you doing?"

The response to his query was immediate "Relax, master. You've always said I should be proactive rather than reactive." Fidus replied. Patience, he must learn patience Ferio thought to himself.

"Fidus! The cover is too thick here--" Before Ferio could finish his reply a rope ladder crashed thru the jungle cover and fell right in front of his face. Fidus's positioning was

    *******************************************

A voice of the young padawan came across the communication board on the Republic cruiser Militis. Trooper Tango listened to the voice of the young Padawan known as Fidus then looked up to his commander, who stood expressionless over the shoulder of the trooper. "We have received our orders. Masters Ferio and Fidus are to be destroyed on sight.?

The commander never questioned orders. He had been trained that way. From his formative years to now, accelerated as it was, he never disobeyed orders. Even if those orders conflicted with previous orders. Sixty six reset the rules of engagement for all clone troopers. Kill Jedi on sight. Simple orders. But the task of killing a Jedi, two in this case, is no simple task. No clone trooper really understood the abilities of the Jedi. The troopers were built with perfection in mind, and Commander Balo wondered why these powers could not have been part of the recipe that he was a product of. Deep down he admired the Jedi for this difference, but years of training inhibited dereliction of duty, whether he agreed with it or not. Too bad, he had liked and admired these two, but friendship was not part of his training. For some reason this bothered him, and he thought that perhaps he was part of a bad batch.

"Do not respond to the calls. Position the ship behind the 4th moon in the system. That was the last communication we had with the Osprey, so that is where they will look for us first. When they come out of hyperspace, I want to be hidden until they get in weapons range. At that time we will engage them. We can not afford to fight these Jedi without an element of surprise."

The executive office nodded, "Yes, commander"

    ***********************************

The Osprey shook as it came out of hyperspace. Her sleek body shined as it pulled into orbit around Janis, the fourth moon of the planet Kolan, the namesake of the system. "Well,? Fidus commented "Militis is gone. What now?" Fidus turned towards the Jedi Master, whose eyes were closed. Ferio gave into the force. His vision searched for any sign that would inform him of the fate of the Militis. No debris, no biological matter. It hadn?t been destroyed. It was here somewhere. Suddenly, he could feel the telltale presence of the clones. Yes, they were here, somewhere. Confidence and determination filtered into his probe. No malice, only one sole motivation. "They are here, but they are hiding. From what--?" Ferio had then realized the danger the force warned of. ?Fidus plot a course and lets get out of here, NOW!"

The words barely had escaped his lips when Ferio realized that Fidus was already hitting buttons. "Master, what?s going on?" Fidus asked as he plotted a course back to the very system they came from." They have a destroy order and we are their target" Ferio responded as he dialed buttons that brought his tactical display up, which showed the muddy moon by the name of Janis. A scan produced the data he expected as a holograph of the Militis appeared. There it sat behind the planet, a familiar shape that was now the unwitting enemy of the two Jedi.

Fidus just stared at the holograph as his fingers did their own work. Were Ferio any other man, the idea that these friends were now foes would have been absurd. The faith Fidus had in this man obliterated any doubt that Ferio's statement was anything but true.

Something terrible has happened and it just got worse.

Now it was just a matter of waiting for the slow nav computer on the Osprey to finish its calculations so they could make a safe exit. Each second seemed like an eternity. The two Jedi watched the Militis as it accelerated from its spot behind the planet on the holo display.

A sudden jerk threw Fidus against his control dash. The Osprey shook under the attack and the cockpit flooded with alarms. Ferio threw the Osprey into evasive spins. Where the Osprey was slow, it more than made up in maneuverability. Along with the Osprey, Ferio relied on the force to evade the blaster bolts coming in.

    "Fidus!!" Ferio started.

"Master! It was supposed to work!" Fidus replied, sliding this time under the console, because the ship was fully verticle and diving at a high velocity. Ferio struggled with the controls on the Osprey but without power it was useless. Ferio closed his eyes once more and such was his strength in the force that he slowed it a bit, Fidus would have to at the very least resupply power or Ferio's long life and Fidus's short life would come to an end. The last of the clouds whipped away and the bright blue sky contrasted against the rust colored surface of Janus, a desert planet. The surface below became more detailed as they free fell. The fighters had reacquired their target and with controlled speed followed the dive.

With a burst of electricity that flared from below the console and a slight yelp from Fidus the power kicked back into the Osprey. Her engines screamed back to life and Ferio began to pull her out of the dive as green bolts once again filled the void left seconds ago by the two Jedi. Manuverability versus speed delivered another chance to the Jedi side as the fighters continued in the dive as the Osprey was once again level and gaining distance once more.

The fighters pulled back thru and entered once again in a chase for their quarry.

"Fidus! Anytime would be good. I dont think we have anymore tricks left!" Ferio said through his clenched teeth. No response came from the console area but by the continuing kicking of Fidus's feet and the grunts and groans emminating he knew Fidus was working on it.

"Master, I need some time! Just a few more minutes! " Fidus finally said, continuing to throw burnt wire from his hole.

" This is a desert planet!! Its flat and featureless!" Ferio replied with some sarcasm "Ahh."

Ahead, a small split in the land opened into a canyon below. At first what seemed to be a small canyon became a deep canyon. Arches formed thru the canyon where ancient waters had washed away it's centers long ago.

"Something has developed." Ferio said with humor. He brought the Osprey into the canyon walls.

The fighters followed shooting blasts of green bolts that slammed into the canyon wall and past the Osprey. A large cloud of red dust formed from the blasts and enveloped the Osprey. Taking cue from this discovery, Ferio fired glancing shots at the walls, which as a result kicked up red dust behind him. The intended effect on the fighters behind him worked as it hid the Osprey from the attackers for moments at a time, enough for them not to be able to get an accurate shot at him. Then, ahead there it was. To his right, a lone arch in the canyon, the left leg of the arch was in the center. Applying his strategy, he fired on the canyon walls and the floor. This kicked up a very large red cloud, even enough that it hid the arch from himself.

Ferio gave into the force and yanked the Osprey hard left, scraping the belly of the Osprey against the left leg, but clearing it. Fidus groaned his disapproval as he was sent spinning yanking some of the wires apart that he had just wrapped together. A green indicator flashed showing that the nav computer was once again functional. Fidus snickered at this and started to climb out.

Ferio felt the explosion behind him and glanced at his console to see that it had eliminated one of the two attackers against the hidden arch leg.

"Please be gentle master" Ferio heard from under the console. The request could not be granted unfortunatley because upon following the winding canyon Ferio approached an end of the canyon. It ended so quickly that he was not sure if they'd make it thru. He pulled hard on the wheel and as they cleared the upper part of the canyon wall it appeared as a red cloud with a silver bullet launching out.Fidus slid out and grasped onto his chair. The following fighter was unable to compensate and slammed into the canyon wall. Ferio wiped his hand against his brow and turned to a smiling Fidus. He stood over a lighted nav computer and hyperdrive console. Ferio responded with some
