So as long as this thread is upped I think its worth telling you that I've been working on a Hatverse novel. I'm about 25,000 words in. As a sneak peak, I present to you in its entirety, chapter 4.


Chapter 4
“What’s going on? How did we get here?” Maia exclaimed.
She had found herself suddenly on a secluded beach, entirely alone except for the woman at whom she was currently yelling.
“I don’t know,” her companion Sofia whispered, finding herself as confused as Maia.
Sofia looked around at her surroundings, which were unremarkable in every respect. A pristine white sand beach, palm trees waving in the wind, and a gentle blue ocean extending empty as far as the eye could see. The only things of import in the entire scene were herself and Maia, and their arrival here seemed like a complete non sequitur.
As Sofia was surveying her surroundings, Maia was herself arriving at similar dead end conclusions. She let out an exasperated sigh.
“Why would two women just randomly find themselves on an island, this makes no sense,” Maia said, staring out at the waves.
“Oh no, I think I know what’s going on,” Sofia realized in a panic.
At this remark Maia turned from the sea and back to her companion, “What? What is it?!”
“The Bechdel Test,” Sofia whispered.
“That’s ridiculous, what could this possibly have to do with feminist literary critique?”
“There are no women in the rest of this story! The author clearly added us, alone, with nothing to talk about but our predicament… it’s all to pass the test!”
Realization began to dawn on Maia’s face, there was no better explanation. Without this reasoning they wouldn’t fit into the story at all. She struggled for a few moments, pacing as rage began to build within her over this complete subversion of a valid criticism of misogynistic story telling. Abruptly she stopped, her back straightened, an expression of horror spread across her features.
“The author is male”
“I suppose he is,” Sofia responded, “he’d have to be to try something so stupid”
“No don’t you see! If the author is male, then we’re talking about a man!”
Sofia’s face immediately reflected an identical horror to Maia’s as the implications of the discovery became apparent.
“If the story is failing the Bechdel Test then we have no reason for be-“
