So we got a piece of mail today from the person who lived in my apartment prior, and it was a card. A heavily decorated card as could be seen from within the envelope (as it's illegal to open up someone else's mail, of course I did not open it). I was curious, what would other people do in this situation - would you take the money from the card and forget about it, would you not open the card, would you return it to the post office?

It then occurred to me that stealing from birthday cards is the only way to be a villain in our modern society and that's pathetic. We need a fundraiser or campaign. An organization.

Write "Addresse unknown. Please return to sender" on it and stick it back in the mailbox.

Then it'll get stolen by the mail carrier or a sorter at the post office.

Yes, it's guaranteed. No one ever gets mail back.

I say don't send it back because a disgruntled ex-postal worker is just going to shoot up the place anyway. Or the mail truck will crash and burst into flames.

Something I've actually done when I received a card for somebody else in the mail. Stick it in an envelope and send it back to the return address with a little note saying that person doesn't live there. Anything else, bills, letters, etc, I'll send back to the post office, but for cards, I'll do a little extra.

Most apartment complexes ask that you give them your new address for your security deposit to be mailed to. I would check with them to see if they have the former residences new address, and if you cannot see it getting to the right person then just throw it away.

You guys are missing the point, she's lamenting the lack of villainous things she can do with the card.

Mail a response to the sender pretending to be the intended recipient along the lines of, "I got your card... F U!"

Not necessarily. I sent a package via USPS to Spain and two months later it came back. Person had moved so after getting new address, I shipped it off again.

    So send it back SLG.

There is no potential villainy here. If you keep the money all you are doing is using it for what it was going to be used for in the first place, spending it. This adds to the economy. Also, when said person never recieves it the sender will inquire and find out, and then they will replace the card and money thereby doubling up on money that will be put in the economy.

A few years ago some kids in my street stole some envelopes from my mailbox which contained cards and money for my kids from their grandparents. Twelve months or so later one of those kids was killed in a car accident. Send the card back.

    Correlation proves causation.

This is why I always forward chain mail.

This very scenario happened to me just today; I received what appeared to be a party invitation in my mailbox, but it was addressed to no one I've ever heard of. I gave it back to the postal worker.

I suppose that's not really the very same scenario, as the envelope I received most certainly contained no money.

I think it should be clear as to what I already did with the card in the OP. I just wanted to see what others would do.
