Mon Mothma bit back a retort. It wouldn?t do her any good to try and defend herself now. If her suspicions were correct, Palpatine wouldn?t listen and she may very well jeopardize her mission to expose him.

?I understand,? she said simply.

?Good,? Palpatine leered, finally rising to his feet. ?You are now barred from the Senate until my investigation is complete.?

Mon Mothma nodded. ?If I may, I?d like to inform my staff and collect my personal belongings from my office.?

?I?m sorry, Mon Mothma,? Palpatine sighed, ?Given the circumstances of your,? he paused, a sadistic gleam of delight in his eyes, ?stepping down, it would be in your best interest to leave the Senate immediately. I will have your secretary deliver your personal items.? He placed his arm on her shoulders, pressing her towards the door.

Wow. He's sounding an awful lot like Sidious there!

I can't wait to see Mon Mothma side with the Jedi and put him in his place

Mon Mothma stood in the shadows of the massive buildings on the busy Courscant street calmly searching the crowds. She smiled slightly as she spotted her target heading into his favorite eatery.

?Right on schedule,? she whispered, casting a quick backward glance at her Jedi protectors.

Obi-Wan and Anakin nodded simultaneously.

?Good,? Obi-Wan replied. ?Anakin will follow you inside while I keep watch out here.?

Mon Mothma inhaled deeply. ?This is it,? she thought as she began to walk towards the restaurant.

She stepped inside, pausing momentarily as her eyes adjusted to the dimness. She found Senator Paseel Argente sitting on the last stool in front of the counter intently studying the menu. She waited until he had placed his order before taking the seat next to him.

?Senator Argente,? she greeted softly.

Paseel gapped at her in shock. ?Sen..Mon Mothma,? he acknowledged gruffly, glancing quickly around the crowds to make sure they were not being observered. ?What are you doing here??

?I wanted to talk with you,? she replied evenly, waving away an approaching waitress.

?Really?? Paseel snorted. ?Last I heard you were removed from your duties?,?

?I stepped down temporarily,? she corrected.

?Only to spare yourself the disgrace of being forcibly removed,? he spat. ?Everyone knows you violated the Senate?s rules to suit your own selfish purposes,? he glowered at her. ?What could you possibly have to say to me??

Mon Mothma turned to face him. ?I had my reasons,? she began. ?And that is what I need to speak with you about.?

?You want me to do your spying now?? he hissed. ?Forget it.?

?No,? Mon Mothma replied, biting back her disgust as she placed her hand over his. ?I?d like you to help me remove Palpatine from office.?

?What?? Paseel balked. ?Why would I want to do that? The Chancellor has done an exceptional job under the most trying of circumstances. He is just what the Republic needs.?

?But at what cost?? Mon Mothma gazed steadily into his disbelieving eyes. ?The Chancellor isn?t as young as he used to be?,?

?No of us are,? Paseel sniffed. ?Not even you. What?s that got to do with anything??

?His regular duties combined with the war and the trauma of his recent kidnapping has taken a toll,? Mon Mothma continued squeezing his hand. ?I believe the stress is too much for his health and it would be in his best interest if he were no longer Chancellor.?

Paseel blinked incredulity at her. ?I?m supposed to believe you have his best interests at heart??

?His and the Republic?s,? Mon Mothma answered honestly.

Paseel grunted. It would obviously take much more to convince him.

?Ask yourself if it is fair of us to ask so much of him,? Mon Mothma sighed. ?You know as well as I do the Chancellor is more devoted to his duty than himself.?

?And for that you would humiliate him with a trumped up corruption accusation?? Paseel glared at her.

?Of course not,? Mon Mothma replied. ?A vote of no confidence in the Senate backed up by your colleagues would settle the matter.?

Paseel?s eyes narrowed into thin slits. ?And you have someone in mind to replace him??

?Possibly,? she shrugged.

?I thought so,? Paseel sneered.

?Not necessarily me,? Mon Mothma quickly added. ?Just someone?,? her words trailed off as Paseel?s food was set before him. ?More capable of handling the added challenges the Chancellor now has to face.?

Paseel was silent.

?Perhaps you?d like to speak to some of your colleagues,? Mon Mothma suggested patting his hand.

He looked up at her, an evil gleam in his eye. ?That I will do,? he vowed.

Following his meeting with Mon Mothma, Paseel made his way quickly to Chancellor Palpatine?s office, completely unaware of the cloaked figure following him.

?Chancellor, I have some news,? he announced eagerly as he was escorted in. ?Mon Mothma has asked me to propose a vote of no confidence against you.?

"If all went well..." sigh...as soon as these words are included you KNOW all is NOT going to go well. Padme, Padme, Padme...when will you EVER listen?? And everyone thinks ANAKIN is the stubborn one! Ha!

So, the wheels are turning on the Jedi plot. I hope they know what they are doing. I'd hate for Mon Mothma to be caught in the middle.

Guess it's time to drag out the old 'worry meter.' Yep, looks like it's pointing directly towards "buckle up and hold onto your hats." Seems like good advice to me!

?What does that fool want now?? Palpatine spat in disgust. ?Very well,? he sighed. ?Delay the start of the session. I will be back as soon as possible.? Turning on his heel, he stalked back to his office.

Uh oh. Terribly evil cliffie!

 

Oh dear, that was an evil cliffie, I hope that Padmé will have time to get out or hide before Palpatine gets there. Another fantastic update.

She bit back the guilt she felt as she remembered her promise to Anakin to stay home that day. As much as she hated breaking the promise, the morning?s Senate session provided the perfect opportunity for her to retrieve her data pad once and for all.

If all went well, she would have her data pad and be back home without Anakin or anyone else every knowing she was here. She exhaled quietly as Palpatine?s receptionist glanced quickly up and down the corridors before heading to the cafeteria. ?Finally,? she smiled triumphantly, slipping unseen into Palpatine?s office.
