Obi-Wan Kenobi apprentice to the great Qui-Gon realized he had made a fatal error when he walked out from a nestling of trees into open land. He was within a mile of the ocean shore; the entrance to the Gunguns home world deep in the ocean?s floor. There before him amassed , lined, armed and waiting stood at least fifty battle droids with blasters all aimed at the young Jedi.

Well it might be considered a small group, but only if I had about a dozen perfected Jedi with me. There was no place to go. As he turned to attempt escape, he saw he was flanked with droids. Encircled really, with no place to go, no place to seek shelter , and certainly his abilities did not include the ability to battle so many though though he readied himself to do just that.

Obi-Wan?s last thoughts were of his master. He reached out along their bond to make a connection with his master only to be rebuffed. His mental thoughts bounced right back at him. With dread, he realized his master had closed himself off to him. Even as he succumbed to unconsciousness from the wound to his head, just over his left eye; a result of a blaster shot he could not successfully avoid, his worry remained for his master and his ability to battle so many .

I have failed and in my failure, I have brought more complications for my master to deal with. He needed the Gungans. Forgive me Master for I have failed you Blackness befell the young Jedi out just a mile from his destination,; a mile was the difference in his failure or success and for what? Only for his master did the young apprentice struggle to complete what he needed to do..

Had the regal and majestically looking Master Jinn not been so obstinate, so very stubborn, maybe even somewhat vindictive, and allowed his link with Obi-Wan to remain opened he would have known the very second his apprentice faced the onslaught of more than fifty battle droids.

Qui-Gon was all of the three, obstinate, stubborn, vindictive and if Mace, his best friend was around, he would have thrown in pigheadedness.

Obi-Wan?s master was oblivious to the fact that his apprentice went up against a garrison of the Queen?s enemies in the fight he could in no way win.

?Master Qui-Gon sir, if Obi-Wan makes it to the Gungans aquatic world, how long should it take him to return with Boss Noss and his army??

Was Ani concerned for Obi-Wan, was it the Queen?s meek little army that worried him, or did Ani, as usual have an agenda more personal that required that one question answered?

Master Jinn let the frown of concern on his face for his apprentice relent to a broad smile as he turned and faced his future prodigy.

?To begin with, if you expect to become a padawan in the Jedi order, you will have to learn there are a few things never said. One is that you don?t start a sentence with *if.* Assume young lad, that Obi-Wan did complete his mission. Now we wait on his return.?

Ani beamed a smile across the pilot?s cabin .

?Oh alright. And you said there are other things I should never say. What are they??

Jinn at the moment had not intended to get sidetracked with the boy. While he thought of the possible war ahead of them, he refused to open his bond to Obi-Wan, and now was not the time to discuss rules of the Jedi with Anakin, either.. However Master Jinn did not want to hurt Anakin?s feelings. So he settled himself in a chair right next to the little former desert slave.

?Well something your future grandmaster will tell you is ? never try, only do?. I don?t know how many times he has told Obi-Wan that. See, you and he are Yoda?s grand padawans because he was my master.?

Jinn forgot for a moment the horrors of a pending war as he remembered back to when Obi-Wan was just about the age of Anakin. He too was an inquisitive bug back then. Obi has always been Yoda?s favorite. I think he would have been even if he wasn?t my apprentice.

It was as if Ani knew Jinn was thinking of Obi, or that he knew Jinn thoughts were of how Yoda cared so much for Obi.

Did you just get Obi shot in the face? Not the face! anywhere else.

Qui-Gon needs something that?s for sure. Nothing like a little blind obsession to get the blood boiling.

?Master Jinn?.Master? I am indeed sorry to interrupt your thoughts but this can?t wait?.

?What ?? Oh sorry ?Yes what is it Captain Panaka??

?I have just received a communiqué that is both encouraging, yet distressing as well.?

The captain of the queen?s army had managed to sneak up on the Jedi, without Jinn ever knowing he was behind him. Seldom had that happened that Jinn was so focused on something other than the ?here and now? that he let someone get in such close range of him and not be beware of his close proximity , friend or foe.

?How can that be? Both distressing and good??

?The Gungans have agreed to help us battle the droid army. However??

    Qui-Gon interrupted the captain.

?Good, they are on their way here??

?Yes but?? Qui-Gon would not let the captain finish before he interrupted him again.

?Qui-Gon looked over at Ani with a satisfied smile on his face. The Queen saw the satisfied smirk on his face as he stared at his future apprentice. However, the ever observant Queen noticed something else; a look of relief peppered in that smug look from being right on his assumption that his apprentice was more than capable to carry out his mission alone.. That look and air of confidence would very soon fade into the nothingness.

?See Anakin, my Queen, I told you Obi-Wan would be successful on his mission. He has already reached the Gungans and they are now on return trek as we speak.?

Jinn smiled and it stayed there on his face for only minutes until Panaka delivered the rest of his news. The worst par was yet to come.

?I?m sorry Master Jedi. The Gungans did not come because of your padawan. I spoke with Boss Noss and explained the situation to him. It was only then he decided to join forces with us, to protect our joint interest, Naboo.?

?Oh, you mean they wanted to confirm the message my apprentice delivered them??

Panaka looked extremely nervous. He acted that way as well as he shuffled his feet and darted his eyes first to the Queen, then Ani , before finally settled his worried stare on the Jedi master again.

?No sire, I don?t mean that. Your apprentice, Obi-Wan never reached the Gungans home world, under the ocean. They have seen nothing above ground, except several battle droid patrols. That is why they contacted us. They suspected something serious was about to go down on our planet.?

Had the shocking news not been so distressing, Queen Amidala would have thought the look of complete shock on the Jedi master?s face was *priceless*. Her concern and fear for Obi-Wan overrode her thoughts. She was just as shocked by the words of her captain and possibly even more shocked by the Jedi master?s rationale of the situation.

    ?Well then that explains it.?

Jinn finally managed to say *something* . To him, it was coherent reasoning, but the Queen and even the others around Jinn were not sure what he said made sense.

Qui-Gon resembled a man trapped in some horrible nightmare. He searched through what Panaka said to glean something good out of the news just delivered him. He certainly did not want the others to know of this true concern; his fear that in someway his apprentice had been overtaken by the droids; left dead or held captive.

?Just what about this news *explains* it all Master Jinn? I fail to see any *explanation* out of this at all. Certainly nothing that would explain why your padawan did not reach his destination.?

The Queen was growing angry and that made Ani as angry as she was, only for a different reason. He could not for the life of him, understand why all this concern was for a padawan who very shortly, more than likely would be placed out of the Jedi anyway. However, he knew not to say anything even remotely like that in front of the Queen or his future master. He could feel the turmoil that rolled from Qui-Gon. Anakin Skywalker did not understand the force, so in turn did not to understand what he was feeling through it.

Jinn straightened his stature and turned away from Ami. He didn?t want her to see his facial exp

Master Jinn felt a little reassured of his capabilities when he saw to it the Queen reached the castle in one piece. She graciously showed Master Jinn, his and Anakins? room and excused herself.

She had never in her entire life told someone off so soundly as she had the great Jedi, never. She was a little overwhelmed by her actions and sad for the Jedi apprentice who may have lost his life. Drained of all energy mental and physical, all she wanted to do right now was rest her body and calm her racing mind.

No matter how much I try to convince Master Jinn he can not use me to place blame, I know deep down it *is* my fault. Obi-Wan was here to guard me, see to my safety. However, he had no one to see to his. In that Master Jinn can be blamed . Now, he fears to leave me to even make some kind of an attempt to find his apprentice alive or dead.

The only comfort she took in all this was that Anakin Skywalker was safe in her home along with her.. She felt deep down one day their destinies would collide and not in a bad way. Yes, she was very glad Ani survived but that did not keep her from knowing the agenda on the boy?s mind, himself.

Poor Ani, he has been a slave all his life. I suppose I can?t really blame him for thinking always of himself and his future. I don?t? think he ever liked Obi-Wan what little time he new him. He thought of him as a rival and not a fellow comrade.

Anakin went to his and Master Jinn?s quarters without a peep of an argument. Even Master Jinn wished he could have sought rest or at least a few extra moments of meditation. He too found the day?s events more strenuous than he first anticipated..

Something told him Obi-Wan was not dead. He believed with the bond closed he would have still felt a powerful force charged notice of his apprentice force signature fading had that been the case.

I have to believe he is alive and I would like to search for him. However, my first duty is to the queen and then to my ward, Ani.

Master Jinn was just about to go find Captain Panaka, ask him to oversee to the Queen personally, and allow Jinn two escorts to search for his apprentice. He did not have to search for the captain, he entered the room just as Qui-Gon was about to leave.

?Oh I was about to come to you. I would request two of your men to search for my apprentice and also ask you to personally see to??

    Panaka held his hand up.

?I?m afraid I can?t allow you Master Jinn. I have had two reports from our men scouting outside. Both confirm that the deviled tattooed sith you fought with in the desert is here. Came in on a speeder and is roaming the city in search of you. He knows now we came here. He is being tracked as we speak and is on his way. We must make ready for him and an army of battle droids, evidently under his direction. The Neimoidians will not show their cowardly faces in this battle."

Qui-Gon?s worries shifted from his apprentice to the one the Jedi sent here to guard, the Queen.

?How long do we have before they reach us, Captain??

?At best a half hour, but my true guess would be no more than twenty minutes.?

?And you say they are coming from the north. Most likely the northern hemisphere of the planet is where most of their ships docked when they arrived. Yes, have every available pilot you have join forces. Tell them to get their ships in the air with their radar shields up.?

?But Master, you can?t mean?.. It is impossible, totally out of the question. I can?t and won?t put my men in such possible peril. They can?t pilot witho the cloaking device on until the reach at least twenty-five thousand feet. If they do, they might wind up running into each other with so many being launched from this one little space port, not in control of the battle droids."

?I know very well how to pilot and the consequences of keeping you radar cloaking on. NOW. DO. AS. I. SAY.!!.

Jinn realized he was the one who had raised his voice to a shout this time. He toned his voice down., softened it, even tried to soun

It?s Getting Darker in here. Qui should just turn Ani over to Maul. [face_devil] I like that Maul?s still around to cause trouble. Obi is braidless a little earlier than Qui planned and with the Sith! Lots of trouble can come from that.

    Great teaser about Xan. He may be angelic but this could bring the dark back out in him. The good side of dark that is, it is a fine line. 8-}
