Wizards & some warlocks/witches require something to channel their magic don't they (always depicted with a wand or staff in order to do magic)?
That doesn't make them very powerful if they depend on an object, do fairies need that or are they just naturally capable of doing magic?

Witches seem to vary in power, some only use potions and incantations while others seem to be able to use powerful magic

Faeries. I recently interviewed a well published author for pagan media. He's charasmatic and super cute (queer, bummer for us ladies) When he teaches about the fae, who he refers to as The Mighty Dead, or Ancestors, he paints them with some real badassery.
