I just thought of how the exchange between Yoda & Sidious in ROTS parrallels the exchange between Sidious & Luke in ROTJ and shows the reversal in roles of the Jedi & Sith in the 2 trilogies of the saga:

sidious: "your arrogance blinds you, master yoda"

yoda: "faith in your new apprentice, misplaced may be"

luke: "your overconfidence is your weakness"

sidious: "your faith in your friends is yours"

In the OT, the sith are accused of overconfidence whilst apparently luke has too much faith in his friends, however in the PT, sidious accused yoda of being too confident & yoda believed sidious had too much faith in his "friend" -vader!

You didn't see this connection until now? Luke's Ep6 comment was the first thing I thought of when Sidious said this.

I'm not sure if I fully see the significance of the use of "friend".
But overconfidence did indeed play a big part in both the Jedi's fall (Ep3) and the Sith's fall.

You'll notice that the "subjects" raised by the two responses are "concluded" within moments of each other in Return of The Jedi.

"Faith in your new apprentice, misplaced maybe"
    - Proven right when Anakin returns within Vader, and kills Sidious.

"Your faith in your friends in yours"
    - Proven wrong when, moments after Sidious's demise, the second Deathstar is destroyed by Lando and the Rebels.

I wonder if this was done on purpose.

    There's always motifs.

Palpatine has faith that Anakin will succeed in bringing order to the galaxy, by taking it into darkness.
Luke has faith that his father and the Rebellion will bring it back into the light.

I like the motif and it's really something I never paid attention to until now.

I must admit that I never realized that conection until now... [face_blush]
and I guess it GL did it on purpose, it's another message or teaching, within his whole "good vs. evil" idea: Friendship is good, overconfidence/arrogance is bad

I always saw the connection with arrogance and overconfidence, but I never spotted the one with friends and apprentice. Great catch, Wolvo! :)

    The apprentice is the friends
