I'd find this a lot more compelling if the show didn't invent random plotlines that lead to nowhere just to pad out seasons (and that's not even including the porn obsession).

The showrunners have absolutely no high ground when it comes to this, and even GRRM's discourses on food and random Meereenese politics are still more interesting than the plotlines the show comes up with. If it weren't for the high production value of their sets and costuming and the general high quality acting, the show wouldn't be worth watching.

Luckily for them, they have that going for them.

It's true, but white-washing Tyrion makes more sense in context if he's going to be one of the last three standing, as well as potentially ACTUALLY end up with Sansa.

A lot of the other crap plot lines don't make sense though... :p

I agree with that. Showing Littlefinger monologuing in his brothel instead of showing the Tower of Joy irked me in season one.

But having Varys with Tyrion is a good one and should be interesting. I don't care for the Iron Born so cut them all I don't mind. Meereen, I hate Meereen so I could do without all of that. Dorne? Don't really care except for Doran.

I just think George expanded too much and is now in trouble. Too many characters with too many terrible nicknames that don't really matter and aren't worth remembering to be honest.

2 books to wrap it all up. There's no way that that will be enough time unless each book is 2000+ pages or something.

Or the next to last book is just a giant blood bath and the last book is all epilogue

Just looking through the new stills for season 5. One has Davos at Castle Black with Stannis and Jon. So no White Harbor and search for Rickon? Would anyone be surprised if they abandoned the Great Northern Conspiracy as well?

I'd say say. I'd bet the war in the north is just Bolton forces vs Stannis forces.

Honestly I wonder what the show would be like if they new the ending from the beginning. How many characters wouldn't be on the show from the start. I'm guessing there would be no Greyjoys and Ironborn, no Rickon, no Freys, no Brotherhood Without Banners. Guessing everyone would be merged into 'important' characters or just cut completely.

The brotherhood certainly seems like an immense waste of time at this point. Could have just started the Arya-Hound roadtrip a few episodes earlier.

Can't drop the Greyjoys completely, though, how could you pass up the chance at Theon torture-porn? Have to wonder how or if Ahsa/Yara and the rest will ever show up again, or if they'll just drop that completely. Maybe their fear of dogs will lead them to never leave the Iron Islands again.

    What's the Spoiler Policy here?
I've read up to Storm of Swords part One. and Season 4 of the shop.

This particular thread is open season for anything up to ADWD. Future book spoilers must be flagged and use the spoiler tag.

Ah okay so I shouldn't come here if I don't want spoilers!. I'm of two minds:
Blaze through the remaining books and discuss it
or wait patiently and read through them savouring them making it last a few months.

I agree with you. I might join the big ASOIAF forums and do the still reading.
    What about the show?
Do I read the books knowing there better than the show?
Wait for the show to catch up with the books?

How could you possibly have had the Red Wedding without the Freys? Plus, they have to do something with Theon this season. I know the show likes to cut some things, but I don't think having the Freys in Winterfell along with the Boltons is that much of a stretch.

Yup. Ideally you'd pace yourself so that TWoW comes out just as you finish Dance, but at this point, you 'do have to slow down to a word per month.

I've made a few decisions in the past few days about my own personal attitude in regards to anything ASOIAF, GoT, or Gurm-related. It's pretty clear to me we're not getting TWOW for a while, still, so I'm going to start viewing ASOIAF as a great story that ended with ASOS. AFFC and ADWD were just a neat (and very long) epilogue. If and when TWOW comes out, I'll be "pleasantly surprised."

In the meantime, after having leaned in the direction of not continuing to watch GoT, I've decided I'll actually keep watching. It's basically fan fiction now, but since when did I let that stop me from enjoying an entertaining story? Whatever Benioff and Weiss do know of ASOIAF's ultimate endings from Gurm, which is still extremely unclear to me, I'm not too concerned about being spoiled for any of it by the show. If I'm "pleasantly surprised," that is. The entire world, story, and characters of ASOIAF are about the execution of a very old, unoriginal concept- an engaging story told in a fantasy world with characters that stay with you. That's really it. We've always known George has executed that story much better than the showrunners have. The true joy in reading ASOIAF usually comes not from whatever ending a character might meet, but in reading, dissecting, and analyzing how they got there.

Just have Bolton have a daughter instead. If we see another Frey by the end of the show I'll be surprised.

No Stoneheart and no Manderly's, so without them why bring the Freys in at this point?
