I for one, really enjoyed that. Being a bit of history nerd, ages ago I looked into some medieval recipes etc, and it turns out GRRM did some pretty amazing research for most of the stuff he describes. Needles to say, I've tried out stuff from the Feast of Ice and Fire. :)

True. He has a knack for creating the atmosphere - especially nicely seen in his quote on fantasy.

But despite the excellent and detailed environments / portraits / heraldry descriptions, I'm not a huge fan of his "love scenes".

There's a great recording somewhere on Reddit where a poster read aloud the Cersei/Taena sex scene in a (meant to be) seductive voice, complete with appropriate music playing in the background.

I don't really notice when he goes on about food, but I think that's because Martin has nothing on Brian Jacques' descriptions of food...not IMO, anyway.

See, this is one of the things that bothered me about ASOIAF: for a book series that's supposed to be so medieval in its setting (down to food and clothes), a large part of the house sigils (I'd say most, but I'd have to check) don't follow the basic rules of heraldry. It may have been a conscious choice on GRRM's part, but things like a red dragon on black just feel wrong to me. :p

Ah man Brian Jacques. I used to eat up his Redwall books...until I realized they were all the same plot. But that is for a different thread of course.

True, that's the odd one. :p Heraldry essentially uses 2 "metal" colours as bases: gold and silver, and they can come in combination with any colour. Pretty much obvious if you take a look at most of real coats of arms. But according to some, the red colour can count as "copper", so another base...

so its almost like in this non-real fantasy world that's been created, their culture is, like, differnet and stuff. fascinating

Well, duh. But doesn't it strike you as odd that GRRM would put so much effort into researching actual medieval recipes and clothing - but not heraldry? And really, it's not rocket science, you have two metals (silver and gold), four basic colours (red, blue, green, black) - eight if you count rare colours like purple, orange, maroon and grey, and the basic rule that you can't have metal on metal and colour on colour - it always has to be either metal on colour or colour on metal.

Maybe Gurm did research heraldry with as great an effort as he researched recipes and clothing. Then, like Rogue, maybe he went, "who cares," especially since it's funner just to come up with awesome color combinations, anyway. Kind of like when George Lucas and Ben Burtt and all those guys were making the first Star Wars and realized there's no sound in space, I bet they did a collective, "who cares." Seriously. You sound like Ender in the Skyfall thread prattling on about unrealistic stock market scenarios in Casino Royale and TDKR, when the writers know the audience won't really give a ****, so long as they understand the point that, "oh, hey, these villainous characters are causing some stock market turbulence."

Hey, I did acknowledge that it was probably a conscious choice on GRRM's part in my first post, and would leave it at that, if it hadn't been for Rogue_Ten's patronising "ZOMG it's a fantasy, who'd have thought" post.

But yeah, whatever. It's not a big issue or anything.

For what it's worth, I found your explanation of the rules of heraldry informative and exciting, even if I said a silent thank-you to Gurm for not obeying said rules.

Given his hobby (obsession) of painting accurate medieval knight miniatures with full heraldry I'd be shocked if it wasn't conscious.
