Anakin is destined to 'Bring balance to the Force' by some old mysterious prophecy. This prophecy is a bit vague and there could be different interpretations. Most people automatically assume that 'balance' means that he will kill off Jedi until there are equal numbers of Jedi and Sith (Yoda + Ben vs Emperor + Vader) or that he will do something to cause the Light side and Dark side of the Force to hold equal power in the Galaxy.

I think there is a different way to interpret the prophecy:

Anakin Skywalker fulfills the prophecy of 'Bringing balance to the Force' by creating Luke Skywalker.

Notice that the Jedi are a very unemotional, controlled, logical, and unattached order, as AotC showed us. They are almost inhuman in how they emotionally react.
The Sith are on the opposite extreme. The Sith are fierce and full of hatred and love, very extreme emotions.

By creating Luke Skywalker, Anakin brings Balance. Luke Skywalker, at the end of ROTJ, is the last remaining Jedi. He is also very different from the Sith and from the old Jedi. He is emotionally attached to Leia and Han and loves them, while the old Jedi could not. He's also let go of his hate that he once held for Vader. Luke is capable of anger, as we saw in his duel with Vader in ROTJ, but he's also capable of keeping his anger from driving him out of control. Luke is right between the Jedi and the Sith. He's really more neutral than pure lightside Jedi.

Vader's actions fulfilled his destiny at his last moments of life. He saved Luke and destroyed the Emperor, leaving a just one single balanced 'Jedi' in the Galaxy. Luke represents balance. Anakin brought him. So he brought balance!

    Dude...[face_laugh]

Balance of the force does not mean both eqaul sides of good and evil. Balance to the force basicly mean LIFE. Life goes on the course it should. Some bad thing happened some good, like life. People die yet people are born, life goes on on.

Anakin brings the balance of the force when he Throws Palp down that shaft, DUH.

Lucas said in an interview in the 2000 released version of the original trilogy that Balance of the Force was that there is no Dark Side, there is no Sith. So when Anakin went back to the Light Side and killed the other remaining Sith (Palpatine), he brought Balance back to the Force.

If anybody wonders the importance of Luke. Luke redeemed Anakin so that Anakin would fulfill the prophecy.

i disagree, the circle of LIFE requires DEATH it is a neccary part of it. there is no life without death but i do think killing the sith brought balance because LIFE is not supposed to be just LIFE and DEATH is not supposed to be just DEATH you need a blend of the too, and without advicates of total death or total life you cannot have what life is meant to be

    Lucas has settled the issue:

Lucas: Which brings us to films 4, 5 and 6, where Anakin's offspring redeem him and allow him to fulfill the prophecy where he brings balance to the force by doing away with the Sith and getting rid of evil in the universe. LINK

At the expense of contradicting the man himself, weren't the Jedi unaware of the emergence of the Sith when Qui Gon brought Anakin before the council...He implied to the council that Anakin is the one to bring balance to the Force. But, as far as the Jedi were concerned, there were no remaining Sith at that time. So, if balancing the Force means destroying the evil Sith then in their eyes there was no need for Anakin. Or, should they have realized this was a wake up call. And since Anakin became a Sith Lord, he did not balance the Force, he further unbalanced it...until he killed Palpatine

It is possible that the Jedi didn't understand what "Balance of the Force" meant. We the audience know that, but it doesn't mean the characters (the Jedi) knew or understood what it meant.

This is the way i see it ...i've posted it on a few other threads ...and i'd like to post it here as well:
Its known that the darkside is very powerful. I think therfore ...the balance of the force has always been a bit off, probably tipping the scale in the darksides favor. But ...as long as the majority of the galaxy were controled by the good (the old Republic) ...the darkside was held in check. Enter Palpatine. With all of the power he is secretly gaining ...and the corruption he is causing ....the force is shifting to the darkside even further, and the darkside is no longer held in check. This is diminishing the jedi's ability to use the force for the sake of good. The prochecy states that someone will come along to bring balance to the force. Someone that is so powerful the darkside could again be held in check. Enter Anakin. Had Anakin lived up to his potential ...and became the powerful "jedi" he was supposed to be ..the scales would again balance out ...and good could have prevailed. Palps knows that the only people that lead a rebellion to stop him ...are the jedi. Thats why he wants them all wiped out. I think in EP3 ...once Palps recruits Anakin to his side ...he feels he is pretty much invincable. There will be no chosen one to oppose him. He will be more powerful than Yoda , Mace or any jedi. Together, with all of their power, and with the largest army...and most powerful weapons... they can wipe out the jedi, control the force and squash any rebellion. There will be nothing left to stop them. The fatal flaw in Palps plans we know...will be the twins. The inner love that seems to keep betraying Anakin ...will once again betray him as a sith ...and he will live up to his role as the chosen one...by being the only one powerful enough to come back from the darkside ...go back to the side of good..and kill Palps ...and bring balance back to the force...and....well...you all know how that story ends.

IMO, "balance" means "stability". Once the dark side is defeated, there is no more battling so everything is stable, or in balance.

It's always been my opinion as I've said on some other threads that the balancing of the force occurs when Vader kills the Emperor because it restored the balance of good and evil

Killing the Emperor played a big role in bringing balace but killing the Jedi did also. There were roughly the same number of light side and dark side users once he killed them all, but the Emperor was so powerful and used so much of the dark side that he alone could disrupt the balace, so when Vader killed him it finally brought the force back into perfect balance, even if only for a time

Idon't think that balancing the Force has to do with equal man power on both sides. Jedi are more in harmony with the Force, they do not corrupt the true nature of the Force. Dark siders corrupt the power of the Force for destructive purposes. They use the power more in great influxes of energy. The Jedi use the Force more evenly and calmly. That is why there is no need for more than 2 Sith, because they use the Force in greater abundance than the Jedi.

Back to the Anakin thing, the Council probably rebuked Qui-gon's request to train Anakin, because they felt that they did not need to balance the Force. After Darth Maul was revealed and then Qui-Gon was subsequently killed, that is when they agreed to train Anakin, for if he was the "Chosen One" he could balance the Force, now that the Sith had made their presence known.

Love these boards btw, very kewl....
