It's news that he did War Horse and Tin Tin and Lincoln since like 2010?
I would be fine with either John or Michael.
"He has been a great inspiration to me over the years," he continued. "He has been a great teacher to me and good friend and I would love nothing more than to hear more of his music from that universe."
"If it were up to me I would say 'John, you must do it.'"
Does this mean Giachinno would turn down the job if Williams offered to do it?
If so, then this is honestly the best news I've heard since October.
There is already a thread for this:
A Whole New World: Episode VII [News and Speculation]
I think John has been "semi-retired" for the last 10 years or so, in that he only scores films for his longtime collaborators. I believe that every film he's scored since Harry Potter & POA has been for either a Lucas or Spielberg project.
I still think any of a number of people who helped score The Old Republic would work well for a new film...several of them have a very Williams-esque style.
Now my helpful redirect post looks weird...
It's exceedingly likely that Williams is going to be scoring:
Abrams wants him back
It's almost melancholy that it's rather likely these might be his final scores...
At least he'd be going out with a bang.
Beats Jurassic Park IV I suppose.
Although just wait: Williams is going to live another couple of decades and Lucas and co. will be back at his doorstep. "Hey -- hey John? Ya'know how we said there absolutely wouldn't be any episodes 10-12? Well, we've been rethinking it and...."
Still kind of waiting for it to be official.
unfortunately i doubt we'll get anything official until probably next year, but a boy can dream.
Yeah, Williams (IIRC) doesn't start working on a movie until after filming is complete, so I'd imagine late next year.
That really impresses me. He pounds out two hours of good to great music in a couple of months before a release.
He's one of the few who can pull that off. Most composers can't.
He wouldn't start scoring it until then, but the deal might be inked well before then...
True, I hadn't thought about that.
I wonder how rigid Disney/Abrams is going to be about things leaking...if Cloverfield, Super Eight, and Star Trek (both of them now) are any indicator, we're not going to know squat about episode 7 until we're watching it
Right. I think Lucasfilm and Disney will be very closed off about things leaking. But I also think they will keep Star Wars interest alive by announcing things, like they have with this announcement that Star Wars is returning to England for shooting.
We won't get confirmation until late 2014 at the earliest, and certainly not this year. The man's in his 80s, you're not going to announce him for a project two years in advance... not to be morbid, but who knows what could happen?
Having said that, John Williams is by far the person I want working on these films the most. The man is my idol and when my small class at university received a hand-written letter off him (which I have framed), it was one of the highlights of my academic life!
One way to solidify fan support for the sequel trilogy would be to make Jar Jar Binks the Chancellor of the New Republic. It would tie in nicely with the prequel trilogy and immediately give us all a familiar character we can get behind. It would make everyone happy.
And was that an Ep 7 forum troll?
