To me, a good costumer is one who still stay relatively humble over his/her costume/armor no matter how accurate it is and able to point out their own flaw with it. A bit of arrogant is okay after those months and years of search for The One but too much should get him/her hung from his/her toe.

    Just my 0.02."

Thanks Darth. You'er right on. Real costumers are humble about their stuff. Yeah I work real hard at it but I know were my tunic has flaws andd that's ok. It just makes the garment more realistic.

Not a problem Recce, and no offense is taken. I like a functional costume too. I have my Jedi pouches form leather and functional so I can keep my money and stuff in them.

I wore my Imperial Uniform to school a couple times, but most people were easy going about it. A few people thought it was a Star Trek uniform (may they roast somewhere warm :p), and the teachers were scared because I had a calculator in my holster (seemed a convenient place to put it), but other than that, nothing serious. Then again, my friend Katie had this insatiable urge to try scratching the rank squares off my badge.

Hello all. I've been a cosplayer for about 3-4 years and have met with insults and abuse from the very beginning. I'm also a 501st member.

I also like keeping my costumes functional. Even though my stormtrooper limits my vision, I've trained myself to wear it as comfortable as it can get. It's also made from durable plastic with a matte finish. It has withstood bangs and pulls, both intentional and accidental. I feel it's a necessity when costuming. For example: I had my detonator riveted to my belt, because I've seen people steal the ones on my fellow troopers, who had fixed them with velcro.
Once, I was wearing snowtrooper armour on a convention and had my photo camera with me in one of the pouches, which had a push-button lock. I've had a bunch of kids tapping the back of my helmet, tugging the cloak and such. They kept leaving and coming back. First, I thought they were just being pests and I kept my eye on them. Then, while they were banging my helmet again, I noticed one of them was trying to sneak his hand into my pouch, to steal my camera. Good thing I had been keeping an eye on that pouch as well, for I was able to grab the kid's arm by the wrist and twist it around. The crowd around me noticed what was going on and the kid's friends vanished as fast as they could. Eventually, I had to let go of the kid (there's only so much you can do in armour) and he also split. Never seen him or his friends again.

I'd like to add that I'm from Belgium, a country where cosplaying isn't as widely spread as in the United States. It has both advantages and disadvantages. Advantages being that when you come to an event in costume, people usually gasp in awe, because impressive costumes like stormtroopers are rare.

But we also have a history situation here, which has led to stupid remarks several times over. And I was wondering if any of you heard similar stuff.
The last time I had this kind of verbal abuse was at the premiere of ROTS. Our garrison was spread across 7-8 movie theatres across the country, for four days, with me often being the sole guy manning the one in my neighbourhood. When I was by myself, I'd simply play statue: standing still in the middle of the lane where people entering have to pass. And then, when someone comes close to check whether you're a real guy or not, move suddenly and scare the you-know-what out of time. I've had people RUN from where I was standing, straight into the (wrong) room. I even had one girl, who fell flat on her back, which I of course then helped up again. And even that girl idn't mind the fact the she'd hurt herself due to me scaring her; she had a good laugh, all the people in the theatre had and the theatre personnel as well.
But one time, I had an older guy coming up to me (about 60+) who was starting to shout angrily, calling me a 'filthy German' and telling me to go back to 'my cage' where I belonged. He really made a big scene, but I simply continued playing statue, not moving an inch. The guy kept it up for a few minutes but then ran out of words, starting to repeat himself until someone who was apparentely accompanying him stepped in and told him to back off.

Yes, believe it or not, but I've actually experienced people calling stormtroopers Nazis in plain public, on several occasions. I've heard kids shouting Nazi slogans at Imperial officers. And I'm talking people of all kinds of ages. Obviously, their knowledge about movies is as limited as their knowledge about history. Ignoring them works best.
Our Garrison happens to be on a very friendly basis with the German one. We sometimes do events together and they're all a bunch of wonderful people. So, I find it is insulting to them as well, when an old fart like the one on the ROTS premiere starts calling all Germans filthy and pretends they're all Nazis. It was really difficult for me to keep my statue posture up that time, but I managed and I'm glad I did for it was the best solution.

That is an aweful story TK4355. I am sorry to hear that people are so ignorant. I am Jewish and can see the resemblance between the Empire and Nazis, but that has never stopped me from my dream of having my own suit of armor. I only hope that if I am ever in the same situation, I will be able to keep my composure as weel as you did. It is too bad that people aren't able to differentiate between real life and fantasy/movies.

Doesn't help that the dub of SW to German has the imperial officers speaking like Nazis. Guess it was for some cultural effect? Might cause confusion in some.

I like the scaring kids bit. See previous posts. ;)

Some characters (like Vader) didn't have have the same voice twice in any of the movies.
Aunt Beru was the other that stood out as being, well, horriblly painful. She had the German Alte Tante'. "LyUUU-OOOOKE! LyUUU-OOOOKE! Wenn dein Onkel Ubersaetzungener kaufte, errinert ihm dass es muss Botche sprechen!"
OK, my translation is probablly off. It's been 8 years since the one time I heard it.
Really, if you want, you can get a decent region-free player for ~$45, and just buy the trilogy from whatever country you want to hear the differences. I don't know if there is a single european version with multiple language options (I doubt it: each country is going to want its own taxes).

    Sorry for the detour.
    Back on topic.

I found it interesting that a bunch of ren-faire-ers were at a sci-fi convention with no problem, but got huffy when the klingons showed up at renfaire. Some of the exact same people. No, no hypocrasy or double-standard there.

Not sw, but when i was in high school, they had a wear your costume day on halloween. i wore my ninja suit i had made. you can guess how that went over. I broke one kid's finger when he tried to jerk my face wrap off by hooking the knot with his finger and pulling my head down. he was football jerk so i had problems from that for awhile. My mom was a mean subsititue teacher so i wasn't well liked at all anyway. I continued my studies in the martial arts and after i destroyed 3 of the jerks who picked on me all the time they all left me alone. to the-ramdom-menace, the reason your brother is "better at every then you", is because you place him as the standard. if you think about, i bet you can think of people who are better at the things your brother likes. You've still got alot of growing to do. in a few years you'll probley be better at lots of things then your brother is at now. there are lots of things you are better at right now then your brother is if you think about it. Think i'm wrong, i had similar thoughts when i was your age. I'm 35 now and see things alot differently. Don't let shingles get you down either. when i was 16, I broke my back and messed up my spine really bad. for a long time no one would let me do anything. When i was 17, I started lifting weights to build myself up. If I had let that injury keep me down, I would have nothing now. As it stands, I got built up. I got a ton of strength,I went overseas, got married in the philippines, built my own bike from a junk yard, and have a little girl just like me(thank god she looks like her mother though):) things might look bad for you now, but trust me they will get better. It just takes your hard work to make it that way.

at the first rots showing i went in my stormtrooper costume
2 of my friends went as darthvader and an other stormtrooper
we were playing his escort as we walked into the threater
then as we walk out of the hallway that leads into the theater
we walk out infront of the screen to get to our seats and everyone started cheering and clapping (i'm from holland and costumes like full stormtroopers and darthvader are rare here) so we were jsut having a little fun and we just stood there and bowed
then we got to our seats some guy behind me kept poking my helmet i was getting anoyed so i asked him to stop it and he did surpisingly
then he started poking my friends darthvader helmet and he asked him to stop it again and the guy got angry and started ranting on about being a costumed freak
so i took of my helmet and told him to back off
and he started on me about trying to be the center of attention and being a stupid kid that wants to look like a wanna be nazi soldier
so i went to the guards there and told him about this guy and he was removed from the theater
then when the movie was over we did the same routine again me and my friend guarding darth vader and that guy was waiting for us outside with a knife
so we walk out of the building and people kept giving us compliments we were having a blast even posed with a few people for pictures then this guy comes walking up to me threatening us with a knife and he continued to rant some more about us being idiots and nazi's ect.
then the coolest thing happaned about 20 people stepped infront of us and they held the guy off and forced him to leave

the trouble some people will go through

how ever when i got home my phone was stolen from a little compartment i made into my gun so i could keep an eye on it

They have guards at the movies in Holland? Are they real security guards, or is that just what you call ushers in Holland?

That's what I'd like to know: whether that Nazi-thing is typically European, or whether it happens elsewhere too.
I have examples from Belgium, Germany and now the Netherlands as well. What about the States? Canada?

Also: doesn't sound like that compartiment in your gun worked very well. :S

Well it's no secret that the Empire was heavily inspired by Nazi Germany. I mean, they call them STORMTROOPERS, afterall. It doesn't surprise me that much.

While it is no excuse, you have to understand that to little kids the magic is REAL. If you are a stormtrooper, they think you are a bad guy and act on their kiddie logic (you were chasing Luke or torturing Leia ...). While I was the 1st to tell my daughter there was no Santa, she thinks Star Wars is real (and she's 4 1/2).

The reason that the Disney SW weekend chars have handlers is for this very reason, of course they are trained to "act" and simply use the acting out as fodder for thier show. Sometime Darth Maul scares the kids to be quiet, etc.

The cons and stuff is mostly for adults and they have no excuse, but have a little more patience with the little kids. Maybe have a buddy system and have friends who don't dress up be your handler. Because while my daughter did not blink about Santa, it would CRUSH her that Shaak Ti is just some person in a costume.
