Wait, Nickelback is a real band? I figured they were a joke band or a punchline, like Spinal Tap.

I'd wager that's exactly what they're going to do.

Dude, Vampire Weekend are only slightly better than Nickelback [face_batting]

For someone who doesn't listen to much music, you have a very good choice for a favorite band. Hats off.

Of course, I literally cannot fathom you enjoying Bon Jovi.

One important difference: Spinal Tap are fantastic.

I still have a grudge against my Vampire Weekend loving friend for playing them so often. In my mind, they're the poster boys for pseudo alternative with every single ounce of personality drained. It's like reading a Stephenie Meyer book; the author has heard of vampires and the horror genre, but clearly has no understanding about what makes it work. They literally have nothing to offer except for quirkiness (which is my personal theory on how they've been so successful). I mean... if I wanted quirky-for-the-sake-of-quirky I'd listen to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Jesus Lizard or The New Pornographers.

    /conceited rant.

If that doesn't work, count yourself lucky. It's "Some Nights" by Fun.

Thanks. I don't even know enough about music to categorize them by genre -- all I know is that they use reconstructed ancient instruments, sing in Greek, and have catchy music. I suppose that's good enough for me!

It's not really my thing. A lot of the songs I've gathered from my friends are dance club music type of things, which tend to be loud, annoying, and obnoxious. A handful of them are decent, but that might just be Stockholm syndrome from all the time I've had to listen to them at deafening clubs.

If you wanted to get artsy fartsy you could probably get away with referring to them as "neofolk", but Greek folk works just as well (and if you ask me, is much clearer on what they actually sound like).

Also, blackmyron, forgot to mention Neko Case is my personal go to for the "everything but country" crowd. Great example that not all country music (alt country, but close enough) has to be strangled with twangy telecaster guitars and be about booze and tractors.

I really enjoy these conversations when they pop up, so I'm more than willing to take the -20 reputation loss [face_not_talking]

I think Neko Case is lovely. I'm definitely in the "everything but country" crowd, but I suppose I mean modern radio country, if that makes sense? I love Johnny Cash, and he would be considered a country artist, although personally I think he transcends the genre.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean, because I have nothing but contempt for that brand of country as well (which in today's market accounts for about 90% of it). The only country I really like is alternative country and folk country (which I'd definitely lump Johnny Cash into.) Basically, if it sounds like it wouldn't be out of place on Firefly, I'll probably like it.

Oh, how could I forget to mention Led Zeppelin from my favorite band list! Also add U2 and Soundgarden

Fav individual singers (in no order): David Bowie, Billy Joel, Cat Stevens, Jeff Buckley... I am sure more will come to mind at a later point.

You have excellent taste. My favorite channel on Sirius XM other than the Pulse is the 80s on 8 channel. I actually grew up on that music but I love it when someone who was born in the 80s or 90s gets into it.

I absolutely love 80's music, but not what most people think of when they think of 80's music. One thing many don't realize is that the 80's was the most diverse decade for music, save for perhaps the 2000's, and the 2000's was arguably a decade more about refining the old, as it hasn't showed any sign of beginning nearly as many new trends or genres. The birth of alternative, the real creation of electronic music (yes, I know it had technically existed as early as the 1920's, but until Depeche Mode it was very rarely used outside of avant-garde), synthpop, the growing diversity and musical complexity in heavy metal, world music becoming popular through albums like Graceland, punk bands started to become ambitious and resulted in masterpieces like Husker Du's Zen Arcade, the emergence of hip-hop... a lot happened. Hell, even much the ultra-mainstream pop music, like Michael Jackson and Prince, oozed creativity and ambition. It's just too bad cheesy new-wave and glam metal (and MTV, of course) has to sully image most have of the 80's.
