Anyone who watches movies with sound is spoiled tbh.

"Silent" movies still had sound. A true old person would know that, and be complaining about "talkies" and "Technicolor." smh.

    Live orchestration doesn't count!

Also I don't think I have ever seen a silent film in my life.

    Change that.

    Change that now.

Go watch some. I recommend the Kino Video editions, as they have the accurate soundtracks.

The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari was great! I quite enjoyed it.

Also, for a modern silent film, check out the HP Lovecraft Society's silent Call of Cthulhu. And if you have the stomach for it and want to watch some vintage gore... There's The Begotten.

Every single one I listed is outright hilarious.

Some of them even intentionally so. :p

Probably one of the most depressing statements to read:

"over 90 percent of American films made before 1929 are lost."

    :(

I would recommend Un Chien Andalou, but really, the best part is the opening scene, which you can see on YouTube, if you're curious.

Here's a hint: I scream, you scream, we all scream for eye scream.

Or Fritz Lang's "M". It's a sound film (no dialogue but there's a narrator, music & noises) and it's absolutely chilling.

If you're interested in animation, there's the Adventures of Prince Achmed. It's done entirely with shadow puppet cut-outs.

German Expressionist cinema for the win! Metropolis is one of my favorite all-time films, and I once had the opportunity to hear it performed with original live musical accompaniment by The Alloy Orchestra. I'm also quite fond of Der Golem, and indeed I have Mezco's highly detailed statuette of said golem adorning my office at work.

Yes! Especially with the newly restored version.

Kevin O'Neill did a brilliant job bringing Metropolis to life in Alan Moore's Roses of Berlin.

Another interesting film I saw was Haxan. It was mainly about witchcraft.

Still need to finish sitting through The Begotten. At the time, I was eating Froot Loops while watching the opening scene. Generally, gore and squick doesn't bother me, but that scene did. Still haven't quite found the stomach to sit through it, and thinking about watching it just makes me feel ill. One of these days, though! One of these days!

That just reminded me... the Alloy Orchestra was performing a score to Blackmail, one of the early Hitchcock silent films, at a theater I worked at in 2009. The guys were hanging out in the lobby before the show chatting with us, and I couldn't put my finger on where I knew one of the guys from... and finally I realized that he was Roger Miller from Mission of Burma, probably the most important American post-punk band of all time. I got to talk to him about all kinds of good ol' days punk stuff. It was amazing.

Sigh. If only I were in California -- I wouldn't have SDCC tickets but I was offered to be a plus one at the Random House party. Would've been great to chat with authors about the new continuity over drinks... but alas.
