In a non-binding referendum, Puerto Rico votes changing its territorial status and requesting to become the 51st state of the United States. Should they get their own star? Isn't that kind of like that lil Kardashian kid, the youngest daughter one no one really cares about get a star on the Hollywood walk of fame? =
there are many states with less vibrant and interesting cultural contributions to the overall tapestry of the united states than puerto rico
The thing is that of the 53% who voted to change Puerto Rico's status quo, only something like 60% voted for statehood so it really isn't a majority. I do hope Puerto Rico becomes a state, but I'd like more people to vote for it first.
allow me to clarify that while puerto rico and puertorricans in general are awesome i do not support statehood. i support independence (despite the financial hardships that would bring in the short term). this is borne of the principled argument that statehood cannot make up for a century+ of colonial oppression and theft. the solution to imperialism is not wholesale annexation.
You're not necessarily wrong, but independence (even including "free association") has so little support on the island that the chances of it ever happening are slim.
yeah i thought it was clear i wasnt speaking to the practical concerns. if we're speaking practically then the facts seem to be that, due to financial and political factors, nothing will happen for at least another couple decades and puerto rico will remain a territory
