By the way, I read a book once about the making of the Wizard of Oz and at the back of the book, they brought things up to speed to the 60s, 70s and 80s and talked about the legacy of the film. Here's an interesting statistic. A marketing company surveyed children throughout the United States ages 5 to 12 years old and showed them pictures of the characters from the Wizard of Oz.

98% of the children could recognize all the main characters, knew the name of each character and could identify the movie they were from. Wow. The marketing company reported the recognition factor was unprecedented and unequaled by any other entertainment property, including Disney. The Wizard of Oz is so embedded in American culture it's amazing.

 

I think the AFI could save themselves some trouble and just put the whole screenplay as one quote. Yes, Yes, and Yes.

"Follow the yellow brick road." Yes

"I'll get you my pretty!" Yes

"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" Yes

"I'm melting! I'm melting!" Yes

 

That can't be Ann Coulter; her dress isn't cut low enough.

Yeah, see, the thing is I don't even like this movie. But these lines are all so brilliant that I have to keep saying yes.

I love that quote because she cries out against the injustice of being brought to justice ("Oh, what a world! What a world.") Though, I have to admit that I rather like the Wicked explanation for it better.

 

This is the only other quote that I really remember from the film (other than the musical numbers). Yes.

 

Everyone remembers the I'm melting bit, but it's the "What a world, oh, what a world" bit that always made me laugh.

I say yes.

Great line and an obvious establishment metaphor, too.

 

Yeah, the only line from this film that really works as social commentary. One of my favorites. Yes.

 

Honestly, I didn't look at the list. You just sort of knew these quotes were gonna come up.

 

It was funny when you did that, because they were both on the list.
