Yes, and he did. Talzin was an ally as well as his mother, she was not a master and she was betrayed by Sidious as well.

"People's perspective on this guy is going to shift and they're gong to have some very complicated feelings about him by the time this arc is done," says Witwer, a lifelong fan of George Lucas' universe.

"Darth Maul is going to go from that cool guy to looking at him and going, 'I'm actually really afraid of this guy and someone has to do something about him.' "

Near the end of last season, Witwer was tapped by Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni to voice Maul, the former apprentice to Darth Sidious (aka the Emperor from the original Star Wars trilogy) who was presumed dead after Obi-Wan Kenobi sliced him in half with a lightsaber and fell down a long industrial shaft.

It turned out Maul got better, but not in the head: His brother Savage Opress (voiced by Clancy Brown) found him on a garbage planet in a state of almost complete insanity, with junk pieced together to form spider-like legs and an obsessive need for vengeance against Kenobi.

The debut of the fifth season this fall began Maul and Opress' plan to build a criminal army to battle Kenobi and the Jedi, but left Opress without a left arm and both in dire straits.

Saturday morning's new episode (9:30 ET/PT) picks up with Pre Vizsla (Jon Favreau) and the Mandalorian Death Watch finding the two Sith and forming a tenuous alliance to both retake the throne of Mandalore but also become a force in the galactic underworld.

It also begins a three-episode arc that includes strong emotional swings and a "showstopper" finale, Witwer says. "Your jaw will be on the floor, man."

The epic team-up of Maul and Vizsla is a bit like evil peanut butter meeting nefarious chocolate.

"When Maul takes command here, he really does have to summon all that training he got from Darth Sidious," Witwer says. "He's got to now be the strategic genius and also he has to be diplomatic at times.

"You're also going to see different personality traits. He has a little bit more of a twisted sense of humor and sophistication that we perhaps never attributed to the character before."

What's challenging from an actor's point of view, though, is layering underneath all that the mad mental state fans saw him in when he was hiding in a cave like a spider. Maul's decreasing grasp on reality was shown to express for the first time on screen what the Dark Side of the Force looks like in a character's not strong enough to filter it.

"Darth Vader is very controlled for most of the time we seen him" in the original Star Wars movies, Witwer says. "But what we don't see is what's going on underneath the mask and all the madness that that character's dealing with.

"This character is trying to sound rational when at his core he is deeply insane. That's a nice little way to describe all of the villains in Star Wars: The more evil and self-centered and greedy they get, the madder they become. Darth Vader and Sidious, they're not what you would call sane individuals."

Witwer feels that the definition of evil in Star Wars is becoming so self-centered that you become a twisted, completely unrecognizable version of yourself. And it's happening to Maul as it did to Sidious, who once was the manipulative Senator Palpatine but is later a decrepit yet powerful Emperor completely off his rocker.

"Palpatine is this bent, old twisted man and Vader is this half-man/half-droid and Maul has been cut in half, and the reason they've survived is they cannot let go of themselves," Witwer explains. "The Sith do not conceive of a life beyond what they have right now. The more things they get, the more things they want, and these things lead them to more irrational decisions to reach further and further for more power and more things.

"Because they're reaching so far, bad things happen to them, and yet they can't let themselves go. If they let go and move on and die and become one with the Force, that doesn't make any sense to them. There is no afterlife or existence beyond them."

So how does Witwer, a good-natured sort who's played bad guys on screen before (such as Doomsday in Smallville), furnish all that with just his voice?

"You have to go to a very unpleasant place and really just launch from there," he says. "It's gotta be unpleasant for you. If it's not unpleasant for you performing it, then it's not going to have any teeth when the audience sees it.

"It's just layers of bad, bad stuff, man!"

Witwer's entry into the Star Wars universe as a performer was doing voiceover work for Vader's apprentice Starkiller in The Force Unleashed video game and its sequel, and it was doing those where he learned how important figuring out the environment around an animated character was in lending real, concrete physicality with his voice.

He often asks Filoni how cold it is in a certain room where Maul is in a scene, or how many other characters are with him. In one particularly primal sequence in an upcoming episode, Witwer had to be conscious of how big the room Maul was in and how much physical exertion he'd been under. "Just the rage but also the pleasure of the man after this moment," he teases.

You can't keep a bad man down — not even when he's sliced in half with a lightsaber in front of millions of moviegoers! Star Wars: The Clone Wars resurrects one of the franchise's most popular baddies, the Sith apprentice Darth Maul, in the series' two-part season finale, beginning tonight (8/7c, Cartoon Network). George Lucas himself gave the order to bring back the red-and-black horned demon, who was killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace. But it was up to supervising producer Dave Filoni to make it fly with the fans.
"We had to be ready for a tidal wave of questions and concerns — Is this too much? Have we gone too far? — and bring back Maul in a way that's both exciting and believable," says Filoni, who handed the choice voice gig to Sam Witwer, a hardcore Star Wars fan who is best known as the vampire Aidan on Syfy's Being Human. "I was very confident I could do Darth Maul justice and take him in a deeper direction — but then I started to freak out and lose sleep," Witwer admits. "I knew that if this didn't work the fans would come find me!"
The nightmarish plot (startlingly mature for a kid-approved show) reveals that — spoiler alert! — Maul's torso somehow ended up on the acid-rain, junkyard planet Lotho Minor where he's hiding out at the bottom of an exhaust shaft. "The twist is that Maul is so psychologically tortured and full of hate that the dark side of the Force has given him these hideous spider legs," Witwer reports. "He's a little bit Gollum, a little bit Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now. And a whole lotta scary."
This isn't Witwer's first time at the Star Wars rodeo. He previously played the "Son" in the Clone Wars "Mortis" arc last year. He also voiced both Galen Marek and Darth Sidious in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed video games. "Sam is part of the family at this point," says Filoni. "We knew he was able to go to that crazy, wackadoodle place with Darth Maul and be really out there with his emotions. Maul starts out in this story as a rambling, incoherent, crying mess — basically, he's a rabid animal — and Sam gives a powerful performance. People will be surprised to learn that Maul is far more cunning and clever and intelligent than he was portrayed in Phantom Menace where he was seen as a 'Yes, master!' kind of assassin. Don't forget he was trained for years by Darth Sidious. There is a lot of the master in this apprentice."

I get the point that after some time he had more than that one dimensional role of a thirst for power (after being reinvented and put back together by Savage), but I still didn't really pick that up until reading Son of Dathomir.

Thats what they were doing, constantly changing his character every time you saw him and he was gaining humanity back along with his independence. Maul, Ventress and Tano seemed to have been heading in other directions, towards their own independent operators and finding themselves and their own purpose.

Sam Witwer: Yes, indeed. I loved that aspect of it, and it was a strangely challenging episode to do because it was so talky. It’s the first episode with Maul that’s just a character episode, just a bunch of guys talking to each other. So if those guys aren’t interesting, we lose.

HW: It’s hard to believe that when “The Lawless” airs, wrapping up this arc, it’ll only be the fifth episode in which we’ve seen Maul. What do you make of his transformation so far?

SW: Dave and I from the very beginning talked about this storyline way back when we were doing the “Maul in a cave” episodes.

We knew how he would evolve, and it would require Maul to be different every time you saw him, to be evolving all the time. From madness, to gaining some of his humanity back but really being full of rage, to simmering down on that a bit, to now evolving to this strategic and diplomatic place.

So when we first aired the insane Maul stuff some people loved it, but others said, “Hey, that’s not Darth Maul!” To which I can now say to them, “Hey, it’s not good storytelling if we just give you Darth Maul right away, if we don’t deal with the consequences of him being cut in half and left behind.” There’s gotta be a major cost involved. So when people made those comments, what we wanted to say was, “Hey guys, give it a chance. You don’t judge a movie by the first five minutes.”

Now he’s resembling the Darth Maul we know from The Phantom Menace. He cuts down Pre Vizsla as ruthlessly as he does Qui-Gon Jinn. And yet there’s even so much more to him now. We know now that there is this madness underneath. We know he has this incredible mind that no one has previously seen. We’re into the good part of the story now.

HW: In “Eminence” and “Shades of Reason” we saw a degree of leadership in Maul that we never got to glimpse in Phantom Menace.

SW: On The Clone Wars, we had to show that Maul was capable of being a general. Darth Sidious chose him to be his apprentice and trained him well. Maul wasn’t just a mindless hitman. And this was the version of the character that I’d been waiting to do for a long time.

I mean, it started with Filoni telling me he needed Maul to be like Gollum, and when I read the script I said we’ve also got a little Apocalypse Now here. He’s also Col. Kurtz. Dave agreed. So Maul became the combination of Gollum and Col. Kurtz, with a little bit of Peter Serafinowicz as Maul from Phantom Menace. Now, though, we’ve seen a change.

NEXT: How Darth Maul has become an intellectual character. And also, how he may have inspired Darth Sidious to keep in faith in Vader even after that little swan-dive into a volcano.HW: Now we get to see that Maul’s actually an intellectual character. He’s not just a blunt instrument, an assassin, like it seemed in the movie.

SW: He had to be. The Sith as a culture realized, “Hey, we’re all bad guys, we don’t work well together, so let’s keep it to two. Otherwise we’ll be killing each other left and right.” So if you follow the Rule of Two, you have to pick your apprentice very carefully.

You don’t just pick a guy because he can do cool flips and swing a sword good. You choose a guy who is brilliant and gifted in so many ways, physically and mentally, and can carry on the Sith tradition proudly. A thuggish hitman would be a hindrance when trying to take over the galaxy. You need someone who can work with you and to whom you can pass the baton when the time comes.

And that’s a theme in the Star Wars saga as a whole. It’s so very much about Sidious trying to find that successor. He thinks he’s found that person in Darth Maul, but then Maul is cut down. And then he thinks, “Well, I’ll pick a guy who’s already trained really well,” but it doesn’t work out with Count Dooku because he quickly has his eye on this Anakin Skywalker guy.

But sadly Darth Vader never becomes as good as he could have been because he’s disabled. And finally he sets his sights on Luke Skywalker, and that’s the guy who does him in.

HW: It’s a continual streak of disappointment for Darth Sidious, in a way.

SW: Well, it’s professionalism, man! There are things he could do to assist these people and help them along, but that’s not really the Sith way. Palpatine is looking for someone who could ideally defeat him and take the Sith mantle from him, and he does find that guy. The only thing is that guy has no interest in becoming a Sith. And that’s Luke Skywalker.

So, it’s the perfectionist streak that Palpatine has. And what’s really fun to note is that Darth Maul, having survived his grievous injuries, plants the seed in Palpatine’s head that maybe you don’t give up on these guys so quickly. If they’re dead, or you think they’ve been killed, maybe they’re not. Maybe they can survive, maybe they can amount to something. That’s something we get to see coming up, Sidious realizing that. That ultimately leads to Darth Vader.

HW: Yeah, I mean why did Palpatine still think Vader could be a worthwhile apprentice after his little brush with molten lava?

SW: Common wisdom would be, you find this guy lying by a volcano, his flesh smoking and burned up, with no limbs, and you’d say, “Hey stormtrooper, put a blaster bolt in this guy. Put him out of his misery.” You don’t rebuild that guy. That’s ridiculous. Unless maybe you’ve already seen a guy getting cut in half and crawling through garbage for ten years, clinging to life with every ounce of determination he has. That’s the nature of the Sith, they don’t see anything beyond their corporeal existence.

They live completely in the moment, but in the most unhealthy way. They’re self-obsessed, selfish, narcissistic, so much so that they can’t see that there’s any significance beyond their own lives. That’s not like a Jedi who’s wounded in battle but realizes that his death could mean something or inspire others, and thus can let go. If a Sith lies near death, they look at it like, “I can’t! I can’t! There’s still so much to gain. There’s still so much I want. Because if I die I lose everything.” So they continue to push themselves well past the point of logic.

You have Darth Vader, who lives a terrible life, he lives a pathetic, tortured existence but it’s still preferable to having nothing, which is how he views death. Same thing with Darth Sidious, you look at him in Return of the Jedi. He’s over 100 years old and is a bent old man. But that’s better than the alternative, which is nothing. I mean, the fact that we’re learning more about the core morality of Star Wars is really fun. We’re learning things from The Clone Wars that informs how we even watch the original movies from over thirty years ago.

HW: So, in “The Lawless” Darth Maul is going to have a little Sith reunion with Darth Sidious. How do you think he views his old master these days?

SW: When you’re a liar, a person of low moral fortitude, really any explanation you need to be true can be true. Especially if you’re smart enough. You can figure out a way to justify anything. Part of Maul thinks, “Yes, I would like to reclaim my spot as the apprentice and I want to prove why I deserve that.” And then there’s another side that’s like, “Screw Palpatine. I’m the master now. Savage is the apprentice, and I’m going to show him how it’s done, and if he has a problem with that, I’m going to take him out.”

The Sith training is nothing short of torture, so there’s always a great deal of hatred built-in to the master-apprentice relationship, an intense animosity. We see that between Vader and the Emperor in the original trilogy. So he may want both things, depending on what he needs to desire at any given point.

HW: Is there a developing rivalry between Maul and Savage? Maul doesn’t quite treat his brother like a brother.

SW: Maul keeps calling Savage “apprentice,” and will never call him “brother,” absolutely. But they do need each other, and there’s an element of, “Together we’ll talk on all of them!” And I love that they threw in a moment of them being comrades when Maul tells Savage how he’s going to screw over the Mandalorians, and even rests his hand on Savage’s new robot hand. The Sith are dicks. What can I tell you man, they’re trouble. They don’t have the “working together” thing down, but they do know how to have people work for them.

HW: I realize you probably know Maul’s ultimate fate on the show. But what would you, as the person who’s given vocal life to Maul, like to see his fate be? What do you want for him?

SW: (laughs) Oh, boy. What can I tell you? What would I like to see happen to Maul? Yeah…I can say this. What I’d like to see happen to Maul is what Dave Filoni has told me is what happens to Maul. None of this is taken lightly at Lucasfilm. This is George Lucas’ doing, all of this stuff. He’s the one engineering these stories that me, Dave, the other voice actors, and the animators are implementing.

So there is a long game here. Look, the effect of Darth Maul on the show is a pronounced one. Maybe he dies after these episodes. Maybe he doesn’t. But either way, his effect on the show will be a lasting one. That’s all I’m gonna say.

You know, I honestly don't pay attention to the interviews between Filoni and whoever else might be affiliated with TCW, I just watch the shows and make my own judgement. This is the last time you see Maul in a TCW episode. If you or anyone else might suggest he's anything more than submissive to Sidious, you're seeing things differently than I am.

Whatever, he's complicated and multidimensional as I said. The toon reflects the interviews as those episodes are finished, plus read SOD is canon and the continuation to where the toon left off. Maul in Lawless still was under the apprentice conditioning, and feared his master. In SOD those chains are broken. Don't forget Maul was mentally wounded when he was found by Savage, and set back to the point to where he left off in TPM by Talzin after she healed and repaired him mentally and physically. Some 10-12 years are missing since TPM up to that point, so that means further Sith training is missing and he was only like 23 years old in TPM and he looked between 7-9 years of age when he was taken by Sidious as a child.

It made much more sense to have had her the head of the Ghost crew anyway after the Clone Wars ended, but I don't think the creative team thought of that through.

Off topic, but this shot looks especially nice, Clone Wars level good. Mostly due to lighting I think. I guess on Rebels they can approach Clone Wars level quality but just on a smaller scale.

A cool angle would be if after the reveal that Vader was Anakin, and Anakin was Ahsoka's old master, the ghost crew get a bit wary of Ahsoka.

"She was trained by that guy. And he's the Sith Lord at the Emperor's side... what if some of him rubbed off on her? She could turn to the Dark Side too! I don't want Ezra being around her!"

That wouldn't necessarily make sense, considering that unless they somehow manage to fill the gaps between Ahsoka's walk out on the Jedi up through the culmination of Order 66 and the rise of the Rebel Alliance, how could she have had anything to do with Anakin as the Sith Lord? I'd assume if nothing else, Kanan was told about the former Jedi Master turned Sith Lord. And maybe he heard about Anakin's Padowan who left the Order BEFORE Anakin turned to the Dark Side.

This is a pretty good idea. I mean, anyone would be wary if they found out some ex-Jedi's old master became a Sith Lord. I mean, as far as they know, Anakin could have been practicing dark side things during the Clone Wars before he turned, and passed those onto Ahsoka before she left.

That was her future self warning back on Mortis. Tano seems to have realized that Bariss was telling the truth about the Jedi, but she simply was wrong in her execution. All the warning signs about the Jedi of that era were becoming apparent to Tano, and why she chose to leave.

Depends on how long they intend on dragging on the new Inquisitor stories. It also depends on how long they intend on keeping Ahsoka herself as a background character in Rebels. If there's only going to be one final meeting with Ahsoka and Vadar and it happens this season, there's no question that they'd save it for the end.

I'd say it depends on how the writers want to portray the battle: huge/epic/melodramatic like Anakin and Obi-Wan in ROTS, or just something that happens like Anakin/Obi-Wan/Ventress in TCW? (Or for that matter, Anakin/Dooku?)

Assuming there is only one battle. IF it is Barriss and IF they do make it a personal vendetta then presumably that's not going to be a one-and-done duel - it will be an ongoing battle of wills and wits, Kanan vs Inquisitor Mark 1 style. The first one will probably have masked ladyquisitor getting her backside handed to her by Ahsoka until suddenly the mask is knocked off/removed and... 'A-HA! 'Tis I, your old lover best friend Barriss!' cue the shock making Ahsoka sloppy and her butt getting kicked instead. The advantage goes back and forth a few times, maybe there is the odd duel, then come the finale they fight again, Barriss taunts Ahsoka about the 'Jedi Way' or something similar, Ahsoka points out she's not in fact a Jedi and Barriss bites the big one, presumably run through with a lightsaber for extra phallic symbolism points.
