    After going through that Photoshop planet tutorial and coming out with something pretty impressive, I decided to work on a texture for an Earth-like planet. Here's what I've done on it so far.

    [image=http://www.angelfire.com/alt/3d-duckboy0/Alternate_Earth_Progress_4.jpg]

    Note: This is going to be used in a fanfilm I'm working on, so I won't release a finished version of the texture map until it debuts.

    Very loosely based. Here's the tutorial, though.

    Photoshop Planet Tutorial

    That just taught me a few basics on how to create a decent-looking planet. I adapted it to creating a texture map for use in 3ds Max, and came up with this.

    [image=http://www.angelfire.com/alt/3d-duckboy0/Random_Planet.jpg]

    Creating an Earthlike planet requires similar techniques, though there's a lot more to it than applying a texture to your brush and painting. To add a high degree of realism to my planet, I'm using the Blue Marble Earth texture maps from that NASA site. I'm using the map as both a texture palette for my painting, and as a source of mountains and stuff to cut and paste into my texture map. I'll write up a tutorial for this once I'm finished.

    Thanks. A lot of the maps over at Sci-fi 3d are kind of basic, yet they get used over and over in fanfilms and such. Good to have some variety instead of seeing Naboo every time I watch a film or fx test.

    Update Number Next...getting closer...

    Wow! good work. Thats awesome. Im guessing that you use some nasa shots to get stuff right? well great work so far! You still have a few islands to do, so good luck! :D

    Updated again. The next update should be the final product, although I may want to go back and redo some of my earlier work on the texture map.

    A cookie to anyone who can figure out which parts of the Blue Marble Earth image correspond to each island and continent on my map.

    Not quite final update. Everything's textured, but almost everything on the left side of the map looks really sub-par compared to the right side. So I'm going to redo the left side before I'm finished. Then I'll tweak everything a bit and that'll be it.

    And here's the final update, along with a few images of the texture mapped onto a sphere in 3ds max, as requested. And made pretty thanks to the tutorial in the link fireresq7 posted.

    Looks great diab... I started this a few hours ago. I will likely offer this up as soon as it's done if ZOO wants it. It is almost entirely hand painted, just used those nasa images for a little healing-tool luminence, to get the texture the way I wanted.

    8192x4096 is the native res.

    Displacement Map

    Also will be doing a bump map, night illumination map and if possible... a cloud map. These are nearly impossible to make look good.

    Very nice! Only two suggestions and/or request! :)

    1) The water - I would suggest giving the water some subtle depth variation - perhaps some lighter/greener blue hues where there are shoals or continental shelfs, maybe some subtle darkening here and there for a trench. Your land is on point, so if the water has similar subtle variation, I think the overall effect will be that much cooler, especially for closer shots.

    2) Could you post a few beauty shots with the planet lit from the side? I figured you were just showing off how the continents wrap around the world with your shots above, but dead-on lighting has never been visually attractive to me. Some shots with the terminator visible would be too cool :)

    Thanks for sharing your WIP once again!

    For a purely hand-painted map, that looks very nice. I have a few suggestions, though.

    First, a lot of your shorelines seem very angular in places. Some areas should be bumpy, while others should be more smooth.

    Second, if you aren't already planning to do this, you may want to take into account the climate changes as you get closer to the poles. Your ice caps are pretty big, and even overlap the continents at points. Thus, you need more patches of ice and barren tundra in the far northern and far southern regions.

    Otherwise, great job.

    I figured. I'll render a couple more beauty shots tomorrow, once I finish adding shallow water around the shorelines.

    Yarr, matey, this be the stupidest theme I've ever seen. Someone had way too much time on their hands.

    But anyways, the other pics are updated, and here's the final version of the texture map, unless anyone else has any pertinent issues with it.

    I tried your map, but I get these big letters on the planet, which makes it look totally fake.

    Is there a way in Photoshop to fix this???

    LOL. Is this a joke?

    Of course you get letters all over the planet. The letters are on there because I'm going to use it for a fanfilm, namely ScapaCamem's "A Vow of Revenge." That means you can't use it until the fanfilm debuts, at which point I'll release the full-rez version of the map for public consumption.
