What are people's thoughts on Varg's music vs his politics?

 

Well, he generally keeps his stupid bigotry out of his music, so I just try not to think about how abhorrent his personal philosophies are, and focus on the sound and the otherwise goofy guy who likes his cornflakes CARISPY.

 

i don't care for his politics, but i don't feel they overwhelm his music - it is thematically ambivalent enough to invite manifold interpretations.

 

Only heard a few Burzum songs which I thought were not bad. I'm not really into black metal but I will listen to a tiny bit of it here and there. In a way I'm more fascinated by the culture and the history of the genre than the music itself.

 

I guess it's one of those things that I sorta struggle with, because Varg is a fantastic parody and fantastic musician but I guess in taking his music seriously you're associated with his fascism in some capacity.

I can't stand Absurd, that stuff where the NSBM mentality permeates the lyrics is just... ugh, and the musicianship just isn't there.

yes, that is what i meant. i just listened to some absurd, though. it seems pretty terrible, even in strictly musical terms. one band that is definitely of that ilk that i like is graveland. the earlier stuff, anyway.

 

I can, to a point, understand the resentment of Christianity as a destructive force - what Chrisendom did to Germanic, Celtic, Nordic and similar cultures was nothing short of destructive hegemony - but the racism? Please, haven't we learned that the Aryan myth is just that - a myth? Aryans were northern Indians, not Vjikjings! or Teutons.

Varg, like many intelligent fascists, is highly charismatic but that doesn't cover the fact he's just plain wrong.

 

it strikes me as something of an indulgence in fantasy, this going-back-to-the-roots stuff. it's the draping of a fantasy existence over your regular one. neato mosquito!

I assume that in addition to blastbeats and guitar, all Norwegian black metallers are proficient in martial weapons like swords, morningstars, axes and spears. Abbath is probably a deft hand with a crossbow, too.
