Why is there the need for the rule of two for THE JEDI¿? That I never understood.

"An apprentice, you have, Qui-Gon. Impossible, to take on a second."
It is some part of the Jedi Code...not the EU's supposedly.

Training a Padawan is a full-time job. Judging from what we've seen in the movies, the Younglings are taught in a classroom-type environment under the powerful masters (such as Yoda). As they age, they become Padawans and are given to a Jedi Knight or Jedi Master for personal tutelage, which lasts for quite some time, until they are ready for the Jedi Trials.

The same reason why love is forbidden for the Jedi: Attachments.

When the Jedi Master takes on a new apprentice while he's still training the old apprentice, the old apprentice would feel a sense of jealousy towards the new apprentice because he/she is hogging the Master's attention away from the old apprentice and jealousy leads to anger, then it leads to hate, and then it leads to the Dark Side. We all saw how Obi-wan reacted when Qui-Gon vowed to take Anakin as his padawan learner...he was hurt and a bit angry which is why a Jedi Master can only train 1 apprentice.

Because the force is so complicated, it takes very long to teach one individual being as much as the Master knows. Its takes long enough to teach one apprentice, imagine two?

Also, this way there is no 'sibling rivalry [sp]' between the two apprentices.

Because the old Jedi were bound by silly rules and codes.

Because the old Jedi were bound by silly rules and codes.

Even though, as has been shown, many of them made sense.

    ^^ True...

And yah, that would be pretty hard to watch out for two Anakin's at once ;) Although I wouldn't mind...[face_love]

As Master Windu stated, the code forbids it. Why? Because the Master must devote all of his attention to completing the training of one apprentice, and the Master can not bring the training of one padawan to a conclusion while he's training another nor can the Master compromise the new training of the new youngling or padawan when he's not at the same level as the padawan who is about to finish his/her training and be knighted.

Can a Jedi ever take a second apprentice? Such as after their old padawan has already become a knight? or is it a one-apprentace per jedi ever type thing?

He doesn't mean impossible as in a rule of 2, he means it as in it can't be done.

Didn't Qui Gonn try to get past this by saying that Obi Wan was ready for the trials and Obi Wan agreed?

A jedi can have more than one apprentice, just not at the same time. Had Jinn lived, Kenobi would have passed the trials anad gone on his own for a while, then Jinn would/could have taken Anakin as his new apprentice.
