I always thought that in chronological order Indiana Jones went....

The Inidana Jones beginning of The Last Crusade (The part where he is young)

    Raiders of the Lost Ark

    The Temple of Doom

The Last Crusade (with adult Indy)

Recently I heard that The Temple of Doom was a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Is this true?
    Does the real timeline go....

The beginning of The Last Crusade (young Indy)
    The Temple of Doom?
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    The Last Crusade (adult Indy)

So does anyone know who it really goes.

    Thanks

    Last Crusade (1912)
    Temple of Doom (1935)
    Raiders (1936)
    Last Crusade (1938)

I don't know if there's a specific reason why Temple of Doom is set before Raiders. If someone has any ideas, let's hear them.

Thats really strange. I never noticed it because I don't really compare the dates of the films. So does anyone know why Lucas and Speilberge set Temple of Doom before Raiders.

Lucas and Spielberg didn't want Nazis in the film so they set it in 1935 before Hitler and the Nazis started their quest for power.

It also makes it easier not having to deal with the absence of Marion.

The reason for the shuffled chronology is simple. It makes Indiana Jones a dynamic character. Watched in diegetic order (minus the childhood flashback) his character arcs from money-grubbing adventurer to noble crusader.

Just like the other Harrison Ford character in that other Lucas trilogy?

    jp-30,

Whatever are you talking about? Lucas made other movies? Harrison Ford got more film work?

    Rubbish!

    Yup, that's right.

To be honest, I like to watch them in chronological order...I think the series works better that way too.

    Temple of Doom
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    The Last Crusade

Indy's character works better that way, as Lost Ark and Last Crusade really seem to flow better from one to the other (ie. "Indiana Jones and the Nazi Threat, in two parts"), with Temple being a little sort of intro to the character's crazy adventures, and Indy Iv being a sort of epilogue to the series, showing Indy's later days...

I think I remember at least thinking I was going to watch them in chronological order, but I'm not sure if I ever did...

I once tried to watch the Back to the Future trilogy in chronological order...

It gave me a splitting headache.
