JCC An Uncanned Inspirational Message, Not on Facebook

Because you guys deserve them too, even though you're reading something other than Facebook right now.

This comes from my eleven year old's essay about his first day in sixth grade. I should note he's running cross country for the first time, thus apparently the pothole thing. Anyway, conclusion: nailed it.

My life is about helping others, and this is how I fulfill myself, by teaching you this: Don't stop at the first pothole. Don't break down. Keep on going. The next day is beautiful. The next day is time for rebirth no matter what happened the day before. The next day is a newborn baby, smiling. You are that baby too, happy as ever. Keep on going...don't give up. Don't stop at those potholes.

me too. I do kind of want to ask him how he goes about helping people from inside Minecraft.

 

The first statement reminds me of the Teletubbies sun. But then I'm the sun. And I'm on fire. And it's burning and it hurts.

Regardless, your 11-year old knows how to make good words. Encourage that. Writing, even in professional settings, is very quickly becoming a lost craft.

Mixed metaphors aside (babies and potholes maybe don't make the smoothest metaphor imaginable), his message is inspirational. But his construction of the paragraph and use of punctuation is the most impressive element for me. It has a gorgeous flow to it.

 

I love the bumpy metaphors in this example. It has such a childlike cadence to it. Kids' thoughts bounce from one thing to the next: from potholes to newborn babies to that kid from school to potholes to Star Wars to video games to newborn babies. It reads so innocently.

 

I hate to brag but the whole essay rocks. It starts with this horrible awful moment of social rejection that turns out to be an anxiety dream sequence. It really took me back to my own sixth grade experience when those horrible awful moments of social rejection never ended up being dream sequences.

 

It's very Buddha.
