FANFICCER?S WEEKLY: ?To Spam or Not to Spam: What is the Question??
    Article by LaughingSock

The disaster of which you are about to read about occurred in an ordinary home to not-so-ordinary people. 1Yodimus_Prime, after weeks of procrastination, had produced the Board?s Silliest Story and had felt necessary to spam the Boards with it.

His mother, after extensive interviews, confessed that she?d had no idea what her son had been up to but had watched him sitting there biting his nails as he wrote for hours on end?

Dear readers, this story proved to be deadly.

At 1:00 a.m. eastern time, he was reported to have finished the Story. At 1:02 a.m., he was found laughing hysterically on the floor by a suspect known as correllian_ale. Before the man could be questioned by the other Mods, he was infected with the laughter.

This was just the beginning of the disaster. In a move that got them sent to a quarantined thread (which was, of course, locked for their- and everyone else?s- safety), they spammed the Social Thread with laughing icons and nonsensical jokes.

And that was how the World?s Silliest Story began. Through many a PM, The Story was finally given to the Mods. Everyone wanted a copy of it, but even us reporters at Fanficcer?s Weekly received a rejection PM.

After several stints in the quarantine thread, the Mods swiftly realized that anyone who read the story would need to be banned. They then went to Mod Squad to figure out what to do next.

Everyone, it seemed wanted to read The Story. Even oqidaun complained that ?My entire kriffing box was flooded with stupid PM?S from people wanting to read the Story. I ended up having to log off to get away from it all.?

We are still investigating who it was that leaked The Story to the public.

Finally, when it seemed that fanfiction was to be done away with forever, a solution was presented. The Story, in a confidential PM, was sent to the head of the College Student Writer?s Union to be studied by the experts.

First, they decided to conduct some hastily planned experiments- completely forgetting about the scientific method and the procedures they were supposed to be following- and decided to test its lethality by distance.

In the middle of a special thread generally privy to only Mods and us reporters, they tested the experiment on RK_Striker_JK_5, a willing subject.

The group had connected a laptop up to a projector, making careful sure that the projector was turned off. Dianethx and The_Face, who had gladly donated their spare time, hid behind a desk, occasionally peeking out.

Eagerly watching, we saw Jedi-Ant send a go-ahead PM saying that she was ready.

Once Blindman confirmed that he was also prepared, he sent a PM back to SithGirl132, who pressed the button to turn on the projector.

Though SithGirl132 still denies the rumors, she shrieked and ran for cover the moment the projector was working.

For a minute, nothing happened. RK_Striker_JK_5, standing a good fifty feet away, merely squinted and scrunched up his face as he tried to read the writing.

Dianethx is reported as having said, ?What?s going on??!? due to the fact that she had her eyes covered.

Apparently, nothing was happening. Finally, RK_Striker_JK_5 took his glasses off, cleaned them on his black shirt, and put them back on. Once more, he read? and snorted. He started laughing uncontrollably? and fell down onto the floor.

That was when all craziness broke loose. Not caring what harm it caused his health, 1YODIMUS_PRIME burst out of his hiding position screaming ?Quickly! Turn of the projector before we all die!?

    Indeed, The Story was fatal.

Then, disaster struck the Resource Thread in the form of a scantily-clad Anakin Skywalker banner, an issue that had only led to scrapping in the past but now caused a full-out conflict. To future generations, this became known as either the Great War of 2007 or the Silly War (that depended on if you were American or European). For a while, it seemed that the entire Boards was to be rent

    Onto a more serious note...

It has come to our attention that the fanficiton Boards seem to have lost its sense of humor. Angst seems to be the new trend but, since there has yet to discover a way to give e-doses of Prozac, something needs to be done to lighten the mood.

Because of this, we are suggesting that we make things more funny- and it beginning in this unfunny thread.

This humor thread shall be used to:
    1) Hold guided discussions
    2) Hold workshops to tickle everyone?s funny bones
    3) Have challenges
    4) Index humor stories
    5) And, of course, provide a place for talking about humor!

To keep it as easy as possible, we will do a rotation of activities- week one will have discussion questions posted, week two will have a new workshop, and week three will hold a challenge. In the week after that, we will start over with a new discussion. This will allow everyone to participate without feeling pressured. Even though each week will have a new activity, you are more than welcome to go back and catch up on older activities!

So, who can join this thread?

Anyone who wants to! You can be a seasoned humor writer ready to lend expertise? or perhaps someone wanting to improve their talents. If you have a hard time writing humor or have never written it before, this is the place for you!

    What is considered humor?

Humor is anything you find finny? or any piece that might tickle someone?s funny bone. There is only one stipulation- all humor pieces must follow TOS? and be in good taste. If you have any questions on that, PM one of the three users named below.

What kind of discussions will there be?

Firstly, we want to get an idea of who all has written humor, etc. We?ll also be looking for ways to help you but still make this a fun experience. In short, we want to help each and every one of you reach your potential when it comes to humor. Old discussion questions along with a handy link to each of them will be listed in the second post.

Workshops? What will we be doing?

These will be small but enjoyable activities that can be done in one sitting. They will help develop and expand your skills.

I have some humor stories I wish to have indexed here. How do I go about doing that?

We shall be compiling an index of humor stories for all the eras. We shall do our best to put all of the new humor stories into the index, but if you have an old one or a story that was overlooked, feel free to PM it to one of these three users: AnakinsFavorite, The Musical Jedi, or Laughing Sock. Do not post the information here in this thread- it will get cluttered!

The PM has to have all of this information in this format:
    Title:(Link and title of story)
    Author:
Board: (Tell which Board- Saga, Before, Beyond- it is located in)
    Characters:
    Summary:
Status: (Either a WIP- Work In Progress- Completed, or On Hiatus)

How do I win a challenge, and what do I win?

On the third week of the cycle, we will hold a challenge. During that time, you can write up a reply and post it in a reply in this thread. After the set deadline- which will be announced periodically- there will be a period of time in which everyone can vote via PM on which is their favorite. The winner will then be announced and given the privilege of helping chose the next challenge!

We hope this thread will be a lot of fun for you all, and we hope to see you around. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to PM!

    Let the silliness begin!

    Discussion Questions: Set #1

So, what genre of fanfiction do you usually write?

Although I?ve written just about everything, I prefer angst. Humor is hard to write sometimes, but I have a blast doing that too.

Have you ever written humorous fanfiction? If yes, please tell us about your experience (whether you enjoy writing it, how your readers responded, whether it came naturally or difficultly, etc.). If no, please tell us why you are now interested in writing it and why you haven?t done so before.

Oh, yes! :D I always try to be working on a humor fic to keep things writing fun in-between all the angst I do. My humor is usually very silly (and sometimes bizarre) but my readers seem to enjoy all the crazy stuff. A reader once told me that it was interesting to have had a peek inside my head- I really didn?t know what to say to that! [face_laugh]

I love writing humor- it allows all my crazy ideas to escape. There?s something neat about being able to make people laugh. Still, it?s hard- sometimes, I don?t feel like laughing or being funny? so it?s hard to come up with something silly when you?re not in the mood.

Do you enjoy reading humorous fanfiction? For those of you who read humor, who are your favorite authors? If you do not enjoy reading humor, why is it so?

Definetly! :D I love those silly stories that leave you giggling, especially ones you can go back and read over and over again and still laugh just as hard as you did the first time.

My favorite humor authors are Blindman and 1Yodimus_Prime. I have no idea where Blindman comes up with it all, but it is all brilliant! 1Yodimus_Prime has this totally crazy way of writing that is still hysterical even when you?re reading it half asleep early in the morning (and, oddly enough, it still makes sense [face_thinking]).

What would you like to see from this thread?

As a thread-mistress, I?d like to see everyone having a great time all the while enjoying all the benefits reading and writing humor has to offer!

First of all, I just want to say that AF did a fantastic job on the thread. =D= *whispers* She says that we did it together, but I was just a sounding board. The thread looks great!

So, what genre of fanfiction do you usually write?

I usually write in angst, especially as vignettes. I think that I spend far too much time being serious in my writing.

Have you ever written humorous fan fiction? If yes, please tell us about your experience (whether you enjoy writing it, how your readers responded, whether it came naturally or difficultly, etc.). If no, please tell us why you are now interested in writing it and why you haven?t done so before.

I've dabbled in the genre. I enjoyed writing the piece (it was a short story on drunken Obi-Wan with Anakin playing the straight man for once), and it made me want to write more. Like most of my writing, if I have a solid idea, humor comes relatively easy to me. If the idea is poor, then it's really difficult. Of course, having a good idea is usually the battle, isn't it? ;)

Do you enjoy reading humorous fan fiction? For those of you who read humor, who are your favorite authors? If you do not enjoy reading humor, why is it so?

I love reading humor! Sometimes you just want to kick back and have a good laugh. I am a huge fan of Blindman, especially his Vader Monologues. I also enjoy Drabba's posts, though that doesn't really qualify as "fan fiction." CYNICAL21 also has had some really hilarious segments in her writing, though you have to wade through the angst to find it.

What would you like to see from this thread?

As co-thread host, I hope to see people having fun and working on better humor writing. We need to address the discrepancy between angst and humor here on the boards. ;) I'd also like to see good discussion on the genre, as well as some new fics put up. Let's raise the funny awareness! :D

    Disussion Questions: Set #1

-If you are a writer, what genre of fanfiction do you usually write?

Pretty much anything: drama, humor, farce, angst, some romance.

-Have you ever written humorous fanfiction? If yes, please tell us about your experience (whether you enjoy writing it, how your readers responded, whether it came naturally or difficultly, etc.). If no, please tell us why you are now interested in writing it and why you haven?t done so before.

Oh gosh yes. The only problem was laughing so hard I couldn't type straight. It comes naturally, and the readers liked it (with one exception; one thought it was reverse sexism). I even got my first destroyed keyboard response!

-Do you enjoy reading humorous fanfiction? Heck yes! It's probably my favorite.

-What would you like to see from this thread? An explosion of humorous stories! Destroyed keyboards, bad typos from readers shaking so hard they can't hit the right keys.

I read the first post and nearly died. I so did not turn that projector on, and all accusations are false. Or at least that's what my lawyer is saying.

-If you are a writer, what genre of fanfiction do you usually write?

I write mostly angst, drama, and action. I guess I need an outlet for my darker emotions, and anyways, I write so much in LOTF and beyond that there's little but angst there...

-Have you ever written humorous fanfiction? If yes, please tell us about your experience (whether you enjoy writing it, how your readers responded, whether it came naturally or difficultly, etc.). If no, please tell us why you are now interested in writing it and why you haven?t done so before.

I've yet to write purposeful humor. I'd like to learn about humor to expand my writing skills and maybe get rid of a loose plot bunny or two.

-Do you enjoy reading humorous fanfiction? For those of you who read humor, who are your favorite authors? If you do not enjoy reading humor, why is it so?

I love reading humor! It's often the best way to get me out of the trap of LOTF angst and homework angst. Hmm...Jedi_of_Ennth wrote a great short story called "Heartbreak Hotel" that had me laughing. And there's the eternal "Fanfiction! The Musical" which has gotten me spitting beverages on the monitor. But the best humor of all was from cdmcc, "Hairdressers of the Force" "In the Lair of the Gilded Lily" "For Whom the Bell Pings" "From Here to Over There" "Where Did It All Go Wrong?" Probably the funniest thing I've ever read. I think I hurt something the first time I read those stories!

-What would you like to see from this thread?

Some information about writing humor and also maybe some reccomendations of good humorous stories.

-If you are a writer, what genre of fanfiction do you usually write?

Drama, some angst. I love reading humor, but I'm not that funny.

-Have you ever written humorous fanfiction? If no, please tell us why you are now interested in writing it and why you haven?t done so before.

Yes, a couple of times. It was hard, because I'm not like Face or Yod; it doesn't come that naturally to me. I think the readers thought it was funny, though (at least, I hope they did).

-Do you enjoy reading humorous fanfiction? For those of you who read humor, who are your favorite authors? If you do not enjoy reading humor, why is it so?

Oh yes, The_Face in particular comes to mind. Bracken Starblaster was probably the funniest thing I've ever read.

-What would you like to see from this thread?

    A funny time ;)

A good place to discuss humor fics and get tips on writing them; maybe a workshop or two.

-If you are a writer, what genre of fanfiction do you usually write?

I enjoy writing action or political thrillers, but I will admit to have dabbled in humor. I'm also mostly an OC guy.

-Have you ever written humorous fanfiction? If yes, please tell us about your experience (whether you enjoy writing it, how your readers responded, whether it came naturally or difficultly, etc.). If no, please tell us why you are now interested in writing it and why you haven?t done so before.

Again, I dabble. One of my first stories I posted was originally supposed to be a comedy, but it kinda mutated into pseudo-seriousness and the bizarre. The people that were reading said they though tit was funny, but then again, I think they were just being nice. After that, any comedy I've written has been relatively short, often with characters breaking the fourth wall.

-Do you enjoy reading humorous fan fiction? For those of you who read humor, who are your favorite authors? If you do not enjoy reading humor, why is it so?

Do I really need to answer? o_O Yes, I do, in fact, enjoy reading humor. I'd have to agree with NYCitygurl and say that my favorite was The_Face's "Bracken Starblaster - Space Attorney", although there are far too many great humor stories that to list them all here would be impossible.

-What would you like to see from this thread?

    I'd like some cake.:D

Okay, seriously, I would just like to improve my writing skills and also find an opportunity to laugh like an idiot.

If you are a writer, what genre of fanfiction do you usually write?

Interestingly enough, I started out with humor pieces. I've since moved on to drama and suspense.

Have you ever written humorous fanfiction? If yes, please tell us about your experience (whether you enjoy writing it, how your readers responded, whether it came naturally or difficultly, etc.).

I've written several humorous stories. I had a great time writing them and the readers seemed to enjoy it. Some went over better than others, mostly because, at the time, I was just writing humor and I got a little weary of it and it showed. It comes easily and naturally to me when I don't put pressure on myself to make it funnier or longer or try to meet a deadline.

For me, to truly enjoy writing humor, it has to be done lesiurely.

Do you enjoy reading humorous fanfiction? For those of you who read humor, who are your favorite authors? If you do not enjoy reading humor, why is it so?

I love reading humor! Who do I like to read.....hmmmmm....well a couple folks have left the boards, but VA_Parky, VaderLVR64 and dianethx wrote a hysterically funny storry recently called Attraction. I laughed through the whole thing!

What would you like to see from this thread?

More humor stories. Laughter is a great tonic for anything that ails you. :)

... okay, I'm going to admit something... something which may sound odd in light of the responses that I've been getting to one of my WIP's.

I have never intentionally written a humorous fanfic.

That's right. I hadn't considered that story a humor-fic. One can imagine my surprise, three chapters into it, when among the many "[face_laugh]" I had been getting that I received this comment: [qoute=PHGS_Weyr] That was great... i can not stop laughing[/quote]

    *shrugs*

-Do you enjoy reading humorous fanfiction? For those of you who read humor, who are your favorite authors? If you do not enjoy reading humor, why is it so?
i read, and read. Sometimes I enjoy humor, sometime sI don't. That said, I'm eagerly awaiting the next chapter to "Measure of a Man"

    A HUMOR THREAD??????????????? ALL RIGHT!!

-If you are a writer, what genre of fanfiction do you usually write?

I write just about everything (except those big epic battle fics...I just don't have the computer memory for them) but my very very favorite is.....HUMOR!

-Have you ever written humorous fanfiction?

Absolutley! As a matter of fact, I have to really try hard NOT to write humor. Even my mush comes out humorous...and my drama...and my angst...and my...well, you get the picture.

-Do you enjoy reading humorous fanfiction? For those of you who read humor, who are your favorite authors?

My all time favorite humor ff author is cdmcc. If you're never read his hilarious fics, go check them out in saga. I laugh so hard when I read his stuff, that I start to snort in a most unlady like fashion.

-What would you like to see from this thread?

Well, we had a humor thread a while back, but it died, so I'm really excited to see that a brand new shiney one is here. I guess I am thinking discussions and challenges would be very lovely...and gorgeous men feeding us girls grapes would be nice.

So, what genre of fanfiction do you usually write?

Amazingly enough, the majority of my fics are meant to be humorous. I'm actually quite e-shy, so only one of my works posted here is funny. Angst and drama are both close seconds.

Have you ever written humorous fanfiction? If yes, please tell us about your experience (whether you enjoy writing it, how your readers responded, whether it came naturally or difficultly, etc.). If no, please tell us why you are now interested in writing it and why you haven?t done so before.

Of course I have! I love making people laugh, especially through my writing. Writing humor comes naturally to me. I actually have trouble keeping deep fics serious. Generally, I've had good responses from readers.

Do you enjoy reading humorous fanfiction? For those of you who read humor, who are your favorite authors? If you do not enjoy reading humor, why is it so?

There's always more room for laughter in life. This includes fanfiction. I honestly don't have any favorite authors.

What would you like to see from this thread?

I'm way too easy going to answer this question. :p I have no opinion!

-If you are a writer, what genre of fanfiction do you usually write?

I typically write action/mystery fanfiction, but they always ? always ? include humor.

-Have you ever written humorous fanfiction? If yes, please tell us about your experience (whether you enjoy writing it, how your readers responded, whether it came naturally or difficultly, etc.). If no, please tell us why you are now interested in writing it and why you haven?t done so before.

    *buzz* What is ?yes?, Alex?

I?ve written three multi-post completely humor fics. The first was the second story I posted here, and had about one reader I think. It wasn?t very good. The second was one of my favorite plot bunnies I?ve ever had (the real Boushh hunts down Leia for framing him), and had good reception. Same with Braken Starblaster, Space Attorney: The Dark Darkness, apparently. :p Thanks and shout-out to readers for the mentions above by the way! [:D]

I really enjoy making people laugh. Those replies where a reader points out something in my post that struck them as funny, it?s one of my favorite compliments to get. ?Serious? fic or comedy, doesn?t matter. Makes me warm ?n? fuzzy. :D Matter of fact, writing something without humor is nigh impossible for me. I can only sustain an absolutely pitch black tone for a post or two. Personally, I don?t see any reason I should. Humor is a huge part of life, and can be included without compromising the dramatic weight of a story. In fact, I think the right kind of humor can even enhance a tragic section of prose.

-Do you enjoy reading humorous fanfiction? For those of you who read humor, who are your favorite authors? If you do not enjoy reading humor, why is it so?

I definitely enjoy a good humor fic. It can be an awesome form of escapism and even turn your whole day around. My favorite humor writer on the boards is probably 1Yodimus_Prime (subliminalmessageupdatePlanetHoppingsubliminalmessage). He has an excellent understanding of comedic timing and how to pace out how you read an update. Plus, a knack for the absurd. I?ve also enjoyed the character-based humor of Luton_Plunder and talkingbanana.

Beyond TFN, I enjoy Douglas Adams, Dave Barry, Jasper Fforde, and a bunch I?m forgetting.

-What would you like to see from this thread?

Discussion of humor types, techniques, etc. etc. A good index of all the awesome humor on the boards. Challenges to increase the quantity of aforementioned humor. Oh and Good Times.*

    Hahahahahaha...hahaha...haha...heh?

-If you are a writer, what genre of fanfiction do you usually write?

Drama, angst, some action. Whatever gets me through the day...*hiccup*

If no, please tell us why you are now interested in writing it and why you haven?t done so before.

I've never written in the funny genre, but I have always peppered everything I write with some sort of hilarity to take a way from constant tension. A purely humorous fic from me would contain too many TOS violations. Then I run the chance some won't find it funny at all.

-Do you enjoy reading humorous fanfiction? For those of you who read humor, who are your favorite authors? If you do not enjoy reading humor, why is it so?

Oh yeah. Face's Braken Starblaster immediately comes to mind (because the past three people have already said it) And Yodimus has a great ESB redux nicknamed the "retarded squirrel" that's hilarious, along with a couple of other fics that make feel like you're tripping...

-What would you like to see from this thread?

Something that doesn't place me in the vacinity of dead bodies...
