So the new Jabba's Palace song from the Special Edition of RotJ is called "Jedi Rocks".

    -Is that its in-universe name?

-If so, isn't it weird to have a song about Jedi during Imperial times? Especially one so rockin'? Especially in the throne room of a guy who was just threatened by someone claiming to be a Jedi?

-Also, why "Rocks", when according to Wookieepedia the in-universe name for this genre of music is "Jizz"? Shouldn't the song be called "Jedi Jizzes"?:p

So far, all I can come up with is that it's a song about a Jedi being crushed to death by some rocks.

    :-B:p

Yeah, it's a terrible name. I'm assuming it's an out-of-universe name, but it doesn't make any sense either way... especially in-universe.

Out-of-universe it makes sense, I guess, because it's a "rock" song in a film often abbreviated as "Jedi".

The title refers to lightsaber crystals. The lyrics were meant to convey both danger and beauty.:)

    [face_laugh]=D=

The song's still worse than Lapti Nek, though.:p

I thought it wasn't possible to make a Sy Snootles more fake looking than the original puppet. I was proven wrong. And don't even get me started on the alien Joe Cocker.:p

    And possibly some Force-user innuendo!

I guess it was probably a ten-second conversation:

Lucasfilm person A: "Hey, what should we call this new rock song for Jedi at Jabba's palace?"
Lucasfilm person B: "Geez, I don't know... 'Jedi Rocks'?"
Lucasfilm person A: "Works for me."

    Out of universe.

I wished that the "Jedi Rocks" scene was out of universe. :p

The title of the song is meant to refer to Palpatine's in-universe propaganda that the Jedi were on crack.

"Rocks" is also a slang word for testicles. So, in light of Luke's pre-recorded spectral threat, Jabba is literally saying, "Balls to you, Jedi!"; hence, the song is also something of a threat (indeed, the rag-tag Skywalker clan is sentenced to death, at Jabba's behest, and almost cast into a living orifice resembling a specific manifestation of trans-cultural fears of women (i.e., vagina dentata)). Notably (or not), it's also a female singer delivering the lead vocals, in a lively, mocking style, while a male companion singer fills in with an affected wail. If one looks at it in this way, the song is actually pretty disturbing; square it up with the galactic-wide execution of the Jedi during Order 66, and their own political apathy that led up to it (including slavery on Tatooine), and here with have a seemingly-untouchable crime lord reveling in their impotency and their demise, and maybe enjoying the prospect that there is yet an impudent Jedi or two to still have their assets removed. It's either that, or as already speculated upon, a smuggled-in reference to cocaine; which wouldn't be out-of-the-ordinary in a den of iniquity like Jabba's Palace. Both of these make more than a measure of sense: the saga is awash with allusions to genitalia and drugs. I'm going with the former in this instance, however; it seems to operate on more levels. So much for the oft-repeated claim that these are "kids'" movies; on the other hand, fairy tales are often incredibly dark and twisted, with oodles of violence and sexual repression (which is its own kind of violence, if you think about it), so it may just be simple hubris that causes an adult mind to reject what it egotistically considers to have advanced beyond.

It's because whatever blithering idiot actually named it has zero imagination & no one at LFL had the time to go through various bureaucratic processes to stomp on it for the cheap, moronic, half-witted, even less-than-generic 'Star Wars' moniker that it is.

The thread was basically a rhetorical question, wasn't it? Depressing to think that the musical number was actually even worse than its title...

Out-of-universe, I think it's also Lucas simply saying, "ROTJ Rocks", with a capital "r"! ROTJ is often shortened to "Jedi", and it's the first of the six SW movies that came in for heavy criticism from the series' own fans, so I think he's hitting back here, somewhat. The fact that he adds these words into the mythology of the film as the title to an eccentric song that has riled many people up only makes it funnier. ROTJ Rocks, people.

No, no, it's nerdcore. It's a reference to an old hologame wherein in one scene, you have to find a Jedi to lift some huge boulders so you can pass through the canyon, which, since the films are set "a long time ago", makes it the first broken bridge!

    I like this theory. :D

Jedi couldn't actually do telekinesis. They just thought they could when they were high.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm guessing they'd do that sort of thing when it comes to things that don't have that much importance?

I am convinced "jizz music" was their way of Getting Crap Past The Radar. You know, back in the Bantam days, we actually had a radar, right?
