No need to replace Chewie or the Droids.

Although 11-4D would be a great reveal.

Really enjoyed that one. Even more excited to have Andy involved in some capacity in VII. Can't wait to see what sort of performance he puts in be it CGI, live action, or even puppet?

Not the droids, they'll go on and on... that is if Lucasfilm continue to tell the story "through their eyes"

However, since the Big 3 will supposedly be bowing out either in Epoisode VII or at some point in the ST, it is likely that Chewbacca will also be retired.

Also, I didn't mean they'd "replace" Chewie so much as introduce a new main character who is an alien, would be a companion to one of the younger characters, like Chewie is to Han.

I also didn't mean to suggest that Chewy or the droids would be replaced in VII. They all could easily continue on together with any new alien and droid characters throughout the ST. However, if Disney plans on continuing the series down the road with Episode X until whenever, I can see these iconic characters eventually being retired, especially with the deaths of our beloved actors.

I definitely see Boyega, Daisy and any other surviving characters returning after the ST. It may never end.

for what it's worth, the beard is gone...could point to his role being just a mocap one (unless of course he hadn't filmed anything yet and has shaved it for filming....lol)

Or he just felt like cleaning himself up a bit :)

I don't believe facial hair affects motion capture - I've seen behind the scenes footage of LotR, Hobbit and Apes and he often has beard while performing, if I am recalling correctly.

that's what I was getting at, some people thought the beard was for an on screen role, but the fact he's shaved it off probably means he's just doing mocap.

I saw "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and Andy is just too good as Ceaser. Can't wait to see what's he's cooking up for us.

Nah, you don't get a class act like Max von Sydow and not put him on the screen.

This man is literally changing film making with his brilliant motion capture performances. He's perfect for the world of Star Wars:

he's a great on screen actor and i'm very familiar with his methods from the lotr extended editions/ bts footage but what i'd really love to see is a gollum/kong/ape photoreal mo-cap character similar to chewie or maybe a baddie. they could improve on what they started with jar jar in ep 1, having a digital character that the audience completely invests in as just another person. like chewie moving among the other actors in the falcon.

I posted this in the Practical vs CGI thread as well.

    http://makingstarwars.net/2014/08/p...l-best-star-wars-film-little-digital-effects/

“J.J. Abrams-directed Episode VII “will be the best Star Wars film I will have seen.” Mayhew added the film will utilize no, or very little, computer generated effects and will instead be very practical."

Could Andy Serkis and his team be providing the movements for practical aliens and monsters? I'm starting to think so. Movement is alot of their work.

That's an interesting thought: using Serkis' team for their movements under costumes rather than mo-cap.

While Serkis is really good as fully cgi characters, I'd like to see him play something that's a combination of cgi and costume like Pan in Pan's Labyrinth

Really I'd just like to see more characters like that in general. lol

You mean the Faun? Pan was the girl. And I believe it was all practical.

Edit: You were right there was some CG on the faun.

If I remember rightly from the original cast meeting, Andy was busy reading a script. His mo cap company may have other involvement in the effects in VII, but as for Andy himself? I think it's a certainty he will be playing the part of a cgi character. Otherwise why have him in the pic reading a script? Makes sense to me..
