if you're not fascinated by the sexual characteristics and mating practices of animals... i just dont know what to tell you. i think these topics are fascinating, so i have created a megathread for the discussion of sex characteristics and practices in the animal kingdom. please feel free to bring up cool animal sex facts at your leisure. ill start us off

giant squid penises act like a rivet gun. fruit flies have the largest sperm cells. barnacles have the largest penis in relation to body size (they get up to some tentacle porn hentai ****). smaller male cuttlefish have been known to "crossdress" by tucking their tentacles and flanges in order to sneak past a bigger (and apparently dumber) male and gain access to their harem... i can go on like this for days, mostly about sea creatures (i spent a couple weeks on a dive boat that had a massive tome about invertibrate ocean animal sex in its library and it became a favorite between-dive read for me)

but lets have something to discuss, shall we? to that end, here's a bunch of text copied from the wikipedia page on bonobos, our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom:

in conclusion, bonobos love to ****. they do it face to face and more often than not, purely for pleasure, even when reproduction is impossible. their entire species is bisexual and polyamorous

The researcher responsible for propagating almost all that crap about bonobos has literally never seen a wild specimen in his entire life.

Wocky is right. We can't conclude that these are the normal actions of the entire species. The bonobos studied were probably part of some new age hippie sect of bonobos; there was probably some kind of weird craigslist ad asking for bonobo volunteers to participate in an orgy study.

As I prepare my definitive tome to summarize all aspects of human behavior, society and existence, I plan to make observations only of inmates at Rikers Island Prison, New York. Because if you want to see how an organism behaves naturally, there's no better method than caging them in a high stress, abnormally small enclosure with a bunch of strangers for years on end, and then forcing occasional interactions with weirdos that wield strange power over them. Perfect.

does being trapped in the jcc (i.e a high stress, abnormally small enclosure with a bunch or strangers for years on end) explain why you are the way you are, wocky?

i assume you're referring to de waal and ur just pissed because he wrote a book recently about bonobo morality in which he rejected the idea that religion is necessary for morality to exist. afaik de waal has indeed relied on captive primates in his studies, but he's building off the work of other primatologists, most notably takayoshi kano, who observed homosexual behaviour and promiscuity and the like among bonobos in the wild back in the 80s and 90s

i dont understand why it matters that the guy who "propagated" the information hasnt seen a wild specimen, as long as data has been collected on wild specimens that corroborates his ideas. certainly it would not matter to the broad strokes of the information, ie that bonobos like to ****, are polyamorous, and bisexual, and have never been observed to pair-bond (monogamy)

So, bonobos are sex-persons (sex-primates?). No wonder Wocky disapproves.

Well, I would never have even imagined sleeping straight on the floor, unless a JCer had first shown the way. So yes.

I am indeed referring to De Waal, though I don't keep close track of his publications and certainly wasn't aware of anything like what you describe. My problem is that he systematically propagates a popular vision of this species that is wrong. For instance, a key part of his theories, as I've understood them, is not just that bonobos are very sexually active. It is that this hyper-sexuality functions to sublimate violent impulses. Concordant with this view, he constantly downplays violence in bonobo societies. However, insofar as I am aware, bonobos are about as violent as chimpanzees, and engage in the same sorts of intra- and inter-communal violence.

Some data from the wild corroborates some of his ideas. But some contradicts it. And just as importantly, he's a bit overeager to parlay things over into a grand, anthropromorphized vision of utopia that no data set could ever possibly support. It's stupid.

It's not a conspiracy. People in primatology are aware of where he's coming from, and can appreciate his contributions to the field while filtering out what they find unreasonable. I'm just trying to make sure that you, Rogue Number Ten, a well-informed individual who is not a primatologist, is aware that you should look at his work with caveats.
