Animated icons.

Considering a animated reply bar is allowable, Im forced to ask why not take another look at animated icons, as long as they are within an allowable filezise and arnt seizure enducing.

And if these were allowed, Im sure many better ones wouled be made.

 

Could we have ones that don't look really...er...bad? Because I couldn't stand a thousand newbies all with badly-drawn animated characters holding flickering lightsabers.

 

Meh, thats just what I happend to have uploaded allready.

If it was allowed, good ones would certainly be made. (I would have made new ones, but Im on a new PC and dont have any animation software DLd yet)

 

We're here to talk to people, not to be constantly distracted by flickering icons. The animated emoticons are bad enough.

The main reason I came here in the first place was because it was one of the only message boards that wasn't full of gigantic picture signatures, massive animated emoticons and annoying animated avatars. It's a nice place to look at. Let's keep it that way.

 

It's been discussed before, and the answer has always been no.

1) they are annoying
2) their file sizes are bigger (typically 4 or 5 times) so 50 animated GIFs would be about 1.25Mb (50x25k, presuming 50posts per page with 50 different animated gifs)
3) they look terrible (not your ones, just in general)
4) did I mention how annoying they are ?

 

They could quite easily be done very subtle and apropiate, such as taking your R2 icon and making lights flash on it.


Fact is, Im on 56k and on fourms that allow 100x100 animated icons I dont have a problem (unless someone has one of those 2MB animated sig pics, but the mods there catch those quick and replace em with goatse usualy)

 

I don't want flashing light thanks.

So, on your 56k you'd be happy to download 1.25Mb of images per page ? In addition to the banner, the ads and all the text ?

p.s. did I mention they are annoying ?

 

If theyre done well, therye not annoying.

And not ALL icons would be animated if animated ones were allowed.


90x30 icons are allowed, but not all icons are 90x30.

30x90 icons are allowed, but not all icons are 30x90

And havent you heard of cacheing ? That greatly speeds up things after the first time.

 

So you're suggested a 25x25 animated GIF ? I'm sure that would look great

And if I had to wait 10 minutes for one page to load there wouldn't be a second time.

I've said my bit, and stated my opinion, and I'm pretty sure that nothing is going to change.

 

Im not saying allow innumerous animated icons, however occasional ones would be quite enjoyable.

I don't support them either.

I am on dial up, and while ONE animated small gif might not be that big of a deal, 50 of them is absurd to have to load the first time. and with the rate some people change icons....

Anyways I really like that this board controls the icons.

And truth be told, I am so conventional that I am not even that big of a fan of widescreen ot other formats. I can see how they are artistic and stuff (and some turn out AWESOME), but i don't use them personally. Good old 50x50 does it fine for me.

Annoying = Animated icons where no animated icons have gone before.

 

They would drive me batty and take forever for my system to load a page. Imbedded images and the banners can be hard enough it.

Also, know how annoying the banner adds can be with their flickering and flashing text images? This would be far worse because you couldn't hide them as you scrolled down to read the text AND there is no ad blocker for them.

 

I agree with everyone here. Animated icons that move a lot are annoying and distracting. And small things, like "R2's lights flashing" would be a complete waste and needlessly lengthen an already lengthy (on my crappy 56k, *sob*) loading time.

 

As someone who makes animated images, they can bloat up in size pretty fast. And a ton of them on one page is an aesthetic nightmare!
