I saw in the poll that the blue Senate dress was the least favorite!

Well, although I must confess it's not my favorite either - mine is the battle dress - it does come second on my list!

So here, to promote the blue Senate dress, I give you the song:
"Blue Senate Dress"
set to the tune of "Blue Suede Shoes"

*******************************

Well it's a-five in the palace
Five on Naboo
Five with the Queen
They're the royal crew

But don't you
mess with my blue Senate dress
Well you can do anything
but don't you mess
with my blue Senate dress

Well you can take me along
or leave me in Theed
drag me to fights
till Naboo is freed

We can do any task
that's us five - no less
But oh oh honey
don't mess with that dress

And don't you
mess with my blue Senate dress
Well you can do anything
but don't mess
with that blue Senate dress

Hey, That is great Sergé Eisenstein. Belt it out with the best of them (mainly Piett)

aaahhhhh, a harmonious symposium.

In addition to the handmaiden meaning question posed to the floor for open discussion by The honorable RHS delagate, Réka, I submit this piece of literary information obtained from The Random House Webster's College Dictionary, 2nd Edition, 1997 for Eirtaé:

emir n 1. a prince, commander, or head of state in some Islamic countries. 2. a title of honor of the descendants of Muhammad. 3. (Cap) the former title of the ruler of Afghanistan. 4. a title of certain Turkish officials.

emirate n 1. the office or rank of an emir. 2. the state or territory of an emir.

And did you know there is a republic in NE Africa called Eritrea? That just hits way to close to home for me. It is like Dé Ja Vué (sp) to me personally. You can not possibly begin to imagine how close to home this all begins to hit. No wonder GL chose Eirtaé for the name of the captain of the Royal Handmaidens...Red One ducks the spoiled fruit coming his direction...Search your feelings, you know this to be true...Duck,...Red One jumps off podium...runs away...

Réka -- excellent initiative! It's time to get down to our serious studies, indeed . . .

Hmmmm. Names. I wish I could find some unifying source for the HM names -- like they're Pig-Latin or something. But no such luck.

What was the language out of which came the name "Padmé"? Sanskrit? Hernault, was that Aurebesh also? Perhaps the other names came from the same language.
Yané, Sabé, Padmé, Om

"Sabé" as a derivative of "Elisabeth"?!! (Lt. P goes into a strange fit of minor conniptions). Aggghhhh. Go figure.

You see, the name "Elizabeth" and its variants have been a constant factor in my life, like something running underground, breaking surface once in a while usually in the form of a Beth. (There have been several).

{{**sigh**}} So I'm not surprised that it followed me here! Ahhh, Sabé: I knew you before I knew of you.

QG'sP -- intriguing! What is your source for such name-meanings?

As for Eirtaé -- well, I did find the Norse Goddess Eir, whose specialty was Healing. Does our HM have a penchant for the healing arts? What say you, Fan-Fictioneers? Red One, Senior Eirtaéologist -- what do you think? Not that there was anything in TPM to suggest that, but wouldn't it make sense, that among Amidala's inner circle is one well-versed in Physick. Interesting Norse-mytho-related note: Friday of course is named for Freya, another Norse Goddess.

Darth Happy! Good to, uh, get a postcard from your caregivers! I guess the electroshock therapé wasn't taking . . .

Mani -- née Moriah -- ah, Welcome! Well, for the Male HM-Equivalent, valet seems to be the most appropriate term. The opinion of http://www.dictionary.com http://www.dictionary.com :

1. A man's male servant, who takes care of his clothes and performs other personal services.

Sounds like a HM duties to me!

Squires I think were usually beholden to certain Knights -- not the Royalty. Help with the armor, fetch the horse, etc.

Page strikes me as being more of a gopher for the whole court -- a runner, a messenger . . . I was once a Page, under the employ of a public library!

Sergé -- rock 'n' roll!

*************** Official RHS Pronouncement *****************

I hereby appoint Sergé Eisenstein as RHS Poet Laureate. Come get your Laurels (but do not rest upon them!):

On the topic of names-

While searching one day, I saw "Sabe" as "The one who knows." Very appropriate and my personal favorite.

Here's an interpretive profile I found one day too. It's already been posted on TheFabFive, so forgive if you've read it there.

---------------------------------------------
The site this comes from is http://www.kabalarians.com/gkh/yourbaby.htm http://www.kabalarians.com/gkh/yourbaby.htm

Sabe (And Rabe)
Your name of Sabe makes you very idealistic and generous, with the strong desire to uplift humanity leading you into situations where you can express your desire to serve others. You want to assume responsibilities and to look after people; however, you can become too involved in other people's problems and tend to worry. Your name gives you a natural desire to express along artistic and musical lines. You desire a settled home and family life, and are expressive and attentive to your loved ones. You must be careful not to become possessive and jealous of those close to you, however, as you could attract losses and unfortunate experiences. If you attach an ideal of service to your life, you could find great happiness and could express a very beautiful, happy, responsible, artistic, and generous nature. The weakness of this name is in worry, which in turn affects the nervous system, creating a tendency to be highly strung or over-sensitive to the thoughts of others.

Padme
Your first name of Padme has given you a responsible, expressive, inspirational, and friendly personality. Expression comes naturally to you and you are rarely at a loss for words; in fact, you have to put forth effort at times to curb an over-active tongue. Self-confidence has made it easy for you to meet people and you are well-liked for your spontaneous, happy ways. You sincerely like people and do not often experience loneliness; your work and home-life are likely filled with association. You enjoy music and could have a fine singing voice; however, the study could be somewhat difficult because you do not find it easy to apply yourself to concentrated study for long periods. In this respect, this name is not altogether constructive; it creates a somewhat scattering influence which makes it difficult for you to finish what you start. This name brings disappointments and emotional involvements through being too sympathetic and easily influenced. As a result of your active nature, you have an appetite for quick-energy foods, which you could consume to excess. Health weakness appear as skin conditions, or as ailments relative to the liver.
--------------------------------------------

Also, one of my listmembers who does not post here is getting a profile done on all the names and she will post to the list in a couple of weeks or so.

Cheers,
Amy

Wow! Even more insightful information.....and I had been trying to remember the name of that country that looks like Eirtaé, too!

I can't believe Piett missed CrescentJedi's mention of Keira clone's new-found feelings for him.....ah well, perhaps he just doesn't have the same fascination for Keira as he once does. <EG>

GentleBant: forgive me for "taking" your topic; apparently, my sister isn't the only person whose mind I can read.

I was hoping to find a common thread between the origins of all the names, and for a while it was working: Sabé, Rabé, and Yané can all be considered to be derivatives of names ending in "ella": Isabella, Arabella, Janella. But the Yané one is already forcing the issue, and neither Eirtaé nor Saché can be made to fit the pattern--at least not that I can find. So much for that idea.

Any other ideas?

Sorry, but I am so overcome with joy at this moment that I have absolutely nothing to say that is the least bit constructive. I was going to contribute to the conversation on names, but I forgot what I was going to say. Oh well. I'll think of it later, I'm sure.

Okay, I just remembered. According to my younger sister, this year, my old high school has a German exchange student who's last name just happens to be Rabe. So, I started wondering if maybe some of these first names were based on Surnames of friends and family members of Lucas and the others involved in the naming process. I couldn't find any definate surname meanings or anything, but...

Saché:
SACHEVERELL- dweller at the roebuck forest. (Ironically, this name gives the first clue as to what my surname stands for, as I cannot find it in any dictionary of names... go fig.) Anywho, I admit that this is a long shot... I'm inclined to agree that it most likely involves the Russian Diminutive form of Alexander: Sacha.

The surname of Rabe could be a variant of either of these two:
RABAN- raven.
RABY- dweller at the deer's place.
My vote lies with RABY as it is of German origen.

Of course, we all know where Padmé came from.

I like the idea of Yané being originated from Yanni. (Isn't that right, Yanni! of Naboo Tee Hee.)

Interestingly enough: Yan is a french form of John. So, could Yané be the equivalent of Joni/Jonie?

I'm completely stumped as far as Sabé and Eirtaé go, however.

Well, I'm outta time. Later.

Interesting ideas on the names of HMs. I read in a thread somewhere that Padme came from something Tibetan meaning something important . Perhaps GL simply gave all the HMs names ending in é. I hope, however, that he did actually give them meanings based on word described above.

Anywé (I finally discovered how to do é! and it can be done with alt 130 or alt 2178. they should be our official numbers ) I was also thinking about serious discussion, and I thought about making an Official Handmaiden Guide. It would have an intro section explaining the HMs, actresses playing them, the whole Keira/Natalie confusion that grips many non-RHSers. Then a section detailing each scene the HMs are in, and where they specifically are. Perhaps even a section explaining other things, like the symbolism of their dresses, or possible meanings of their names, and so on.

For example: In scene so-and-so, the Queen talks with Palpatine in his quarters before her Senate appearance. Eirtae is on her right, and Rabe is on her left. No sign of Sabe. None of the handmaidens move throughout the scene. (note: this is all made-up, I just picked some random example)

Friday night, when I don't have any homework, I will go through my Insider's Guide and pick out all the scenes involving the handmaidens. Then I will list them and we can debate where everyone is. Some of the controversial scenes, such as the celebration scene and the throne room, will probably only be solved by watching the video over and over when it comes out. Still, I am confident with so many handmaiden experts here, we can do it.

So, what does everyone think?

Hello all.

Once again we are getting down to some discussion about the Royal Five (ie. the orgin of their names). To this debate, I don't have much to say, all the possible origins of the names of the Handmaidens are interesting. I have done a little research on the subject, but nothing really worth while.

As to the discussion about what the male version of a Handmaiden would be name, Mani I know Valet does not sound as good as Handmaiden, it is most likely the male version. Piett beat me to the discussion about the other names you listed (he seems to have beaten me to several clarifications on many diffrent threads recently) but I was basicly going to say what he did. Personally, I belive that the importance of Valets would be down played with a male monarch. In our previous hall (v5.0) somewhere around page 21 or 22, this discussion first appeared. I pointed out that the Handmaidens serve as a peer group for the young queen, giving her a group of confidants and trusted friends. With male royalty, at least in the real world, such peers would be given individual positions with in the court, such as Captian of the Guard or Mayor of Theed. Not to say that Amidala did not have any say in appointing these posts, but most of the positions held on Naboo shown in the movie appear to be men, so it seems to follow real world royalty somewhat.

Yoshi you plan to create a guide to the Handmaidens sounds like a worthwhile pursuit.

Hello everyone!!

Lt. Piett I'm glad you enjoyed Kiera's performace in Oliver Twist!

Mani, life as a Handmaiden will not be easy..but it will be rewarding. Say hi to Moriah when you can.

Yoshi, what a wonderful idea! I look forward to your results.

Red One, yes I did know about the country called Eritrea. GL must have a thing going for Northern Africa. Naboo=Nubian theMarie Celeste)=Nubia the rival country of Egypt in ancient times. Of course he films his desert scenes in Tunisia..hummmm. *scratches head*

Oh and Red One, I think the Sabéologists will have something to say to you about just who is the real "captain" of the Royal Handmaidens.

ooooh .. the meaning of the Handmaiden's names, excellent topic Réka. I just happened to have checked out a book on character names from my local library a couple of days ago. Let's see what I can dig out of it...some of these might be stretching it a bit, but hey this was fun!

Sabé
Saba: from Sheba. (Greek)
Sabah: born in the morning (Egyptian)
Sabana: from the open plain (Spanish)
Sabir: Patient (Arabic)

Rabé
Rabah/Reba: fourth born (Hebrew)
Rabi: breeze or spring (Arabic)
Rabiah: born in the spring (Egyptian)

Yané
Yannis: gift from God (Hebrew)
Yanisin: ashamed (Navajo)
Yanamari/Yanamaria: bitter grace (Basque/Spanish)

Eirtaé
Erianthe/Eriantha/Erianthia: sweet (Greek)
Eirica: ruler (Scottish)

Saché
Sach: a Welsh legend name
Sacha/Sasha/Sashenka: defender of man (Russian)
Sachi: descended from the sun god (myth name from India)
Sakari: sweet (India)

It's snowing!!!!!!!! Yay!!! So, long as it doesn't snow on Sunday, when I go back to school, I'm happy. (Hmm, just killed two birds with one stone there.)

And Happy Birthday to the people with birthdays. <G>

Anywho, Yoshi, Padme means "lotus". Here's the quote from TF.N's vastly out-of-date Episode 1 Character Outline of Queen Amidala:

I came across a phrase: "Om Mani Padme hum," which immediately caused me to sit upright and start asking incessantly, "what does it MEAN?!?!?" So I did some searching on the internet. It turns out that Om Mani Padme hum is a Buddhist mantra It translates approximately as "the Jewel is in the Lotus," and is a reference to the Buddha's flower sermon. The Buddha didn't actually speak at the flower sermon, he just held up a Lotus and the guy who understood what he meant became his successor. Anyway, Padme means "Lotus." The Lotus is a holy symbol to Tibetan Buddhists, but I was unable to determine just what it represents, although I got the impression that it had to do with "purity." Nevertheless, I thought this was interesting tidbit that you might appreciate, if you didn't already know."

Anywho, I talked to my sister and her "German" exchange student friend. Why the quotes with "German", you may ask? Well, because the girl is actually Portuguese... she just later moved to Germany. (Which makes sense... Manuela didn't sound like a German name to me). Anywho.... drum roll please....

Rabe actually means "Raven".

It's an idea that I actually like. Seems fitting that KCdS's charater should be named Raven.

So, we have a Lotus and a Raven for sure... A bird and a flower.... anyone else coming up with a pattern?
