So does anyone have any plans for Hallowe'en yet? I'm sorta thinking about doing a costume, but I generally suck at creativity and such. Also, I'm not yet sure what parties are going on where, but I guess I'll find out more as the day approaches.

What type of Costume are you looking into?? I suggest asking our Club's Costuming Director Sister_Sola (Cassie) to help you out or for some insights....

Im trying to fix my trooper armor (after my brother sends it over from Vancouver that is) for Chiller here in NYC. I will be hanging out with MEPA (NY FanForce). I think they will be having Peter Mayhew as a drinking buddy.. SO that will be cool for sure.

Hey Phill, some party is better than no party, right?

Antonio, hanging out with Peter Mayhew, whoa dude when you drop names you really drop names! That is sooo freakin' cool.

For my costume (if I do one), I will want it to be as simple as possible; meaning I don't want to have to do any actual work or spend a lot of money. ;) I'll probably browse a few of the thrift stores in town to see what they've got available. It likely won't be a Star Wars themed costume though, as there aren't any that I'm really interested in doing.

When you call me, please call me Cassandra :)

As it's already October, which includes being out of town for Thanksgiving, the only time I've got for assisting would be in helping generate ideas, and where to find it quickly and cheaply. If you want something made for next year, send me a PM. :D

My weekends are all already booked from now to CIII, then I'll barely have 3 months before Dragon*Con....

Hey y'all! Just dropping in for a few minutes to say hi.

I'm being a courtesan for Hallowe'en from Moulin Rouge. I've never really had a nice costume before so I spared no expense this time around. I'm really proud of it. I went around to a few places and bought varies parts of dance-like costumes and pieced them together to make quite the awesome costume. When I "officially" unveil it for my friends (and school) I'll put up some pictures.

Actually, I take back what I said earlier, there is one character from Star Wars that would be cool to dress up as, and that would be Quinlan Vos from the Republic comic series. He just looks so darn cool, especially in his current dark-sider outfit. But I would have to get one massively large wig for me to pull that off as there's no way I'd be able to grow that much hair! Maybe this will be something for me to think about for next year.

Cassandra, I looked at some of the costumes you had linked in your sig and they look fantastic! I can't imagine how much time and skill it took you to make all of those outfits. Wow.

Azeria_Jade, a Hallowe'en party at school eh? I remember those - well actually I don't, but I can pretend to remember them. Regardless, your costume sounds like it's really cool, be sure to show it off to everyone.

EDIT: Oh, how markups mock me so.

    Thanks darkhelmet!

Wow, Azeria I can't wait to see your MR costume! I'm glad you were able to pull it together, and I'm sorry I wasn't able to be more help.

    Looking forward to seeing it!

I made a one piece CSA astronaut suit from those clean suit window cleaner weared when they worked. With lots of help of my trusted duck-tapes. I also made and name tag and a mission patch for it... LOL... it turns out pretty good and cost me less then $10 ;)

Hey Richard, that sounds pretty cool. So what exactly is the CSA? I'm assuming you're not referring to the Canadian Standards Association since I don't think they have astronaut suits. ;)

Right now it looks like the Commodore Ballroom's Hallowe'en Masquerade Ball is my best bet for November Eve. Now all I've got to do is scare up some friends to join me... get it? "Scare up." Man, I'm so punny. [face_laugh]

I have a Hallowe'en party at my friend's place on Saturday. Sunday is a time for meditation and renewal since it is Samhain.

Ah, I see Hallowe'en, for you, is actually a meaningful holiday. Are you a practicing Wiccan then?

Hmm, interesting. I'm curious, since (I believe) Samhain is one of the major Wiccan holidays, how do you react to the commercialisation of the day into what it is today? As many Christians worry about a similar thing occuring for their major holiday, Christmas; I would assume that some Wiccans (or witches - are these terms interchangable?) would react the same. Is this true?

Well, you can't really change anything. The commercialism is too established for most of the major holidays now. Personally I think more awareness for what Samhain stands for should be raised. I mean, yeah Christmas is pretty commercial (Presents! Yay!) but at least everyone knows this is when Christians celebrate the birth of Christ. I have yet to meet anyone who knows that Hallowe'en is more then just "Yay! Candy!". Schools do make an effort to raise awareness about Christian holidays, can't they do the same for others?

If I can scrape the $80 together for the mask, I'm gonna be Michael Myers, and my friend will be Laurie Strode from "Halloween"

    Classic!

Fixer, that is classic; Jamie Lee Curtis is the scream queen. How many Halloween movies are they up to now?

[Azeria_Jade]: "I have yet to meet anyone who knows that Hallowe'en is more then just "Yay! Candy!". Schools do make an effort to raise awareness about Christian holidays, can't they do the same for others?"

I must admit, I'm quite ignorant of religions other than the one in which I was raised (Christianity). From an educational point of view, it would be useful for schools to familiarize students with multiple religions; especially in a country like ours. But from a political point of view, it would probably be a difficult thing for many people to accept - unfortunately.

They're up to ten or so, I think, but they should have stopped after Halloween 2. Everything after was pointless and less scary.

See, with the first two, you wonder "wow, he's unstoppable! Is he, like, a ghost, a demon, a simple butchering maniac? It's just more scary when you're not sure...

And Jamie Lee Curtis is awesome! Great actress, and gorgeous.
Sad about Jamie's mother, Janet Leigh, passing away...

That's right, Janet Leigh died just recently too; I remember hearing about that. She was the woman in the original Psycho, another film franchise which should have stopped much earlier than it did. I don't think I've seen the original Halloween movie, just one of the more recent ones, and was very disappointed.

I love scary movies. It's interesting how they either suck the big one or are really good.

Horror walks a very fine line. Most of the best horror movies are one-offs: The Shining (not the TV version), Rosemary's Baby, The Omen, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (my friend had to watch it 3 times before she could get all the way through).

Then you have series films: Friday the 13th, The Exorcist, Psycho, Halloween, etc.. In all these cases, the first film is brilliant, and the subsequent ones rapidly go into the crapper (except for Halloween II and Friday the 13th part 2).

One of the things that made 70's and early 80's horror so good was the fact that it was usually so low budget. There were no slick effects, no computer generated crap, just prosthetics and pure, visceral terror!

Hollywood has run out of original ideas, as evidenced by all the remakes coming down the pike, like the god-awful remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre (so pointlessly stupid I walked out in the middle). So until a new batch of good horror writers and directors who UNDERSTAND what's scary (and don't just rely on gore and Scream ripoffs) come along, it's gonna be Sequel City.

It's sad that when a great classic horror film comes out (i.e A Nightmare on Elm Street) they go ahead and make sequels with seemingly no effort at all put into them. You'd think because the first one was such a hit they'd make an effort towards the next film.

Wow, that's a lota swearing for one message.

But ya, good horror movies are hard to come by, and I think it's because they are hard to make. That's probably why so many of the horror/slasher franchises have turned into parodies of themselves (ie. Friday the 13th); it's just easier to make that kind of movie. The Exorcist may be my all time favourite of the genre, although I haven't seen any of the sequels. Alien is probably the best "haunted house"-type movie I've seen as it really establishes the mood well. However, I've never been a fan of the zombie films or slasher movies. And, although opinion varies widely on this film, I really thought The Blair Witch Project was a great idea, and very well done. Film makers really don't need to go to all the trouble of extravagant effects; just give the audience a hint and we'll scare ourselves with our imaginations. Horror on radio had that effect; just think of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds and how effective that was back in 1938 (and still is today, if you get a chance to listen to it).

EDIT: Apparently there was some testing of an "auto-censor" yesterday and was likely the cause for all the '****' in Azeria_Jade's message. For more info see this thread in comms: The auto-censor.
