It depends on the geometry of the system. RvD used wires, but if the guy is flat on his back, you could probably use a skateboard and a trick camera angle.

Just don't show his feet and place him on a small mat that someone pulls from out of frame. Or use what Spiff suggested - it really does depend on the area you're in. But I don't think that any of the movement from a push in RvD was done digitally. :)

yea the skateboard was the first thing that came to mind, but i thought it was done digitally, makes sense though, now i gotta figure out bullet time.

RvD wasn't done digitally - except for the wire removal.

Bullet time is simply extreme slow motion photography combined with multiple camera angles. Fakery of bullet time won't look like bullet time. In theory, you could strap an extreme slow motion camera to a rocket, but it would still be traveling relatively quickly compared to a real bullet time rig using static cameras and timed shutters.

what about freezing the actors, while the camera moves around them slowly? then then speeds up dramatically?

Slide them the other way and play the footage backwards.

Or build a set of the area at an angle and let gravity use its job

There's also a whole LOT of threads on this. I bet the forum search could help you out plenty.

Funk is correct - in fact here's a slightly older one that contains several methods. Might be worth looking into. ;)

    What about this?

    http://cobraproductions.filmspace.biz/dayclip.mov --336KB/6sec

We just shot my feet and i held onto a ladder that two other people were holding me up by and they walked backwards and we modified the speed a little in post.

And heres the trailer if you'd rather view that first.

We shot at night with a generator so we could plug in lights. Luckily it was all free because of the University.

Sounds pretty cool and easy to do if planned right.
