exactly, for a system to become a member of the Republic, they would basically have to hand over a lot of the power. In a confederation, they keep a good portion of the power, often times leading to problems.

"No, all that means is that it's a weakly led republic. The fact that the central leadership is weak doesn't mean that legally speaking it is a confederation. "

    It actually does...

Without strong central government, member states generally have the majority of control or most of the power to determine their own fates. Either a strong central government or a weak central government. One or the other.

"exactly, for a system to become a member of the Republic, they would basically have to hand over a lot of the power. In a confederation, they keep a good portion of the power, often times leading to problems."

You must not have read HoT, where the Republic can't even keep its member states from declaring war on each other. BFC states that the central government was designed to be so weak that someone like Palpatine couldn't take over again.

The systems did not give up much, if any power.

I did in fact read HoT, and they were moving towards a confederacy, but weren't a full blown legal one. Like Havac said, a weakly led Republic...slowly declining towards Confederacy.

    Republics can be confederacies....

The Confederacy was, as was the United States at one point...

The New Republic always was a confederacy. It relied on the generosity of its member states to keep it afloat.

point. The boundaries of different forms of governments are very thin sometimes, and not always distinct. It all comes down to how you look at it really.

The Hapans and Imperials seem to be GFFA members in name only... it's sorta like the Holy Roman Empire not knowing how to deal with the Prussians or Bavarians in the 18th century.

The Hapans and Bakurans had similiar status in the NR - members that had a great deal of autonomy within the structure of the government while still officially retaining membership.

To quote Winston Churchill (in regards to the NR): "Democracy is the worst form of government - except for all the others."
