Ok, I have a problem with my computer and I cannot figure it out. I have my laptop which I am trying to load my Printer onto. I had to download the new Windows XP Driver from Hewlett Packard since my install CD is not working. When I did what the instructions told me to do, to load that drivers it says incomplete and says instal not complete. Then it shows a screen "Printer may not work properly until installation is complete." and the computer shuts down.

So do you have any ideas on what to do?
The printer is an HP Photosmart 1215. I have only had it for about a year.

My laptop is running Windows XP.

I usally just keep messing around and figure it out some how. Did you make sure to have the printer pluged in when you installed the driver?

I had a problem with my printer too and I run XP also. I had to remove all the printers from the computer and then reinstall everything from scratch following the directions that came with the printer exactly. It took me a couple of tries but now it runs as well as it did.

    Hi Binks,
If that doesn't take care of the problem, post again or drop me an e-mail. My husband works at a computer store and the two whiz kids that work for him can usually iron out anything that he can't. :)

Itried what Ccabas suggested and it did not work. I e-mailed HP and they responed with what to do. They told me since my modle of printer is old Technology it may not work with WinXP. So I did what the tech support told me to do three times and it still will not work.

Here is a copy of part of the e-mail sent to me.

    Test the printer functionality.

I suggest that you check the functionality of the printer by performing
a self-test. If the printer prints the test page then it indicates that
    your printer is working fine.

    1. Press the right arrow on the TOOLS button on the printer to select
    PRINT A TEST PAGE?

    2. Press the OK/YES button.

Note: This self-test printout confirms that the printer is
operating correctly. It does not, however, confirm that
communication has been established between the host
    computer and the printer.

After printing the test page, please ensure that the parallel interface
you are using is working properly.

To verify that the parallel interface cable is working properly, follow
    the steps given below:

    1. Turn your printer on, verify that is in ready status, and load
    plain 8.5 X 11 inch paper.

    2. Connect the printer directly to the parallel port (no Zip drives
or scanners connected between printer and PC).

    3. Turn your computer on and allow Windows XP to load.

    4. Click START.

    5. Click All Programs and then Accessories.

    6. Click on Command Prompt.

    7. Wait for a command prompt to appear (C:\WINDOWS>_ or A:\>_)

    8. Type this command: CD\ and then press the ENTER key.

    9. Then type DIR>LPT1.

NOTE: It may be necessary to press the OK button on the Printer
    Control panel to start printing.

    10. Observe the computer monitor for the command prompt (C:\>)
to reappear and the printer to print the list of files in the
    C:\ drive.

    * If your printer prints the list, the following components are in
    good working order:

    a. The parallel port on the computer

    b. The parallel communication cable

    c. The parallel port on the printer

The problem may be a bad installation of the printer software in
Windows. If this is the case, you will need to uninstall and reinstall
    the printer.

    * If you see this error message on the computer monitor:

Write fault error writing device LPT1
    Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail?

The problem may be caused by a failure of one of these components:

    a. The parallel port on the computer

    b. The parallel communication cable

    c. The parallel port on the printer

HP recommends using a high-quality IEEE-1284 compliant parallel printer
cable no longer than 10 feet for any HP Photosmart printer. IEEE-1284
compliant parallel printer cables meet industry-wide specifications to
ensure the highest level of performance and reliability. Some cables
labeled IEEE-1284 Compatible (rather than Compliant) may not be
    reliable.

If the parallel interface cable is working then I would recommend you
uninstall and then reinstall your printer by following the steps given
    below.

Uninstall the previous version of the drivers installed.

Before installing your HP Photosmart 1215 printer, please note that the
previously installed drivers have to be uninstalled. Please read the
instructions given below in order to uninstall the previously installed
printer drivers using the CD shipped with your printer. After following
the steps to uninstall, please reinstall your HP Photosmart 1215 printer

    following the steps below.

    1. Insert the printer software CD into the computer.

    2. Click Remove HP Photosmart 1215 software, and follow the onscreen
instructions to uninstall the printer software.

    3. Disconnect the Parallel cable from the computer.

    4. Click Start.

    5. Click Control Panel.

    6. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

    7. Click and highlight HP Photo Imaging Software.

    8. Click Add/Remove.

Dave, I'd have to check it out in person. Being an online techie with HP products is nearly impossible.

But then again, you ARE using Windows XP..

Well, I finally got my printer to work! I just traded my printer with my Sisters. She has a new HP printer that is XP compat. She is running Win2000 so she agreed to switch. I got the better printer but she says she does not need all the fancy features that is has. So things are good now. I can print once again. :)

Binks, the moment they told you it was incompatible with XP, you should have gave up. No matter how much you liked the printer.

XP, for what it's worth, is a very radical change from anything M$ has out. Starting with the way it stores files on your hdd to it's networking abilities and such, it's very different from 95/808/ME, NT and 2K.

The key with any peripheral you are trying to add to an O/S is getting the most current drivers from the manufacturer. DON'T use drivers from M$ or a third party - many of them won't work all the time. If the manufacturer says the object won't work with your machine, believe them. This also holds true with software. You can't fake out your system, unless you wrote the O/S youself.

Now - I'm not touting M$ in any way. They write some okay crap, but I still have issues with my machine at home. However, I believe mine are hardware related, and will have to deal until I replace it.
