Flash: My brother gold plated stuff when he worked at Sunscreen. That's how he put a lot of holes in his t-shirts. It's an involved process...

involved? what's involved. you buy the stuff in a jar, dunk whatever you want gold-plated and let it air-dry. my dad found this stuff in some catalog. it was really neat. we even gold plated a sock at one point. i'll ask and see if he remembers what the name of the stuff was. :D

I think the process you're talking about is called gold leaf. He gold plated mostly items that are mounted on cars. From what I remember, he would have to clean the item with a solvent and do something else i think, then polarize the piece (give it a charge) so that the gold would actually 'bond' to the item, not just be 'painted' on. I think it was the solvent that ate holes in his shirts. There is a process similar to this for chroming materials too, but there aren't many large plants that do it because of the chemical waste that is produced.

Yep, Toby I think you are right. Makes sense that the solvent would eat holes in his shirt. I do remember we used magnets on the metal knife et. al. Thanks. :D
