While I agree that AoTC had some cheese it was still a very good SW flick and way above TPM. Also, I don't let amateur rags like EW dictate to me what is good and what's not.

I've never been sure what is meant by "Cheesey". I used to think it meant something that was kinda bad but was forgiveable .

But that list in Empire mag has a lot of moments that are just sentimental or plain bad in a bad movie?

    What is "cheesey"?

I think AOTC was awesome (it's my second favorite of the series) but I personally think the Ani/Padmé romance was pretty rushed.

the article is NOT from EW. that's how rumors get started.

It's from EMPIRE MAGAZINE, a british magazine.

    http://www.empireonline.co.uk/

cheesy is somethig that is overly sentimental and emotional. just totally tacky. makes you want to say "what a $%&*ing sap!" it's the sort of thing that you see often at the end of disney movies. the sort of thing you can only appreciate if you're a teenage girly girl or five year old kid that doesn't know any better.

"Not a fan of EMPIRE magazine, they are one of the few Lucas supporters. Lucas has obviously bought them." -- yodaschum

(might have screwed up one or two words in the quote)

In other news, if it WAS Entertainment Weekly, I'd care even less. I have no respect for any magazine who puts celebrities' names in bold so you can conveniently find the Jennifer Lopez news.

    Rick McCallum loves you!

If they had gone with the fireplace scene, I could have seen.

But that one wasn't that bad.

Without revealing anything to the unspoiled,
the gushing, clumsy love scene at the fireplace that some call cheesy is important to the events of Episode III in that it shows
Anakin's love for Padme is extreme and over the top. It's there for a reason. Just as when she falls out of the ship, he completely freaks out. The level of his passion and intensity for Padme matters a great deal to future events.

    lol Rick_McGollum=Great name :D

I dunno what's with US critics. Anyone saying AotC isn't trashed by US critics doesn't know his feet from his hands [face_plain]

btw: Empire rocks. Got the mag here in Holland. At least they've got the ball to praise trashed movies and trash criticly acclamaimed ones. Just judging a movie by it's own merrits, not the general consensus

Casablanca & many classic movies are full of cheesy moments and they're considered (one of) the best movies of all time.

    Cheesy doesn't mean "bad". :)

On the contrary, Lucas always said that he wanted AOTC to have the 40-50's feeling. It looks like he succeeded in this. :)

GL should be proud that AOTC is on that list! :p

    No, no it's Entertainment Weakly.

Empire Magazine is one of the few AOTC supporters so it's ok if they say that scene is cheesy. Hearing Lucas speak though makes me think he wanted it to be a cheesy.

"Behold the power of cheese." :D

The sand line...whew, what exactly is the problem?

The guy is from a DESERT PLANET.
They're talking about where they're FROM.
If you've ever been in a desert environment,
you know that sand gets everywhere and it's a major irritant. Just like stupid critics.

At his mother's funeral, Anakin grasps sand and lets it run through his fingers.
    That's an acting choice.
    Wonder why he did it?

The whole saga is one big huge wheel of Brie, with one piece missing, to be filled in come May 2005.

I take it for granted SW is cheesy. I'm from Wisconsin, I know what I'm talkin' about!

I'd like a large pizza with double Star Wars, please.

    Great post, Ariel! :)

This is courtesy of Dinvader26 from another thread:

Lucas:"I wanted to write a love story in a style that was extremely old-
fashioned, and frankly I didn't know if I was going to pull it off.
In many ways this was much more like a movie that from the 1930s than
any of the others had been, with a slightly over-the-top, poetic
style-and they just don't do that in movies anymore. I was very happy
with the way it turned out in the script and in the performances, but
I knew people might not buy it. A lot of guys were going to see this
movie, and most guys think that kind of flowery, poetic talk is
stupid--'Come on, give me a break.' More sophisticated, cynical types
also don't buy that stuff. So I didn't know if people would laugh at
it and throw things at the screen or they would accept it. Let's face
it, their dialogue in that (couch) scene is pretty corny. It is
presented very honestly, it isn't tongue-in-cheek at all, and it's
really played to the hilt. But it is consistant with the over all
Star Wars style. Most people don't understand the style of SW. They
don't get that there is an underlying motif that is very much like a
1930s western or Saturday matinee serial. It's in that more romantic
period of making movies and adventure films. And this film is even
more of a melodrama then the others."--GEORGE LUCAS "Behind the
    scenes AOTC" book
