And again, I ask, why do you need to come in here and say this crap? We're trying to have a discussion about Apple issues and products for those of us who use them. It does no good for you and Ender to come in here with your comments. And honestly, flat out, I would never do that in an Android thread because I don't EFFING CARE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE USE. Honestly just go start a debate thread in the Senate, leave us the hell alone and carry on with your day.

Jesus cry more, Strilo. Nice to see you've not changed since MS days.

You'll note I'm not actually referring to Richie's posts, nor am I agreeing with them or endorsing them.

I pointed out two things I don't get about Apple; the pricing model, and the insistence on rendering basic peripherals incompatible with the wider computing market (to whit; my wife has a Macbook and she can't plug into one of my widescreen monitors because Apple don't do DVI or DSUB on laptops (it's a 2011 spec Macbook. My 2009 Dell work laptop has a DVI port though). The only purpose, therefore, is to make people buy more Apple products, at a premium.

So, it goes to that philosophy of Apple deciding what's best for the users, and I'm curious to know why users are ok with that? Don't you feel that is a little bit unfair, and almost rude?

Can you answer without patented Strilo-branded histrionics?

Good to see that douchebaggery is still alive and well on the boards. I have missed it.

remember how in that game battle of olympus for nes one of the items you could get was a golden apple? you had to fight a floating dragon head in a garden of fantasy to get it. then once you got it, your magic power was increased or something. i need to play that game again.

Wouldn't you want a garden of fantasy now? With Floating Robocops, and golden apples, and Vargs?

hell yes! with flying robocops from the ebony battalion (they have jet packs and heavy artillery). vargs doesn't have to be there, but if he is, that would be okay.

If he got out of line, one or more Robocops would sort him out.

i'm sure he would behave himself generally speaking, but him going on and on about national socialism would probably dampen the mood a little bit.

I don't see how a discussion of Apple's business model is off topic in the Apple Discussion thread. It's an issue unrelated to Android or any other OS.

However, toning down the invective would be nice. So do that. Also all this stuff about robocops and Vargs. PM each other about that if you want.

The difference between Apple pricing and any Windows manufacturer is that Apple is incurring software-development fees whereas Windows manufacturers aren't. They're paying licensing fees to Microsoft, and that's it. Apple builds it's own software and hardware; that is going to be more expensive than the model the Windows manufacturers employ no matter what Apple does. They're entirely right to charge a premium when they're taking on costs that an equivalent Windows manufacturer isn't.

As for your monitor not being compatible with a Mac and a PC...get an adapter. They're not expensive.

Right, but why do you need to?

What benefit does not having DVI or DSUB ports have?

I thought, "DVI? wtf?" So out of curiosity I looked up if Macs have HDMI ports. They don't. wtf

EDIT: Sorry, I'm not trying to troll this thread or anything. I've been reading it out of curiosity (I get curious a lot) and the iTunes/FLAC thing was a problem I ran into personally.

For one thing-it allows the entire laptop to have smaller dimensions. As you've noticed, a DVI port is huge. MiniDisplayport is not, and can do everything DVI can. Whether or not that's of substantial benefit is another question, but when you have a smaller port option that can handle everything the larger output can and also allows for a smaller chassis, why wouldn't you go with the smaller option?

My PC has a mini-HDMI port, and even normal-sized HDMI is tiny enough to fit onto an ultrabook.

But your mini HDMI port is mini-HDMI only, isn't it? minidisplayport can handle the following output options off the top of my head:

    -Displayport (obviously)
    -HDMI
    -VGA
    -DVI

So basically, it's four ports in one. Soo yeah, either you can have four ports for different display options (thereby driving up the cost and taking space from other things like USB/etc) or you can have a minidisplayport and output to pretty much anything.

Yeah, this. I have a DVI-DSUB converter for one monitor and my main is in HDMI. Yes, it meant I had to buy an HDMI cable (had the converter from years back) but they are a common enough format now that it wasn't a pain.

The point is either form over function, Boba, or that Apple would prefer you only use Apple cables. Now, thanks exclusively to the iPad and iPhone, Apple's no longer a fringe company but that refusal to integrate with the wider computing community is what kept Apple from taking off.

As smartphones get better and the iPhone is no longer the clear market leader (as it was when the iPhone 3 came out) would Apple seek to change?

And I did I hear correctly that the iPhone 5 uses a different docking/power cable than previous iPhone iterations?

Er, I can buy cheap DVI and VGA adapters (in fact, they came with my computer along with a mini-HDMI-to-HDMI adapter) for HDMI too. I just don't need to 'cause practically every modern display (and every one I'd bother with) has an HDMI port.

I was surprised that Apple TV came with HDMI to be honest. Though i suppose they can't control the TV market. Yet.

But if Apple made an iTV, which was a flatscreen TV for 3 times the price, would you buy it DarthBoba? :p

Yeah, it uses what's called a lightning connector. The only actual difference is the cable itself; you can still use legacy USB ports/etc to charge and transfer data. It also allows the iPhone 5 to have a third speaker built into the bottom of the device.

As for form over function vs. Apple only wanting you to use Apple cables..that's not really true. For one thing, Minidisplayport will work with literally any output and take up a minimum of space. That's not a superficial or pointless aspect. For another, the majority of adaptors aren't made by apple, nor is minidisplayport an Apple-only technology:

    Mini Display Port

Edit: No, I wouldn't buy an Apple TV. Do like their little set-top box, though.

Woo, congrats! You've managed to achieve parity with what Apple provides. Congrats and all, but that isn't really very relevant, nor even very true. HDMI is restricted to 1080p by default. Displayport and minidisplayport are not.
