JCC Apple/Mac discussion

Hmm. This is definitely a mystery, one that cannot be explained by porn alone. I never knew that there would ever be such an enigma.

 

It's actually quite a couple of computers (he bought two).

I think he's crazy not to wait the extra year or so until we have 45nm Intel chips on the market and DDR3-1600 is standard.

 

He must be rolling in it. I've customized the mac pros on the apple website and boosted the specs as far as they can go, and the price usually is in the 16,000 dollar range!

 

He doesn't believe in going into debt. He bought both his current house and car (a brand new Volvo) outright.

 

I am envious sir...editing on a Mac...I miss Final Cut.

 

Well, if you're doing HD video encoding you'll probably want the eight cores. If not, a dual-core processor will do you just fine.

Multiple cores allow for multiple things to be processed at the same time, meaning that things that can have multiple streams (separate programs, video encoding, some soon-to-be-released games {like Crysis}) can be processed at the same time without slowing either one down. Basically, the more cores, the more things you can process at once - but it doesn't make each program process faster (unless it's designed to take advantage of multiple cores, and the switch is taking place, slowly but surely). Smaller nanometer + faster clock speed = faster processing. More cores = more that you're able to process.

Woodcrest and Clovertown are Intel names for the processor style, referring to the process that is used to make it and the edition.

Woodcrest simply means that it's a Dual-Core Intel chip for servers built with a 65nm process. Clovertown is the codeword for the quad-cores.

I didn't know that the MacBooks offered those processors. I don't believe they do. I would think that they would be called Merom, which are Intel's Core 2 Duo processors for laptops.

Anyway, you will be paying a premium to Apple for the more cores you get. Eight-cores will be very useful for video editing, but I'm sure that two dual-core processors at 3.0 GHz will be very sufficient for the next few years at the least.

My computer is actually faster now, much faster, since the Leopard was designed for the Intel-based machines. Safari is running so fast, I feel like I'm on cable again (wi-fi user).

So, yes, Leopard is deservedly awesome.

 

Other than positive reviews that are appearing in the mainstream press, I don't really know enough to say. I'm sure it's good, but I won't be switching just yet. It's mainly a cost thing, as $129 for something that only improves on what I already have is a bit unnecessary for me at the moment. I may wait until 10.5.2 or 3 to upgrade (when I got my iBook in January of 2006, 10.4.4 had been released the week before).

IT IS! My mother is having an affair. She's supposed to be in Central CA managing the jewelry stores.

And we were gonna throw a birthday dinner for her tonight in downtown.... she is so busted. I got her a lovely little book of short stories and everything....

 

anybody know if the adobe cs2 my work installed on my machine will work if i upgrade to leopard?

i'd hate to lose it, and they aren't upgrading to cs3 yet

Gah, I had started to list reasons, but I'm no Apple salesman. Seriously, walk into an Apple store and just find the nearest, available employee and they'll have you converted before you can say "Windows sucks."
