As an avid gamer, my condolonces; Saga is a terrible system.

Regardless, now I find myself thinking about old-school 16-bit video game systems.

 

I confess I don't like it myself, but I'm always glad to see someone get into gaming...

Plus as someone that played 1st edition D&D for years I can't really complain about terrible systems...

 

LOL, I think I'm starting to get it as I can roll up characters without much difficulty now. Next thing I'm going to test playing by myself as I haven't SEEN an RPG played, and I'm going to be the GM as I have the book.

And don't you hate it when you pay money for something and then find out you can get it cheaper? A teaching supply store has RP dice starting from 30 cents each for a d4, and I spent ten lousy bucks on my set, nice though they are

 

While you'll get no argument from me, it IS much better than the Revised Core Rules.

Ooh, a complete neophyte group? I wish you guys luck. I suspect most of us had experienced players to learn from; I can't imagine what jumping into roleplaying cold must be like.

Here is a humorous but (sadly) fairly realistic depiction of a typical RPG game; specifically in this case, Dungeons and Dragons.

Meh. Real gamers don't buy dice because they're cheap, they buy them because they're awesome. ;-) (And please ignore the fact that the majority of my D6 collection is composed of casino freebies my family has collected over the years.) Ten bucks is a bit steep for even gamer dice, though . . . I'm guessing you grabbed something spiffy like Chessex's Borealis line?

 

They don't have a brand name on them, but they ARE a nice copper colour.

And I'm not a COMPLETE neophyte, one of my friends is a DM and he gives me help even though he's not that into SW and has his own system for D&D. He's played first edition D&D as well and his system does away with classes, alignment and a whole lot of other things.

BTW, I just finished testing my campaign on the first mission which is mostly fighting, after a while it got easier, remembering to do initiative checks and how do to attack rolls and stuff. I made notes as I went though, so I have an idea of where to go from there.

Plus, I drew my own map and used coloured counters as I lack minatures.

And FTR, has anyone read Darths and Droids? I have to confess that convinced me to buy the game.

Some advice for running a new game - if there's a situation where the rules are unclear or you can't find anything on a particular rule in a reasonable amount of time, just make a call - if you're wrong later you can apologize, but for the purposes of keeping the game going forward, decide. I've had a campaign ruined by degenerating into rules-searching in the middle of combat which would last longer than the combat (Shadowrun, a very rules-heavy game system).

 

I'm surprised they haven't made a role playing game for computers, where you can see and play the motions, not just conceptualise and and visualise the game with diceboard pieces.

What's wrong with me? I'm talking like a roleplayer geek!

Regarding OotS, I'm pretty excited about where the V stuff is going. I don't usually find him/her an interesting character but all this stuff with the dragon, his/her family and the soul selling has me mucho intrigued.

 

Pffft! My imagination is WAY better than some silly graphics. I was disappointed when I saw the X-wing comics for the first time. I had the characters looking far different and way more awesome!

 

So long as we get more of Redcloak and Xykon.

And the Sexy Shoeless God of War, of course.

Though normally I'm all about Elan. I Elan. Though, TBH, I love most of it. It's only Durkon and V who don't normally do it for me.

 

What's wrong with Durkon?

 

Having a Sith GlaDos dictate choose-your-own-adventures while you're crouched alone in a basement absorbing radiation isn't really 'roleplaying' Ex. Nor is the WoW world, which is nothing more than a temporal black hole consisting of an IM service awkwardly welded to a rather boring and repetitious hack-and-slash video game.
Real roleplaying at its best is real human social interaction with others engaged in a form of group storytelling.

 

While I'm not a regular reader, I've been enamored with Haley ever since someone linked me to this.

I shortly thereafter ran a variation of that scenario as a Star Wars adventure.

 

Same with me and the Dark Empire radio script. I thought that Sedriss was rather cool-looking, until I saw he just looked like your average thug. I still think the radio play is WAY better and funnier than the comic.

Lando: So there we were, me, Wedge and Luke on a star destroyer-
Han: The one you just crashed, Lando!

And thanks for the tips guys, I'll bet the first session will be interesting. The first campaign's going to have a level 10 Jedi that I play which I see as an in-game way of me saying "You can't do that!" as well as a way to get the players out of trouble and back on track.

 

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I just remembered that one of my best friends is participating in a SW RPG. I think she's a smuggler, and her sister is a droid of some kind.

 

Droid characters can be problematic, or so I heard.

 

From what I hear, she's having with it.

Not to switch gears, but any fans of a Chuck TV series here? It had become one of my favorite shows over the past season, so I am curious to see if others feel the same. I know that it is broadcast in the UK and Canada, so that covers most of our regular posters from outside the US.

Ex, have you managed to see Underbelly? I caught the first ep of the second season with Matthew Newton (Yes, Moonface's son) and thought it not bad, but no one else in my house likes it so I haven't seen anymore

 

I don't regularly watch anything on TV other than House.

Imagination, Horsey? Tell me about it... I once told Ostrander and Jan seeing their photos ruined every mental impression I had of them. Yeah, Antilles had two face types in the Rogue comics, but they were my first comics ever and have a special place for me.

Katana, I don't watch Underbelly, but it's popular at work. Not my kind of stuff. There's nothing currently on that interests me. Fat plums lose weight--nup. Wild femplums become ladyplums--nup. Talent, singing, dancing shows--nup. Home and Away: same people doing the same things after 15yrs, just different faces--nup. I liked Flashpoint. Liked it a lot. That's why they took it off after a few episodes. Stuff you Channel 9!

I've taken a recent liking to House. Kinda reminds me of myself -- intelligent and cynical. Still 4 more Dr Who episodes to come this year. And why when my Galactica 1 and 2 seasons come come in, I shall have something to watch each night.
