i really like the star wars tales comics series but i was wondering if any of them acctually take place and have effect in the star wars universe, obviously some can't, so are they all just infinities and just cool stories?

But certain individual stories are canon.

    ...Or rather they are "Continuity".

A version of yaddle's tale(according to official sourcebooks) is canonically part of the official continuity, but that doesn't include elements of the comic version, as the comic's actual frame story was rewritten and retold in another source setting it something like 200 years before TPM, in POTJ sourcebook. The flashback scenes on the other hand were refrenced as is.

A lot are canon, such as Extinction.

...Or rather the correct terminology would be "within continuity". LFL had said once and I paraphrase, everything else(except infinities) is considered canon.

    How about this:

    Infinities: technically yes.

    Canon: no.

Continuity: some...from a certain point of view.

    "Infinities: technically yes.

    Canon: no.

Continuity: some...from a certain point of view."

    Heh, good one.

Add "Official: yes" and most terms will be covered, heh.

I can't speak for other writers but I wrote "Falling Star" in SWT 15 as in-continuity. Hopefully you all will kindly consider it to be, too.
