I think Lucas approves the overall plot and use of certain characters but doesnt have really any say in any of the detail

so the book rogue planet showing anakin and obi-wan, when anakin was a 12 year old padawan, i could say that this happened in the star wars world? If lucus was going to make a film about the details between 1 and 2 would he likely use this line of story?

Lucas basically has a simple enough system. He gives basic outlines to authors and defines areas not to touch.

    i.e. you can't do X, X, X

Ergo no Clone Wars, Mandalorians, or Sith until he says its okay. Also no Anakin or Luke and Leia's mom.

Lucas throws in cameos all the time but his movies have never really needed to throw in a reference or two.

However, if he's going to do something. He'll do it. Lucas overwrought the Boba Fett origin that the EU created for example.

While he is unlikely to make a movie b/w 1&2 I think if on the slight chance he does make another movie somewhere he will use his own story. He does consider the Eu to be a sort of Parallel to the movies not a direct continuation. But so far, bar any future developments by Lucas, to the fans it can be considered direct continuation. Thats how I view it at least

I think C- G- and E-canon concepts are one of the funniest things around. :p

As a note, Lucas is aware of it and included...

    * The Outrider in the ANH Special Edition
    * Named one of the padawans for Mara Jade (though it is not her)
    * Included Aalya Secura in the battle scenes

Some authors think pure boredom makes for executive reading. [face_dancing]

Yeah of course. Also shortly after Rogue Planet Outbound Flight by Tim Zahn and after that is The Approaching Storm by Alan Dean Foster (I think thats his name) all between Ep I and II

Edit: Each to their own, umm I think I might choose "your", Your Excellence. At least I waited to get this one in paperback

Rogue Planet is 3yrs after Phantom Menance. 12 in that book, Anakin is 14 in Outbound. That makes Outbound five years after Phantom, midway between the movies.

Was Anakin a major feature in the book? He's now writing for young adult, what with three Dragonback books, Night Train to Rigel, Manta's Gift and Green and the Grey.

Oh, it had the classic exciting first chapter, hooking you in. Pure conversational boredom for the rest. Nothing exciting happens till the very end, if you can call it, ah, action.

EDIT for below: No, and don't intend to. I'm not convinced it's worth my while, that it or Labyrinth has enough substance the way Cloak was exemplar.

    It's not 100% necessary though.

    It helps.

I strongly recommend Rogue Planet if you plan to read the NJO, as well. Besides offering some useful background, it just provides a neat moment of connection. And whatever some may say about it, it's still better than Labyrinth of Evil or The Cestus Deception.

Up until 2 weeks ago, this was the case. Outbound Flight just came out.
