Or are they just taken down until the ban is up? I was confused when I opened a users profile and couldn't figure why I could not access it.

and after the move if the info doesn't transfer can it be possible to get around a ban if the IP address isn't available.

I think we're done here. Question has long since been answered.

    Exactly
We've manually stored the IP addresses of every banned user so... no.

We can still see the user's admin profile. It's just the public profile that is hidden if a user is banned. So we do have access to IP information, user notes, etc.

They're not erased, but just hidden from view.

what really bugs me about this is how we can no longer view the post history of said banned users so that we can try to figure out what it was that was so horrible that they did to get them banned in the first place. i hope you don't ban users for using run-on sentences. but, couldn't there be some little flipper or something that lets you just look at what they said or did. not necessarily that which was directly tied to their ban, but damn guys. some of my favorite users are banned forever and now i can never look at all of their witty remarks.

Its not something we can control for now, unfortunately. That may change with the move, however.

Yeah, this change came in when IGN updated the board code. It's not something we can control.

Yes you can. Use User Search to look up the username and then click on Posts.

On the new boards, you will be able to view the profiles of banned users. Until then, there's nothing we can do.

Oh, we have one, but only mods can view it. :p

We're under an owner mandate not to disclose any info about banned users, so making the ban list public is not really up for discussion.

So what is the purpose behind hiding the public profile of a banned user? Is there some benefit that the community gains by doing this?

    Seems to be rather pointless.

Really wouldn't have taken much research on my part to find that. Thanks Schwarz.

That's golden! I'm almost tempted to go over there and break the rules just so I can read the notes on me. But that requires effort and I'm not in the mood. :p

I guess it would take a while unless you automate it somehow... one would have thought a simple sql script replacing whatever denotes an ordinary user permission set with whatever denotes a mod permission set.

If there's some reason this can't be done, you could always choose a handful of users that are known and trusted - say, myself, Darth_Smelly and duende - to keep an eye on these things and assure other users that all is well.

Yes, the three of us can divvy up all the banned users' profiles and go through them one-by-one to ensure that they are all indeed still there, safe and sound, and then communicate our findings to the rest of the JC populace so that they may have peace of mind. Also perhaps make some changes while we're at it. Little ones, mind you.
